I wonder - could Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew, of course) always fly? I thought she could just walk on walls and stuff. I know fans are all in a tizzy over whether Bendis is taking liberties with all these old B- and C- level heroes and villains' powers he's using in New Avengers... I don't care so much about that, just curious to see what Jessica Drew can actually do. I think fans are also asking Bendis to do a recap of her origin at some point, since no one remembers that either.

Jessica Drew has always had limited Flight, originally defined as an ability to "glide."

along with that was the ability to walk on walls and shoot spider-venom bolts.

at one point she had a limited healing facotor that enable her to develop immunities to poisons she would be exposed to. She supposedly lost that power (but then again she was supposed to have lost the venom bolts as well).

Why on earth would you want to do away with venom bolts? And why, dammit, did they have to get rid of the Black Cat's luck power?

FinderWolf
17:28 / 10.01.05
when did they get rid of Black Cat's luck power?

Bendis also said he will make use of the little-known, little-used ability (which apparently she always really had, though) Jessica Drew has to emit pheromones that make guys hot for her, thus creating romantic tension on the team. Typical comic book staple idea.

well, the pheromone power isn't on the link that Mr. Tricks so graciously provided. But I could swear I've seen it listed somewhere else, maybe the Offical MU Handbook from years back.

That origin of hers (also on said link) is one of the most convoluted and craziest I've ever read. Check it out for a laugh.

Didn't the Black Cat lose her powers in the deepest darkest 80s? Please tell me she got them back.

Actually, it's kind of funny how often super-pheremones, of psychic charisma, or somesuch, get attached to a character then quickly retconned: Nightcrawler (IIRC), Spider Woman, Gambit, and few others I can't remember. I'm sure they sound great when a writer's coming up with an outline.

Wait a sec , hot looking woman releasing superpheronmes, possibly the natural counter to the purple mans power ????

So for carnage , nah if he has any sense it'll be cooked as it falls through the atmosphere breakes up and the remaing pieces are consumed then shat out , like the waste of space that retched plot tool was.

>> Wait a sec , hot looking woman releasing superpheronmes, possibly the natural counter to the purple mans power ????

Nice one; I actually hadn't thought of that, even given my bringing it up. That just might be how this plot with ol' Purply ends.

I think that actually did happen in an issue in teh 80's . Well its either that or sentry flys bakc in at mach X and blows him over the nearest wall !

I think Spiderwoman's a pretty shit addition to the team to be honest.

found this on a Marvel Universe page (probably from the old MU handbook) -- Purple Man knows DD is Matt Murdock! Of course, Marvel could just conveniently ignore this tiny obscure continuity detail...

>> His criminal empire in San Francisco apparently collapsed, and Killgrave turned up in New York City once more. There he used his power to coerce Maxwell Glenn, head of Glenn Industries, into committing various crimes on his behalf, as the first major step in the Purple Man's plan to create a financial empire for himself. Put on trial for these crimes, Glenn committed suicide. Daredevil had learned that Killgrave had forced Glenn to become a criminal, and the crimefighter had a confrontation with the Purple Man at Ryker's Island Prison. Killgrave realized that Daredevil was blind and correctly guessed that he was Matt Murdock. Their confrontation ended when Killgrave plunged into the sea and seemingly drowned.

or maybe he just 'correctly guessed' and Murdock didn't verify thats guess. who knows.

On a separate topic, I wonder how much YOUNG AVENGERS will suck? The artist seems decent, though.

i think she's a shit addition to a team that includes Spider-Man. you just don't have Spider-Man and Spider-Woman on the same team. you just don't.

i think Luke Cage is worse, however. it's like we're supposed to believe that he's a Major Character now because Bendis likes him.

everybody knows that DD is Matt Murdock. it's public knowledge now - his cover was blown. the fallot from this is the central story arc in Bendis' current run.

True, everyone knows he's PROBABLY Matt Murdock - but Matt's not in jail and disbarred because no one's been able to prove it.

And I agree with it being very odd to have two spider-prefix-people on the same team.

I think Luke Cage's status as the first African-American(/Black? Marvel?) superhero does make him fairly major.

isn't black panther earlier? true, cage does get points for not being called black-power man, though you know that's what they were thinking.

Spaniel

On the addition of Cage. Surely characters only become major through exposure.

Besides, Bendis has got a pretty good handle on the character.

Far better than Black Power Man, at any rate.

I got no problems with Luke Cage. I wish Wolverine wasn't going to show up though.

I thought The Black Panther was Wakondan(where ever that is) , there by being the first Black Super hero but not African/American .

Also Storm i think pre-dates Power Man , but again shes from Egpyt !

really? storm is xmen second generation c.1979 no? thought the wah-wah guitar exploits of black-power, man and iron fist were more a mid-seventies thing. could be wrong, not going to check.

All-New, All-Diff was '74-75, iirc.

That's why I said African-'Mer'cun. Wasn't sure if BP predated him.

Anyhow, Luke Cage, 1970's icon, has had like - loads - of exposure in the above mentioned team-up title and his own Power Man book.

Maybe that was his first? First black solo superhero title?

Think maybe it was.

15:12 / 12.01.05
I think you're right, I think Luke Cage's solo title predates the solo Black Panther title.

I'm surprised Luke Cage, or the Heroes for Hire concept, doesn't have his/it's own title. It seems like an absurdly rich field to mine. Cage is great, and there's tons of mileage in the idea of small scale urban 'heroes' who work for cash. But please lord not Bendis, the man's stretched thinner than Michael Moore's underpants.

Incidently, I noticed an 'Essential Luke Cage' listed. Is any of this stuff good? Worth buying, or pure chod?

There was a brief Heroes For Hire comic about 8 years ago, played mostly for comedy, with Cage and She-Hulk in the group. Can't remember who wrote it... Steven Segal, Lobdell, someone...?

Ostrander, I seem to remember.

Was closer to 6 years ago, too.

I like Cage a lot. I like him best as part of the duo Power Man & Iron Fist, with a yellow jacket.

New issue out tomorrow. Apparently, from the preview pages at popcultureshock, the Purple Man dilemna is solved quickly (and far too easily for my tastes).

Yep, Purply went down far too easily. Some decent stuff in here, though...

Spider-Woman has a deep, dark secret. Cool.

And the seeds are planted for the Mystery Avenger...

Mystery Avenger isn't much of a mystery, after #3. Bendis all but applies the foreshadowing with a sledgehammer.

Um, I know Wolverine was in the promo art, but I missed the clues.

Anyway, of course Purpley went down too easy, c'est le gag! And about fucking time. Something about that "Purple Man" rubs me the wrong way.

Anyway, Bendis anachronisms aside ("They didn't --" "They didn't have Sesame." UGH!) I'm very much liking this book, conceptually. I like the apartment, I like the vibe off Tony especially (Cap is a little too much right now. We CAN read the Ultimates, Brian.), and, as always, Bendis proves no one has ever gotten a better handle on Matt Murdock's brain.

I enjoyed the somewhat compressed resolution of last issue's cliff-hanger. Not at all familuar with the Purpleman/Powerman history but this is getting me to consider tracking doen't those ALIAS tpbs.

That was a very THOR looking SENTRY floating in front of that helecarrier; its about time it got their and I initially assumed that would use THAT for a base. This apartment living's got some definate MTV potental.

Would've liked to have seen a bit more on Sentry thought. I wonder if next issue will be the collection of the New Dangerous Avengers. Will Wolverine be invited as a countermeasure to Sentry?

Surprised Luke Cage didn't ask about the Pay. He has made a career out of being a hero for hire.

Luke's a family man. And I'm sorry but any time a black person is put in a major event book and written intelligently, I'm happy.

Oh and blackcats goodluck powers rates up there with Longshots --- completely retarded shit!

Spaniel
10:21 / 07.02.05
Yeah, 'cause luck powers are retarded.

I like it when people shoot lazers out of their heads best!!111!!!
