I am leaving some out (interested parties please scroll up just a bit) but it seems that you're saying that, though you personally were not offended, there were comments to which one might reasonably take offence.
Now, I didn't, as perhaps I should have, go back over the thread and see where, if anywhere, you stood in regards to Gambit's little 'joke.' If I had maybe it wouldn't have sounded to me as if you were pointing and saying 'See, see, they're doing it too!' To me it seemed a qualitative difference in the bisexual jokes and the faux-mysoginist kidding (giving benefit of the doubt). Then again I'm not bisexual or female, nor particularly easily offended myself. (Is being quick to feel insulted different? I think so...) I do think one should be very familiar with someone and have a mutual understanding before kidding in an offensive manner, but barbelith seems clearly open to non-hetero sexualities. I could see someone being peeved by a fence sitting jab, especially if they heard them all the time, but offended? |
