Did Haus and Jade used to go out or something? Because this level of animosity is something I don't see very often except post ugly breakup.

If so, then I think I must've inadvertently shagged him too. It's easily done.

see, i assumed rage had posted those pictures to get a response exclaiming how attractive she was, and that mr. gammy was just giving her the opposite.

You think trying to beat me down with 'hysterical suffragist' comments is going to shut me up?

i didnt get the impression he did.
did anyone?
i mean, honestly.
did you really think he was doing anything else other than baiting you, anna?
you called him a mysoginist and he responded with a fairly predictable variation on the sarcastic agreement.

congratulations on defending the world from piss-takers.

oh, and one more vote for the 'this thread fucking rules' ticket.

bush loses ibis:
Etymology: New Latin, from English hysteric, adjective, from Latin hystericus, from Greek hysterikos, from hystera womb; from the Greek notion that hysteria was peculiar to women and caused by disturbances of the uterus.

Has everyone else made the leap between hysteria and PMS? Because even though I am a rational human being and a very nice one most of the time, there is an unmistakable period of about 24 hours every month where I am very, very prone to almost-humiliating sessions of unfocussed rage. Or, even more likely: cramps. Without medication, they can be debilitating, leading to screeching, crying, fainting, vomiting, spending a day or two rocking back and forth and moaning in the foetal position. Just think, girls: no ibuprofen, no anaprox, chamomile if you're lucky.

So, this isn't to say that the phrase "hysterical suffragist" doesn't make me twitch in a bad way, or that women are unable to live in the realm of the rational, but that there perhaps is a rather direct reason for this term.

Well, rather than the uterus being linked merely to menstrual bleeding, it was commonly believed that it travelled around the body, like some sort of malign slug, causing symptoms in several systems, for which no organic cause could be found (such symptoms being, classically, more common in females). Physicians used to prescribe an incredibly tight girdle, rationale being that constricting the waist would prevent the womb from wandering into the top part of the body.

vidvis13 If I were to say 'Ah, you're all a bunch of fatties' would I be insulting the females more than the males?

If you were to pick a situation, as in this thread, where you were addressing women then, duh, yes.

Do I need to remind you of what Gambit actually said, or can you check page one on your way out of the thread?

I'm not sure that trying to make somebody "angry" by using terms of misogynistic abuse is necessarily better than trying to make somebody be quiet by using terms of misogynistic abuse, toksik. It's like calling somebody a bad word based on the colour of their skin in the hope that it makes them take a swing at you, as opposed to doing it in the hope that they will be frightened and intimidated by you.

It's possible that you mean "a person calling Anna a 'hysterical suffragist' is a kind of friendly joshing, in a sort of 'look! See how I am spoofing the sort of sexist language others might use without my mature and ironic approach!' way". That's fair enough, but since the ability of Gaimbit to understand the impact of his terms qua gender is under critique by Anna, that's a bit complicated. You end up getting a bit meta - "well, nobody would be upset by my ironic use of a term like hysterical suffragist... unless they were some kind of hysterical suffragist!"

nah, haus, not quite.
what i was talking about was gammy-jaws using overtly mysogynistic language after having been accused of the crime of mysogyny.

the first transgression, the 'you are siding with your boyf' bit was not, to me, a sexist comment. boyfs and girlfs stick together, gender/sex/sexuality notwithstanding.

the later comments seemed to me to be clearly designed to be overtly mysogynistic in response to the accusations of mysogyny.

have you seen presumed innocent?
do you remember the 'confession' harrison ford makes when accused of murder?

That's because you're a monumentally stupid halfwit, toksik. I'm just baiting you when I say that, though, so you can't get angry or else I win. Ah! Ah!

The idea that one of the many feminist women on Barbelith might not be angry with the initial "lose weight, Rage" comments for any other reason than that her alleged partner was also unhappy with them is not only sexist, it displays a real lack of observance of the board for the last however many years...

Thanks, Haus, for the non-accusive analysis/answer to my question. I had skipped a page of the thread before posting and, upon review, was certain I was going to be lumped in with the terori.. I mean mysoginists. Well, I'm sure to some I am anyway. Oh, well...

In regards to this:

I don't really care, other than in the general-love-humanity way, what Gambit said. He sounds like someone being a bit of an ass to me, but I'll leave that for you professionals to decide. Those questions occured to me so I asked them; this particular context interests me not at all.

Yes, but it's not about her, which is the funny part. By about the third post, the seeds had already been planted for Jade to have an unexpected Passion-of-the-Christ-style meltdown, and before the end of the page, IIRC, Gaimbit had likewise managed to lay the foundations of his own baking. And so on, until any discussion of Rage just felt like threadrot.

Bless 'er.

One more time, and I'll type slowly:

I'm
not
defending
him.
I asked a question because I was understanding (mistakenly?) that this was a forum for learning and communicating. If I'm mistaken so be it.

And to avoid future misunderstanding, the way to discern what I mean by what I write in here is to READ THE WORDS THAT I WROTE. Those words represent what I'm trying to communicate, that's why I chose them. Any assumptions you make about subtext are your own buisness. If I mean to say something beyond the actual words, maybe I'll give a little signal or something, if that's going to be neccesary.

You read it right the second time, I didn't mean to sound like I was telling you to fuck off. Sorry about that.

Thanks.

And btw, I'm not saying that I don't care about mysogony (you'll know this now from the fact that I DIDN'T SAY THAT,) I'm saying that the drama of Anna and Gambit is only periphally related to the questions I asked. The reason I didn't ask questions about anything he said was because nothing he said interested me. We've all heard goofy gender-baiting comments before and I don't feel the need to learn anything from the people that make them. Anna, on the other hand, seems an intelligent, if short triggered, person who's comments, though coming from a fundamental place of agreement (imo), she takes further then I find justifiable. Sounds like an oppurtunity for learning, or at least discourse.

If I don't agree with you, it's not neccesary to assume I'm an enemy.

Please ignore this post if I was mistaken and this isn't a forum for discourse, but an oppurtunity for people to think of witty ways to insult each other.

I never saw the Passion. Having seen many other movies based on the gospels, I figured "what further revelation could Mel Gibson offer me on the life/death of Jesus of Nazareth?" Well, according to my friend who saw it, the revelation is this: Christ can take a punch. "I'd have that fool backing me up in a fight any time," he told me. Which is both fun and sad, just like this thread.

Friends! Cease this senseless bickering! Let us turn this thread into a place to spread the glorious word of Jesus the Scrappy!

it was never my intention to make either you or anna angry, whatver you think. if i did piss either of you off then i'm sorry.

might not be angry [...] for any other reason than that her alleged partner was also unhappy with them

i am aware ms.dL can form her own opinion and often does.
i just wanted to suggest that mr.G may have been saying that her discovery of the thread was via you, potentially in a sentence something along the lines of "have you seen what gaimbit said?". she could quite easily have been equally outraged discovering it alone, i'm sure.

I think I covered this above.

i read the above. i didnt think so, hence the additional text from me.
i was making the point that being accused of shit can make people who feel innocent feel like 'proving' you right til it becomes obvious you are not.
(obviously that ploy fell on its arse, what with the comments being taken as more evidence.)

is there a reason for your lack of engagement with that particular point? apart from the possibility that you thought ignoring it might annoy me?
(it does, if that helps.
only a wee bit, mind.
but yeah, it does.)
was it because you dont like harrison ford movies?

it reads the same every time i read it.

you were talking about sexism as a friendly josh, i was talking about the pretense of something bad as a response to accusations of perpetrating that same something.

its the 'as a response to' bit of 'SillySexism as a response to accusations of ActualSexism' that i was focusing on here, not the sexism itself.

hence the reference to one of ally mcbeal's dad' movies.

This may be because I never saw presumed innocent, but I'm talking about the hyperbolic use of, in this case, sexist language to deflect accusations of sexism. So, no, I'm not talking aboiut sexism as a friendly josh, I'm talking about usng sexist terminology as a means of self-identifying as non-sexist. As far as I can make out, that's a slightly more sophisticated version of what you're talking about, but perhaps you cou;d provide a less Fordy example to clarify...

Perhaps we should go back to using those Sarcasm Deliniators, but it's a bit like saying "Yes, I am being sarcastic" in a sarcastic voice- it doesn't really work. It should be "No, I'm not being sarcastic", then it would make sense.
