A beautiful tunnel of ghosts

If you're referring to E for Extinction, I believe what Cassie injects herself with is the cocktail of viruses that destroy her own body after she swaps minds with Xavier.

20:51 / 15.03.04
I believe she injected herself with nanosentinels, which were then sprayed onto the X-Men when she shot her own body and sprayed blood everywhere.

I get what you're saying, but wasn't Magneto a megalomaniacal terrorist long before the Kick? I think the Kick just exacerbated his condition.

EVA says she is a generation N unit from the World. Pretty clear that she counts as Weapon 14, bonded to Fantomex.

A LOT of old-style Magneto worshippers are saying that Morrison used Sublime/Kick to make Magneto into a drug-crazed buffoon. They're insisting that Sublime was in control of Magneto's actions and that he didn't have anything to do with the madness that ensued. Of course, they're Morrison haters, and should be treated justly...

I think Magneto was doped up- but fully responsible for his actions. What say you?

And ...Anbd did you s-say The Cuckoos aren't AREN'T ...Four -Fourt-Fourteen? AaacK! Aaarrrgh! My heart!... Dying... Aaaaaa..aa.aa...a (kerplunk)

-end scene-

I'm mostly pissed off that we may not learn the last name Cuckoo's name. Which I want to think begins with an "I".

Cassandra definitely injects herself with nanosentinels. She does it just after making sure the sentinels recognise her new DNA as Trask, so they won't attack her. Just something we haven't addressed, why is she able to assimilate Trask DNA so easily? Because she is largely the same, Trask being another Sublime host, I'd guess.

Aertho
21:34 / 15.03.04
Oh please. Cassandra's many powers included DNA replication. She was uberpowerful and designed to steal and replicate genetic gifts/traits/powers... whoops. I said "designed".

■
21:37 / 15.03.04
Yeah, I know. I just thought it was odd that no-one had made any kind of a Trask/Sublime link. Probably not worth the effort, really.

21:39 / 15.03.04
Here's the problem...while "Generation N" _may_ mean she's a 14th generation product of the World, we also know that (at the very least) everyone up to Weapon X were NOT products of the world.

I read that line as her describing herself as an "Nth generation" Sentinel, as the phrase "nth generation" is often used to describe something so advanced as to be an entirely new technology.

And I STILL don't know why some of you suggested the 5th Cuckoo be named Daphne.

■
21:43 / 15.03.04
Yes, you do. It's that episode where Scooby dressed as Xorn bumps into her and she loses her glasses.

5 girls in a single group who are devoid of distinction. 5 little girls who are everything nice, sugar and ?

Sophie, Phoebe... ? ...Celeste, Esme.

Would that make Emse the Scary Spice?

Mario
21:48 / 15.03.04
That would be Velma.

■
21:51 / 15.03.04
Dammit! That explains why she always looks unhappy when I call out her name at the big moment!
No, it's really to do with a pair of serious no-marks who had a hit record a few years back called Daphne and Celeste.
and guess what song is gonna go through my head for the rest of the week...

Mario
22:17 / 15.03.04
If I were going to invent a name for the fifth Cuckoo, I'd pick Alice...

Because SPACE, SCAPE, and CAPES are very Grant-oriented words.

But Irene is also a possibility.

"I don't think we should cheapen Magneto's character arc by suggesting that he wasn't making those decisions. He was just being led along, that's all. He's responsible for all the things he did, the good and the bad"

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. haha hah hahahahahahah! God it feels good to be on the inside track for once.

New X-Men #154

The end of Grant Morrison’s run, and – true to expectations – the reset button is pressed, although it’s done retrospectively by Jean from the future, by giving her blessing to Scott and Emma getting it on. Of course, if Chuck Austen now fucks the storyline by piling doubts on the relationship, it’ll make this all meaningless. A great jumping-off point.

I was just about to post that very same thing. Generation N had to mean something. Occams Razor says she's Weapon 14.

i always took "N" as a variable, perhaps better written as Generation (n) or something. i think it's definitely not 14.

Rawk'n'Roll
11:00 / 16.03.04
I had someone else use that nth generation argument with me on another forum. I didn't for one second believe it and I still don't. My immediate reaction to that line was to swap the letter for a number, I can't imagine Grant or EVA for that matter being obtuse enough to use nth... it just doesn't fit for me. But I've certainly heard a lot of people using the argument since.

I think we can agree that one thing Grant isn't sloppy about is dialogue, obtuse and cryptic, but not sloppy. If he'd meant nth generation, he would have said it.

I'm one of the n=variable crowd. But ya'll know that already.

N=variable=shapeshifter?

Quimper
13:13 / 16.03.04
I'll give you all n=nanotech, but if we don't find out who Weapon 14 is tomorrow, I'm going with N=14. Aren't we being a little too needlessly complicated?...;-).

i don't think that's sloppy. i think that's obvious. besides, i think he did say it: i'm pretty sure that "N" is superscripted at least once, as in "Generation to the N power" type deal.

I'm one of the n=variable crowd. But ya'll know that already.

that makes me feel better, because you're right more often than not.

I'm going with N=14. Aren't we being a little too needlessly complicated?...;-).

i think N=14 is needlessly overcomplicated, personally.

-------------

this just hit me now. i'm sure it's already obvious to many of you, so i feel a little dumb saying it but:

"everyone's scared of their replacements" works on two levels with the Rover - Tom Skylark - EVA love triangle, because EVA is not only a potential replacement for Rover in Tom's heart, but also as a more advanced Sentinel.

i feel like a dumbass for not thinking of that until now.

it really has been recurring for a while. in Assault Fantomex was motivated largely by fear of XV. Beak was (briefly) afraid of his own kids in Murder at the Mansion. Jean coming to terms with Emma and Scott at the end of that same arc, and again (apparently) in 154 speaks to her overcoming that same fear.

anyway.

Chesed,

I managed to get my hands on the ASSAULT trade, and I can't find the reference to Weapon 14 either. So I withdraw the comment

When ya'll were originally going nuts over N=14, I went and did my research on all appearances of E.V.A. and Fantomex. I still think I'm right -that she's a part of 13, but I've been wrong before... I was sure Mystique was gonna be one of the Twelve.

Hey! Does anybody know who/where they're doing an annotated NXM, like Anarchy for the Masses?

I'd love to shoot some of my theories and shiznit that way

Rawk'n'Roll
07:38 / 17.03.04
I like the n = nanotech idea. Thats quite a likely candidate too but this is Grant we're talking about... he probably meant all of these ideas all in one go. He's slippery like that.

Annotated New X-men.... um... isn't that what Barbelith is for? We could just transcribe and edit all the crap we've been talking for three years and come up with a pretty good volume of notes.

No-onme would get ANY of it however (I was shocked at the reaction I got to special class/original X-men simile on another forum).

I've actually been collecting several annotations, to the extent of almost 30 raw unedited pages. I was expecting the run to end to continue with the more objective related story elements, to avoid as much speculation as possible.

I've been researching and developing material related to the Kabala, the Chakras, JD Bernal's "The World, The Flesh and The Devil", Tipler's Omega Point Theory (the one I posted here, though I'll have to drop the Xorn theories), the VMeme theory (thanks, Chesed ), Howard Bloom's "The Lucifer Principle" and "Global Brain", Richard Dawkins' "The Selfish Gene", Susan Blackmore's "The Meme Machine" and certainly others I'll end up stumbling upon.

I'll most certainly be 'stealing' several theories we've discussed here, but I'll try my best to acknowledge every contributor.

Care to colaborate? We'll have a few plot holes and slight inconsistencies to fill, after all.

from comixtreme.com:

Review: Here’s another issue almost impossible to discuss without spoiling. So watch me digress.

This is very much an end of an era, not just for Morrison and the New X-Men title, but for me, as this is probably the last “core” X team book I will ever buy. Oh sure, I’ll probably still pick up my “usual suspects” (Wolverine, Ultimate X-Men, X-Statix), but that’s enough X for me. I reserved the first issue of Astonishing because I like Cassaday, but I’m not getting two to see them in their Underoo clad past glory - I think I’m done here. It’s kind of sad, but these last few months, the best non-satire super team book I’ve read is Birds of Prey.

This issue highlights the best thing - to me - about Morrison’s run: the science fiction. He manages to tie this arc in with his first one, and with the one that introduced Fantomex, staying true to its own internal logic. Well done. But at the very end the book highlights what I didn’t like about Morrison’s run: the soap opera. It’s never been as bad as the bilge in Uncanny (what could be, this side of a V.C. Andrews novel?) but I never liked one specific plot, because it made no sense. The writer obviously liked these characters, so he slapped them together, reason be damned. The last two pages are supposed to be a “happy ending”, but struck me as just the opposite. A shame, as I enjoyed the book until then. So maybe I’ll just skip the last two pages. (I should add I’m sure I’ll be in the minority about the last two pages; I’m accustomed to that.)

The art by Silvestri is very good, but occasionally uneven. For instance, I almost didn’t recognize Logan in a close up (but who else could it be?), and sometimes background details get a little confused. But, those minor quibbles aside, the action scenes are terrific, as is the Phoenix transformation and all that ensues. A nice coloring job by the whole crew (please check the above credits - there’s many) remains intense throughout.

I guess it’s an ending for all of us, Grant. It’s been real; keep in touch. But, adios. X-Men - I’ll only see you in advances.

>> "everyone's scared of their replacements" works on two levels with the Rover - Tom Skylark - EVA love triangle, because EVA is not only a potential replacement for Rover in Tom's heart, but also as a more advanced Sentinel.

Excellent point.

So today, the speculation all ends (well, most of it anyway) and this issue actually comes out, right?

It's god damned gorgeous, folks.

Hank probably gets the best line of the series.

Everything makes an assload of sense now. Erik, "under orders he couldn't understand" was completely controlled by Sublime/Kick. That was really Grant's masterstroke. By making Kick an entity, the entire run now fits together like clockwork. Everything, the Riots, Planet X, was all part of Sublime's plan. I'm even guessing that Emma was shot, at least in terms of story structure, so it could be guaranteed that she was no longer under the control of Sublime (if she ever was, but anyway, being blown apart is certainly the best way to avoid contamination).

Also, thankfully, there's only one inker this time around, so it's the best looking issue of HCT and if not his best, definitely my favorite issue of Silvestri's.

It's pretty fascinating, to me at least, to be treated to two monumental finishes in comics storytelling in one month; one of them hopelessly dismal but immaculately constructed, the other one so cosmically life affirming you want to just jump up and down.

Kudos, Messrs Morrison, et al.
