The Weapon XII arc was one, yep, but it wasn't the only one. The two that really got on my nips were Bishop and Sage suddenly appearing in Murder at the Mansion and the Genosha issue, with Polaris, Quicksilver and others. Why do we need to see any of them? They don't seem to serve any purpose other than being a sop to the people who were longing for the days of crossovers and multicoloured spandex. Like Asteroid M, there's no explanation as to who they are - Morrison's relying on the reader having a knowledge of previous storylines.

I don't have a problem with him giving subtle nods to long-time fans - the panel with the ruby in #154 when we're in the white hot room makes absolutely no sense to me as someone who doesn't know the ins and outs of X history, but it doesn't need to because it's so small. And yeah, I know you don't need to know everything about, say, Polaris to get those bits that include her, but her inclusion feels unnecessary, lumpy and ugly and, well, like a throwback to the days of overly confused decades-long continuity. They don't fit at all with the idea of Morrison's run being a jumping-on point for new readers brought in by the films.

It also doesn't help that those issues are largely bereft of life - there's no spark to them, they drag.

Can everybody drop all this "Aha! See, I was right all along and you were wrong, fucko" and "No, you're completely wrong about that because I say so" bullshit, regardless of who it's aimed it or who's saying it? It's exactly why I haven't bothered joining in these threads properly since the silent issue dropped - sucks every last ounce of enjoyment out of them.

Abso-fuckin-lutely.

Makes me want that poster, whomsoever they be, to be wrong. There's little excuse for being so snippy.

Except if you don't think Ernst is Cassandra. 'Cos that's bloody obvious.

Well hopefully Chuck A. won't mess up the Cassandra/Ernst thing too bad...

I wonder how or if Claremont will address Morrison's Phoenix continuity now that it seems Rachel will be manifesting it. Not only is Rachel herself represented by the phoenix raptor itself on the cover to #45 carrying Kitty but she manifests the phoenix in the issue as well. Even though Morrison's version was partly derived from some of Claremont's old stuff- he hasn't seemed to be too pleased with it.

Oh well if Rachel has Marvel Girl and the Phoenix like Ulimate Jean- what does that leave Jean for if or when she comes back? Or does it mean Jean isn't coming back since they have a replacement for her already.

I was hoping that #154 was just the beginning of Jean's story.

Waitaminute

Tom = Scott
Rover = Jean
EVA = Emma

Sure, it's not absolutely analogous because relationships are never exactly the same, but it replicates the twosome of Scott/Jean and the whole point of Here Comes Tomorrow. Rover "dies" in 153 and that completely destroys Tom's hope. Only when Tom screams his need does Rover return to save him and EVA both. Error(HCT future) not ERROR... Error not error.

Gosh. That's clever. It works, too. Fractal reality anyone?
So, Grant shows it happening down the spiral. Is Cassie speaking out of the frame supposed to be him working up to the next level (ie. us?). May clarify this when less tired.

The 'Here Comes Tomorrow' trade came out yesterday, and there's a section in the back w/ rudimentary Silvestri sketches and bits form Morrison's script for issue 154:

<‘New X-Men’ issue 154/pg 19

Frame 1: It’s all so strange here because we’re INSIDE the M’KRANN CRYSTAL from way back in the olden, golden days of the X-Men. The M’Krann crystal interior from the old stories is merely the jumping off point for this post-Matrix world of appearing and dissolving forms in endless white space. Perspectives can be recreated around the figures easily in this world of shifting structures. Phoenix stands alone in the center of the scene. This is like the Matrix grown up and having babies w/ Jack Kirby…Jean is wearing her classic Phoenix outfit w/ the sash but it’s now white and gold, not green and red.>

Yeah, I saw there were some behind the scenes 'extras' in the trade for this and I wanna check 'em out. The other Grant M. NXM paperbacks don't have extras, right?

Just how long are the script bits? I'm not sure I want to shell out the money for the trade (instead of waiting for the third hardcover).

There excerpts from 6 or so pages. Some Beast/Appolyon stuff (it appears at one point Appolyon was referred to as '6'), some Wolverine/Beak, some additional whitehotroom. Nothing too spectacular.

I suppose it'd be unethical to ask for a transcript.

6, huh? I wonder how that affects the Apollyon=Fantomex theories...

Just got the trade. Finally finished New X-Men.

Fuck me, that was good, wasn't it?!

I just wish that the whole run had been a bit more like HCT, it was by far my favourite arc.

I don't really have anything to say that hasn't already been said. I'm glad they added in the script excerpts at the end, though, because the entire bit at the end was confusing-moreso because of the art than the story. I didn't realise Jean was inside the M'Kraan crystal (even though they actually showed it) and I didn't notice the insect-like fingers taking the sublime-enitity and disposing of it.

(As I was reading the last pages, I was thinking about trying to find Grant's script on-line to try and make some sense of it all. Marvel saved me the bother. Good for them.)

I looked at the bonus stuff in the trade today, and I got the sense that it was included primarily to spell out a few things that were not clear from the art and the dialogue. I'm glad that it's there, but it seems to highlight some weakness in the actual comic.

That sounds familiar doesn't it? (coff Invisibles 3.2 coff) Perhaps in future whenever Morrison has finished some work he could put the scripts up at GM.com for a few weeks so we can work out what ideas he hasn't managed to get across to his artists this time...

It should be of some interest to you all that in Uncanny X-Men #445, Rachel sings the lyrics of Cream's "White Room" ("in the white room with black curtains near the station...") and explains that it was her mother's favorite song. This is great, because it indicates that Chris Claremont is running with Grant's ideas about the Phoenix and integrating them into past continuity. It seems that there is no intention of retconning any of the Phoenix stuff in NXM, which is great news.

Whoah, looks like I'm going to have to find the HCT trade paperback.

Did the script exerts explain anymore about what the White Hot Room is or the other "Phoenixes" or even the Voice//? How about Jean being the White Phoenix of the Crown?

Mario
11:01 / 09.06.04
Not really. About the only thing it has is a description of the Phoenixes as "The Green Lantern Corps crossed with the angels of heaven".

There's actually very little discussion about them. No comments about uniform colors (except for Jean's) or any particular members, outside of Quentin.

Matthew, how has Claremont's Uncanny been? Now I don't even bother to look at his stuff, but that bit about Rachel singing 'White Room' sounds like a bit of inspired writing on his part.

Is it worth checking out, or don't bother?

The two Claremont/Davis issues of Uncanny have been pretty good, actually. So good that I suspect that Claremont isn't actually writing most of it - the dialogue is missing a lot of his quirks, the plotting is dense (very non-decompressed, a lot of story packed into an issue, a la Jim Shooter-era Marvel), it just seems more alive. I think that Alan Davis is the driving force behind this - he's at least coplotting this, or he's bringing out the very best in Claremont.

It's easily the best stuff Claremont's done since the late 80s - so far, it's not at all like his X-Treme dreck. It just feels good and right and it makes perfect sense after Morrison's run. The art is great too, obviously. It's just a very good superhero comic.

nice little realisation yesterday - Logan finally gets a shot at the guy who turned him into Weapon X. Kind of gives "stitch that bub!" a little more weight to it,

It's interesting to see GM fans saying that the White Room quote by Rachel is a nice positive nod to Grant's ideas whereas CC fans think it's a sly dig.

Well that's nasty in-grown nerdiness for you. I prefer happy nerdiness.

And anyway, it's only a dig if it could in some way be seen to take the piss. If it is a pisstake, it's not a very obvious or funny one.
