If I was feeling uncharitable and bitchy, I could ask you what use you are to the people you report on

Answering your unmade question, I'm of no use for them. They usually don't even see me there. Which doesn't help at all as well

Ok. I haven't read that thread.

So, I am reacting purely off the comments you've made here. Which make no reference to that thread.

So, I'm responding to what you've said here. And giving reasons, based on only reading your posts in this thread, as to why I am sympathetic, but also pissed off.

I over-wrote tha last post. What I mean to say is, I've made that thread so I would not spoil other threads anymore. It's a trash-can thread. I thought they understood that.

ah, never mind me. I'm just whining, whinging, moaning, and complaining. I'll be better by morning

Actually, Meme, your comments here are more than welcome. This little talk of ours is making me feel better already. Go to the other thread and try to make a joke on me (a joke, mind you), if you feel like it. Or any other subject you want. I would really apreciate it.

hugs and kisses

look. Alot of many people's lives is awful.

And I know, that as UK resident, my version of awful is alot less bad than many others.

Including yours.

I would like to have a better understanding of this than I do. But I don't know what I can do about that. You tell me. Being a target for your aggression isn't an option I'm very up for.

I'm not going to parade brazillian friends I might have, as that would be really annoying.

But, personally (and this is much less common, as I understand it, in my society than in yours, and believe me that as far as I can do, I do appreciate the difference)I regularly work with people who have to be hidden/are in fear for their lives, so you'll forgive me if your assumptions leave me pretty cold.

You need to reconsider.

Megatron, might I suggest that some of the "misery" you're feeling is parallel to how gay people might feel having to put up with yet another person making jokes at the expense of their sexuality?

DM: So you'll pardon me if I don't give a rat's ass about people who apparently think the only issue in the planet is their own sexuality and how everyone is supposed to praise it at all times and never make any comment about it that is anything short of "wow, you are SOOOO great, I wish everyone is as elightened as you", even if such comment is in a thread created with the manifested purpose of working one's dark humor out of one's own system without disrupting more useful threads (and they claim I'm the one who's self-centered, for all the devils in hell's sake)

and

I'm not saying they shoudn't speak their minds, I just think it would be good for them if they had a sense of humour about themselves for a change.

Firstly, I don't think anyone on this board considers their sexuality more important than the rest of the planet. Someone supporting LGBT rights is by definition supporting them in all countries or not at all.

Secondly, it does come across as being pretty self centred to start a special thread just for you so that you don't rot other people's threads (because, you know, you "fuck shit up", as the kids say, and the po-faces can't stand it, so let's make a big issue out of how much ka0s you bring to the party).

Granted it's not as self centered as actually rotting those other threads but equally it might be better just to generally end rotting full stop.

Thirdly: the whole thing of having a sense of humour about one's self. For fuck's sake. Surely you read the PC thread, and the crabs in the barrel thread, right? Surely you understand that telling minorities to have a sense of humour, to take themselves less seriously, is just a piss-take?

Evidently, but oy do recognize that there might be other issues in the planet that are more pressing than gay rights? I do support gay rights, but I'm more worried about war, famine, global warming, etc, etc...

Well, yeah, but that's something that I think everybody shoud do, not just minorities, that's what I seem to fail to comunicate to you (and by "you", I mean all barbelithians, no gay folk). Middle-class adult white straight males should have more sense of humour and take themselves less seriously just as much.

And I'm fighting the fight too, make no mistake. Their fight as well as mine. That doesn't mean I'll let the Dark take my soul. I'll gaze into the Abyss and laught at its utter emptiness, its unrelenting cold. For one speck of light will fill it all and make it be no more. I just wish more people felt like that too. Do they?

When has anyone on Barbelith ever said that gay rights was more important than famine or war? Incidentally, as you put the priority on these things, does that mean that you would be happy to live in a peaceful world where everyone had plenty of food but only heterosexuality was allowed? I'm fairly sure you wouldn't but it's implied in your post.

Dude, people can spin anybody elses words any way they want, can't they? No, I would not at all. When one problem is solved, or mitigated at the very least, it's just time to move on to the next issue to be adressed. It never ends. No rest for the caring, that's what I say.

Anyway, as I said elsewhere, I surrender. I admit my mistake. The joke thread was in no way meant to "shadowsax" things out against anyone. I removed the joke, with all apologies, and I beg you to let me, and us, move one to the next subject. If you forgive me for being stupid that one time, I promise never to make another gay joke. I'll stick to outdated Monty Python references - except those about the french, of course...

Serious answer: There are lots of problems in the world. So many, in fact, that different people are differently placed to address them. People can seek to effect change in their own loves, in the lives of others, in the broader community, in the world, and so on.

Different people also have different priorities and different interests. This is, for example, why there are people trying to find a cure for cancer and people trying to find better drugs to manage the pain of people dying of cancer and people working as nurses to help people with cancer all at the same time. It is why there are people who lobby governments and people who throw bags of rice from the back of trucks. And there are people who seek to make the world a more socially just place, for example by helping people who are currently victims of discrimination not to be victims of discrimination.

These are all important processes. Many of them feed into each other - for example, educated women in a nation are not only a good thing in terms of sexual equality and a useful addition to the workforce but also a handy brake on population control. Gay men and lesbians able to live free of persecution or criminalisation can dedicate their energies to more productive causes. Black people with the vote feel more a part of the nation they live in. And so on. The idea that there is a top-down list of issues (priority decided, of course, by you) to be dealt with one by one is, if you'll forgive me, unwordly and fucking stupid.

At various times, you are going to bump up against the limits of any number of different causes. Often, our general lifestyles put us into opposition to the right of others to live, but to a very great extent it is possible for us not to notice. As a result, when we do notice it can be a bit disquieting to discover that somebody out there does not believe that we are such a champion of goodness as we believe. There are a number of ways to react to this, but turning your right to make gay jokes into a civil rights issue is not a sensible one.

Not really - for example, it would be borderline impossible for anyone to spin your contributions to the board thus far in such a way as to suggest you are anything more than a worthless shit of a man.

The difference, then, would be that I'm not making witless, piss-poor 'jokes' based on hackneyed sexual stereotyping of a central pillar of your identity, and expecting to be indulged by the targets of those 'jokes' on the grounds that I might've had a bad day.

Erm... Is this kind of insult acceptable around here? I know DM's posts are not doing himself any favours in this thread, but "worthless shit of a man" as a response to somebody who's obviously having a tough (and obviously confused) time? Seems very harsh to me. Am I wrong?

Quite. Nobody's Girl, don't you dare turn this into another bout of score-settling about Flyboy hating children. Unless that is ontopic by making us all miserable, which I suppose it is.

Flyboy - I think you're hurting your position by concentrating on the bad thing DM is rather than the bad things he does. If we can clean up behaviours, that minimises damage, and in the absence of suit deletion for being annoying it may be the best way to proceed.

miserable eh?

well let's see. in the last two months i've had to break up with my partner of 3 1/2yrs, having realised i didn't love her anymore. my granddad, whom i was very close to, has died, and finally, my dad and stepmother have announced their divorce.

oh, and i'm not going to get my dissertation in on time (if at all, the way i'm feeling). as you can imagine, i'm mightily miserable at the moment
