Sorry to be a pain, but - any more image host suggestions? I've tried loads of times but can't get Village Photos.com to load into my interwebnet visibox.

Saveloy -- I couldn't either, but I could by going here:

http://image.villagephotos.com/

And then following the link at the top left.

So maybe they check your referrer or something. I dunno.

Excellent, many thanks Ignatius_J! Next question is - has this worked, and can you see it?

I must honestly obey.
Is my hair ok?
It might hire oranges.

I just cant get the meaning of IMHO, am I thick or do I have a selective bypass in my brain when it comes to this?

Okay. So, you know the song D-I-V-O-R-C-E? I must have listened to it about a million times, and I still can't work out why they're getting divorced, given that she loves them both and this will be pure aitch-ee-double-L for her and she wishes that they could stop this D-I-V-O-R-C-E. And no motivation is given for him, either. Why don't they stop this D-I-V-O-R-C-E?

This is driving me mad.

(Bonus question: "everyone avoids me like a Cyclone Ranger". (1) What is a Cyclone Ranger? (2) What is the comparandum? Ie, am "I" like a Cyclone Ranger in that everyone avoids me, or is "everyone" like a Cyclone Ranger in that they are avoiding me?)

Sav> I've been using ListTailor for image hosting recently, mainly because Village Photo's bandwidth limit is a pain in the arse. The only drawback with LT is that they remove the image after three months, but that should be more than enough time for most stuff.

They also make you feel like a bit of a freeloader by showing you how many times you've used their service and how many donations you've made.

Deva:

From here.

Tammy Wynette, “D-I-V-O-R-C-E”
1968
The title holds the clue for this, the tale of Wynette’s relationship with her first husband, Euple Byrd, whom she married at age 17. Splitting after three years and three children, she became country legend George Jones’s third wife and musical partner in 1968. Seven years later, weary of Jones’s fascination with drugs, alcohol and shotguns, Wynette decided it was time for another D-I-V- . . . oh, you know.

Cyclone Rangers.

Although the Liz Phair FAQ suggests that it's a line from "Turning Japanese" by The Vapors:

What's that line from Turning Japanese, "Cyclone Ranger"?
The original version of Turning Japanese, recorded by The Vapors, contained the line, "everyone avoids me liked a psyched Lone Ranger." Lots of people think Liz's version sounds more like Cyclone Ranger, but it's hard to tell.

So there you go. A psyched Lone Ranger. Apparently, this means that Tonto would be pretty scarce. I dunno - maybe they think you'll rip off your mask, or pull out a six-shooter or something...

Cheers Guv. Does a bandwidth limit result in images taking ages to load?

I would've thought it meant that once your pics had been loaded up enough times to reach your bandwidth limit, they don't get loaded no mo'. At least until the next day.

It's really going to be the dodginess of your connection (or size of the pics themselves) that influence speed, I believe.

Aaaaah, thanks Rothkoid. I don't think I'll ever get the hang of bandwidth... It's the 'width' bit that gets me - I can't visualise it. I can see how you can use up a volumeor a set of bits - I can imagine that as an actual quantity - but a width? That's just a single dimension! Nope it's all wrong, someone should change it, definitely, yes.

Rothkoid: thank you. So, ironically, the unexplained motivation behind the D-I-V-O-R-C-E is the desire to write songs, such as D-I-V-O-R-C-E? God, that's deep. You could write an entire book about that.

New question, since this seems to be working very well:

I recently discovered a new slash writer who is stunningly brilliant and, on a conservative estimate, about four times better than I can ever dream of being. Instead of being pleased that such beautiful work is being given to the world, I went into a jealous, sulky rage and gloomed about going "there's no point in me even bothering, is there?"

Is this normal?

I don't know about normal, but that's how I am. Brilliant works of art crush me; but on the other hand, failures set my head on fire. And there's more of latter than the former, so it's an okay world to live in.

Haus - it's Resonant, but I'm only telling you on condition that you don't either (a) say that she sucks or (b) say that she is not four times better than me, since that will make me sad. She lives here . I think she might still be in fucking high fucking school. I've only read the HP stuff: thank God that's the only fandom we have in common or I really would quit in a huff. Warning: do not read "Bruise" unless you have a very high misery tolerance.

I am mostly over the jealous rage & screaming now, and am learning to take pleasure in her brilliance, but it's nice to know I'm not just mean-spirited and horrible: thanks, you similarly-foibled-ones.

"Is this normal?"

I don't know if I'm normal or not in this respect, but I find it depends on how well I know the person responsible. As long as I've never met them and am unlikely to then I'll happily celebrate and enjoy their work, recommend it to everyone I meet and be inspired to achieve something half as good. If it's a friend, family member or colleague, however, then I want to bash their smarmy head in with hammers for being such a lucky, gifted, oh-so-f***ing talented wanker. Especially friends, that's just unforgivable. Dead people are the best, really, they're the only ones you can completely trust.

Help help - what's the difference between a trope and a topos? I'm in 'historian trying to cope with literary criticism' hell over here.

Cat Chant
11:36 / 04.12.02
Um. Not sure, but etmologically "trope" means "turn" and "topos" means "place", so I suppose a trope is a particular movement of the text and a topos is a set-piece? One of the proper classicists on the board can probably do better for you.

ONLY NICE THINGS
11:45 / 04.12.02
Strictly, a trope is the turning use of a word, phrase or sense-unit from literal to metaphorical usage, and a topos (originally koinos tropos, a shared place) a stock theme in the genre, but trope is frequently used to suggest that the metaphorical usage has become in itself stock usage. So, "crime doesn't pay" might be topos of the detective novel, and the detective turning away from the diamond-laden body of the dead villain (thus demonstrating by the literal action of turning away that to take the diamonds would be more trouble than their value justified) would be a trope. I think.

The four great tropes are irony, metaphor, metonym and synechdoche, but others have subsequently been coined...

Mirrors again.

Went for a pint in a pub called the Dragon in Brighton. As I was drinking, I noticed my reflection in the mirror behind the corner of the bar. But...

As I moved, my reflection moved the opposite way: If I moved to my left, the enantimorph moved to my right and vice versa.

How?

KKC: I realize it's not actually correct, but I use "trope" for what should be "leit motif" all the time.

seanmc: I've seen dandelions open at night before, but it may have been a freak happenstance.

mixmage: Was the mirror actually a surveillance screen? Or was it reflecting another mirror at an angle behind you?

grant: No and no. That's why it puzzled me. There may have been a slight curve on the mirror, it's the only thing I could come up with, but even then I'm not too sure.

Anybody here from Brighton? Maybe check it out and tell me if I was halucinating? This is the place, I'm pretty sure of it - I wound up there following synchronicity rather than directions or road signs. Down the M23... even the link is to 323.html.

Why do boys' and girls' suits/shirts button up on the opposite sides?

Is is just so we don't (gasp) accidentally wear the wrong ones or is there some other reason?

Why do boys' and girls' suits/shirts button up on the opposite sides?

Clearly, it's because boys are meant to undress themselves, but girls are meant to be undressed by someone else.

or is it the other way around?
