I have swifts or swallows nesting above my room and loads of them spend every morning and evening zooming around in front of my flat. They're about level with me on the 5th floor, and they are great to watch. The 3 that live with me have just been playing with each other and me as I tried to take photos of them, circling around again and again, 3 feet from me and almost making me jump as they line up for the final approach and head straight for me, only to swerve up at the last second to pop into their hole.

This is the most infocus pic I got, but I just missed the whole bird.

In a weird way, coq, that makes it a much better photo of a swift than any photo with the whole bird in it ever could be.

I dunno, cog, that tail doesn't look like either a swallow or a swift (though Matt is right, it is a good bird photo). What do they look like when you can see all of one of them?

having checked the mighty Wiki, I can say that they are definitely swifts, and the picture there is pretty accurate for my lot. The forked tail does a lot of opening and closing for turns, and the photo was taken as it was just about to perch in its hole above my head, so a bit of braking would have been needed.

Did I mention that I also have bats, and that they come out at a slightly different time to the birds, in order to get some inscts as well. Here are the best pics I got.

yes, there is screaming too, but they are quiet when in the nest, which is lucky as it is in the ceiling space of my room.

I'm sure George Lucas got his inspiration for TIE fighters from them. The zipping around in groups, barrelling down the canyon-like Mediterranean streets, and the screeching sound.

It's silly, but alas bringing up that I came off as paternalistic and coming from a sense of superiority in the feminism 101 thread really does give me a happy. Because I wasn't seeing that element, before, primarily since I don't think anything I mentioned about my beliefs or ways of operating (not being comfortable under very large labels or seeing the use of them outside of being tools) if anything are a detriment, considering other people are able to do so comfortably and effectively.

If you're going to make an ass of yourself (semi-)publicly, might as well know why, even in restrospect.

The rest of what I'm feeling would fit in the miserable thread, but I use that one too much. And I really am happy to know.

After ten years of love of Fantasma and most of the other stuff he has produced, i had the fortune to watch Cornelius play live in Leeds last night.

He really was truly astounding. The band were one of the tightest i have ever seen live, and the music was juuuust right. I feel utterly fulfilled and have a certain strange desire to cry; like some big journey has been completed.

I also got to shake his hand! I asailed him with bad Japanese (Does "Sumimasen! Domo Arigato! Domo Arigato! Sugoi! Sugoi!" make anything near sense?) and he looked a little scared. But the hand was shook.

It's been years since i felt this level of kiddy excitement at seeing a band i like. I really just feel... Great.

I'm just a bit sad now that i can't find a cheap way to get to London for his gig in Koko on Wednesday. Anyone want to drive?

Neighbour's wifi rocks!! My neighbour's signal is more stable than the one from the shitty router in my house, but I have to put the laptop in a special magic spot for it to work. It's like we are living in Neuromancer (almost) and that makes me happy.
