Should there be an apostrophe in 7's there? I suspect not.

If there's a comma after the '7's', then yes.

A month long typo. Bleh.

Still, I like it.

Seven is in the continental fashion?

That's what I thought. No typo there perse, just a typo of intent.

What would "sevens in the continental fashion" mean, though, dude?

Happy Dave Has Left

It's actually a quote:

"He wrote his sevens in the continental fashion."

So, sadly no. I think I actually prefer that meaning though.

Ooh! I do that. My "E"s are Greek and my "a"s are Times New Roman, too.

Happy!

But I can't find an image of a barred seven.

Sad.

It makes me happy that two strangers on an internet discussion board just spent ten minutes Googling for pictures of the number seven, to no avail.

Whisky wins on points, as I couldn't even get it together to realise that what you call a seven that looks like that is barred. (I write mine that way too.)

Who on here reccomended Glastonbury Romance? Whoever it was, thankee very much. You will be pleased to know that 1930s first edition is winging its way towards me as we speak, for the cost of 5 pounds. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go and luxuriate by a mill pond, looking at rising fish.

The quote is from the WWII propaganda film 'Went the Day Well?' which I saw about five years ago one rainy Sunday afternoon.

It's about some dastardly German paratroopers, who, dressed as Brits, set up shop in a village in the English countryside, all speaking flawless English. And the reason they get found out is because one of the village women plays bridge with a few of them, and notices that "he wrote his sevens in the continental fashion." I was so charmed by the concept that just sixty odd years ago the country was so insular that their way of writing a number showed they were foreign, that I've written my sevens that way ever since.

Not forgetting the Chokolade...

I have to study that film at the moment, so it's quite vivid, especially as it's also surprisingly violent for, what, 1942? Especially the pepper-in-face / kill-with-axe moment, and, good lord, but the tension, too...

There was an our-kids-taught-foreign-nonsense story about continental 7s being forced on decent English children at primary school in our local freesheet when I was a kid. Xenophobia gets everywhere. I do my 7s continental now. Not that anyone can read my handwriting, which has gone beyond bad in the last few years into some kind of fiendish hieroglyphic code.

What a good day. Nice and sunny, I started off with a coffee and a chat for a couple of hours, then did my shopping. Spent the afternoon sitting on a bench reading a good book and drinking a beer, then met another friend and continued sitting on a different bench with a different beer while the world went by. Managed to say "No" to someone who I always say "yes" to. Very healthy for me. (they still haven't replied to my text. Must be the shock).

Tonight my flatmates are having a BBQ on the balcony, and after that I am meeting a bunch of people for some drinks. And I've spoken a lot of Spanish today and will speak a lot more tonight. Muy bien Cog.

Having my flat go slightly on fire last night (and the accompanying bill for having to fix the door where the police kicked it in) was less than happymaking, but having loads and loads of lovely people all tell me how glad they were that I was okay was truly wonderful.

Actually, I am also happy that my partner and my son are going out together and, (although I am not supposed to know this), are going to buy a Mother's Day gift for me. Woohoo!

Truth is, the alone time is gift enough!

Small fire which started while we were out (we think it might have been an incense stick on top of the bookshelves). Not too terrible although did have to pay to get the door fixed.

Wow, TTS. Good thing you were out! Years ago, I awoke to my door being busted in by some firefighters. I had come home late, and drunk, and I tried to reheat some lamb stew I had made the night before. I now call that recipe my "Sacrificial Lamb Stew".

I totally stripped down and rebuilt my old bike today -- pretty much everything but the frame and the rear derailleur have been mucked with over the last year now. There's still something wrong with the rear derailleur that I can't figure out, but so it goes.

Most of this to the soothing strains of the Leningrad Cowboys, too. Yow!

I'm currently given a happy by the fact that the place I live in is full of tremendous bands, who are always playing within staggering distance of my house. There's Morning Bride, who you all know of, there's Owlls, who those of you in the mix CD threads know of, and there's the Cesarians, who, if there's any justice in the world, you will all know of soon.
