So - a nice clip on IMDB with Snyder, and some unseen footage (there was a moment that showed what looked like the Comedian with a rifle behind the fence on the grassy knoll in Dallas, is that touched upon in the graphic novel?) coming across better than the above clip with Blunty - he has a nice manner and enthusiasm that I feel warm to.

Even if it has probably been dampened by the whole WB vs Fox thing, and news that Fox may get the distribution rights to the movie - not sure what the impact of this would be, would WB shelve it as a big loss, or go for the release and take the sizable hit on the loss of distribution? Or will a settlement be reached outside the box-office?

Despite Fox's threats, I don't think they'd be in any hurry to shelve it, and the only way WB recoups any money is to make sure it gets out. So I'm sure some sort of deal will be reached.

Ah if it were that simple - WB might lose money through the release by not seeing the recoup of costs, and a hit to their general stock, while Fox hits pay dirt from distribution and stock value rises, if that is the case, WB might well shelve it as a loss to balance against a bigger hit (Harry Potter, for example) thus paying less tax and keeping a bigger slice of the profits from that.

It might all be dependent on how much they've already spent in publicizing the film, and if they would still be responsible for those costs.

If you have the chance, check the HD version. It tickles the right spots, it does.

A curious thing happened to me, now that I bought the graphic novel for myself and got to re-read it (having only read a borrowed copy, eons ago). It made me think about Sin City, and the phenomenon where that movie made me realize how bad the comic was. Of course Watchmen is a much better work than Sin City, but it still packs enough cringe-inducing moments/lines per page (the reason why I can't help but cringe when I hear people talking about how it is this "totally serious literary masterpvnbmmbmbfffp"), that would stand out so glaringly in a live action movie, that now I'm in the weird state of mind where I'm actually thinking "God, I hope Zack changes that, that would be embarrassing..."

yeah i agree, there is definitely room for improvement and maybe snyder is the guy to do it, he definitely seems to know what works onscreen and what does not... let's not forget that comics and movies are two very different mediums, right?

Pfft. Not as long as the only words people can use to describe comics like this are 'cinematic'. Or, in the case of stuff like SANDMAN, 'literary'. It's a bastard medium.

Website with a Japanese trailer here.

Some interesting unseen scenes.

Anyone care to translate the voiceover and/or captions?

(voice) In [can't tell] world we need heroes, we need watchmen.

すべては一人の男の暗 殺から始まった女 - It all began with the assassination
of one man

事件を追う <顔のない謎の男>Chasing something [mysterious man with no face]

次々と消されるヒーローたち - one by one the heroes will be erased... Read More.

明からになる ウォッチメの真実 - The truth of the watchmen (or the watchmen's
truth) will come to the light

なぜ? Why (voive) The watchmen...? (He talks too fast here.)

誰か? Where? (voice) 何をしくんだのか? - What is being planned?

巨大な陰謀が動き出す - A big conspiracy will come alive.

正偽が -False truths

政界を救うのか- How do we save politics?

滅ぼすのか - Destroy it?

知ってはない 真実がある - I know there is no truth (or true answer)"

Only barely understanding in my fundamental Japanese this "new" trailer, yet I adore it.

What do you mean, Boboss? The clock was a fairly significant motif of the original.

Was it an artefact in the fictional world or was it some sort of meta device - an ominous symbol used between chapters, that sort of thing?

I have it in the latter category, but I can't remember it actually having a place in the story. Perhaps I'm wrong. I haven't read Watchmen in quite a while.

Well, clock imagery was everywhere in the Manhattan story, playing off the real, actual Cold War Doomsday Clock that I think there's no reason to believe wasn't a going concern in the Watchmen world (since Nixon and the Russians still existed there).

(By the way, we're currently five minutes to midnight.)

I honestly can't remember a character referring to it explicitly, although the juxtaposition of the watch repairs with the nuclear accident made it kind of inescapable.

Wow! The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists! Who fucking knew they existed?!

Okay, so the Doomsday Clock exists and has a presence in Watchmen the comic. Not sure I need explicit references in the form of dialogue, but then Hollywood does have a way of treating us all like idiot children which, sadly, I've grown accustomed to.

I thought there are specific references to the Doomsday clock as newspaper headlines, but not dialogue. Easy enough to show on film.

I do remember scenes where they used the clock in newspaper headlines to build up the "world on the brink!" paranoia throughout the book. And yes, as a meta device... if they want to spell it out a bit more in the movie, that's fine with me. It's an effective device to use to set the tone of the 80s Cold War mentality that some of the modern movie goers will not necessarily remember.

The official site has been given a complete overhaul with snazzy animations, voice clips (click "More" on each character to hear them all) and a taste of the film's score - which sounds as though it's highly influenced by Tangerine Dream and Vangelis for maximum 80s authenticity.

Latest complaint: Does Ozymandia's slightly effeminate appearance bother anyone else? Doesn't it fit into that well worn (and Snyder endorsed - see 300) Hollywood cliche of presenting the smart dangerous guys as a bit ladylike, a bit, dare I say it... poofy? Isn't that kind of iconography both politcally, philosophically and intellectually dodgy, and fundamentally lazy?

The film. I don't think of the comic version of Ozymandias as effeminate. Aryan, imperious, vain perhaps, but not effeminate.

Fuck, the comic version wears purple too doesn't he.

Oh well.

Carry on...
