I'm not sure if Haus was trying to defend the antics of this fic suit, exactly. It would be a mistake to see him as some sort of apologist, certainly.

Haus, on-line, as in life, is a decent, humane and intelligent man. And I'm more the other thing, to be honest.

Personally, Granny's antics are one of my favourite things about Barbelith, and I find it hard to feel sympathetic to anybody who does not find hir funny. That said, I do rather relish the thought of a banning thread, if only because hir going gently into the good night / raging against the dying of the light would likely prove to be the comedic highlight of hir career here.

You think this is a personal attack (in response to one)?

No, of course he doesn't.

Honestly.

Actually, I confess I found that slightly amusing, in a joke-without-a-punchline kind of a way.

Glenn Medeiros: Personally, Granny's antics are one of my favourite things about Barbelith, and I find it hard to feel sympathetic to anybody who does not find hir funny.

Well there you are Granny, what smashing support you have.

I personally find Granny's 'antics' distinctly unfunny; they're not 'antics', they're generally quite nasty comments about other people with a vague attempt at framing them in a jokular way. They're about as funny as the frequent snide posts Granny makes late at night, which are then put are for deletion in the harsh, cruel light of day but which the moderators sadly still have to read. Like the recent slating of board members with children - a delightful welcome last Sunday morning. Joyous.

I find Granny's posts which AREN'T directed at other board members hilarious, to be honest. Those ones are good.

It could be I just can't read anything by Granny without the having the nasty stuff sour it, plus I don't read comics and that is apparently a place where Granny can be funny.

But mainly the posts just wear me out.

But is he particularly sour, though? I don't know - he strikes me as a massive pisstaker, and he's not above taking the odd obvious potshot, but that's no different from loads of people I really, really love IRL. Isn't a bit of spikiness okay? Whatever. I fall down of the funny Granny side and I'd hate the Lith to be without him.

Spikiness to a purpose? Sure.

The Natural Way
14:27 / 28.01.08
See, that's where I just don't agree, but spikiness is perhaps, in this instance, too harsh an adjective, anyway. 'Mildly abrasive' seems more apt; but mileage may vary, I know that.

Was quite rude to Ganesh, tho'.

Jack Fear
14:49 / 28.01.08
that's where I just don't agree

With what? My premise that rudeness is okay when it's attached to substance? Or with my making a festish of "substance" to begin with?

Whichever. You are Wrong. Eat shit and die.

I kind of agree with Pigs! to an extent. I don't think Granny's attacks are meant to be taken personally- however, I think that in her gin-sodden state it doesn't seem to occur to him that, well, some of them obviously will be, and it's not hard to see why, because they're a bit fucking rude.

Well, but they clearly are, by some posters. And that ze posts while pissed is no excuse for behaviour likely to cause people to perceive slander, even if none was intended. Besides, how can we reliably tell what Granny's intent is or isn't? It's not like I'd trust ze's self-reports, truth be told.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
15:13 / 28.01.08
That's kind of what I was saying, really- I don't blame anyone for taking offense at what is clearly offensive, whether it was intended that way or not. Personally I don't think it was, but Granny really should realise that it is.

So, presuming that G does occasionally read posts like the previous while in a relatively non-pissed state of mind, would ze not know, by now, that not everyone finds ze's posts not only not funny, rather, on the contrary, offensive? And consequently, that the fic-suit that is Granny ought to change her approach somewhat?

I'm confused by this apathy. Don't we have the banning powers that we have always had? And given that no one is actually calling for a ban, it seems of marginal relevance anyhow.

ONLY NICE THINGS
16:23 / 28.01.08
Well, exactly. Negative attention isn't going to stop it, because he enjoys negative attention and pretty clearly when in his cups actively courts it. Condemnation from the board isn't going to stop it, because see above. Putting him on ignore _might_ stop it, because see above. Starting a banning thread probably won't, because of the lack of will to ban and the fundamental inefficiency of the banning system. So, unfortunately, the one possible function of Barbannoy - to register disapproval, open dialogue, vent steam - is not viable here, because there's nowhere for the steam to vent. You'll just get I am lower than a worm, I am less than human and the rest.

I mean, this was almost worth it for Jack Fear - Jack Fear! warning us of the dangers of pointless truculence, but beyond that I don't really see where we're going on this.

Venting is available, of course, and I think that there can be value in the realisation that other people share your concerns and irritation, which is why I posted. I am a little surprised by your position here, Haus, since leaving someone alone who enjoys negative attention doesn't seem like you, nor does it sound like great precedent. But then I guess Barbefatigue is probably a factor.

Well, if Rome had been on the Titanic it would at least have put the fire out.

Not for nothing has the name "Jack Fear" become synonymous with "prick."

I think you're being a bit hard on yourself, to be honest - in fact, doing a bit of an Alex's Grandma. You've more cornered the market in a rather performative curmudgeonliness, which often obscures what might actually be of use in your thoughts - quo vide the banning thread.

Lurid: well, yes. Barbefatigue is almost certainly an issue, but, you know, the other part is that Barbelith indulges people who seek [negative] attention all the time.
Some of them are merely ignored largely, or resignedly accepted, others are actively cosetted. Banning Shadowsax, who was clearly tickled pink to find a place with feminists he could abuse which wouldn't ban him out of hand, was such a mammoth weight to lob over the wall that it pretty much herniated the board.

Not an Annoy as such, but in my banning thread (during which whatever attention-seeking, masochistic urges I might have with regard to the internet were pretty much sated, at least for the forseeable future), Our Lady said:

I've visited your place, unless you moved very recently. Your kitchen (unless you've rearranged the house and plumbing), is on the first floor while there are downstairs and basement windows. Was he attempting an entrance from the roof, because he'd been doing some free running or whatever it's called?

Which seems worthy of comment. Basically, if you walk up the stairs to the flat above, and then jump (not difficult; I've managed it myself, in the sordid past) across to the ledge outside the kitchen window, it's then not too hard, if one is so minded, to at least try and rain bloody havoc down on the sensitive poets who reside in the rest of the place.

I didn't really object to the idea that AG was making the burglary thing up - although it raises the question of why an Epop, say cannot be questioned when he tells of his sufferings. He does, after all, live in something of a fictiverse.

It was the junior detectives, Nancy Drew stuff... I mean, either it's a lie or truth. As it happens, it was the truth, but leave that aside. If it's a big lie, what is with all this "Ah, but m'sieur, I 'ave been to your 'ouse, and zee kitchen is on ze uppair floor!" and "And you could not recognise the object as a car battery? So it please the court, a car battery resembles little other than a car battery, does it not? Did you think it, in your alarm, a large, prosaic jelly mold?".

Also, a perfectly good opportunity to ban AG was missed, again.

I find the fact that someone who has been Granny's house guest could then question the truth of a statement here, when evidently they could find out by email or PM or some other way, quite disturbing. The Nancy Drew bit, and the reference to free running, that just me made laugh. Not as ridiculous as the fact that someone started an AG banning thread, but nearly.

Sometimes I find Granny a bit much, but I'll defend her right to random spikiness to the end.

And Haus, now I have "Abide With Me" stuck in my head. Which may be fitting punishment for coming to warm my hands on the flames of burning Rome.

My experience of it is that I felt I'd walked into some sort of set-up (I had some notion that to everyone else, AG's burglary must be obviously a story, and I'd been a fool for taking it on the level and responding with sympathy) and that I'm now being mocked again for taking a slightly wounded, sceptical approach to the story when I felt I'd been tricked. I didn't mean to sound Nancy Drew.

I think the key point for me is that it's complicated when someone who seems to be constructing a lot of what they report about themselves on here tells a true story, stepping out of character.

Saturn's nod

I think one difference was that the Epop suit had a flavour more like 'confused and self-deluding bullshit' through his grandiosity and history of posts in Temple.

Granny has instead made a joke suit with a history of fictional self-accounts. The attitude of the 'Alex's Grandma' poster to my challenges in the past about his sincerity have been met with a response of something like 'oh, I was bored, I made it up'. That's been the flavour of the suit's posts.

Miss W: it's complicated when someone who seems to be constructing a lot of what they report about themselves on here tells a true story, stepping out of character.

I quite agree. I can understand why I was not the only person to consider the reported burglary with skepticism at first. I had formed the impression that self-serving fictions (along with drive-by sniping at 'outspoken' women, feminists, anti-racist activists, and other people with less class privilege than AG) were the history and character of the suit. The jokey tone of the report, and the subsequent comment of 'Surely the thing would fight to survive, like all life?' made it seem to me to be an (understandable) effort, in character for the suit, at distracting posters from topic or pleading for sympathy.

I'm sorry to hear that you've suffered that break-in and attack and burglary, AG. You have my sympathy, it sounds like a particularly horrible experience. I hope you have all the support you need for recovery.
