Excellent, cheers Flyboy!

Did I hear one of the toclafanes say something about escaping from "the darkness"?

I wonder if this is a different darkness to the one in which something was awaiting for Jack, according to some stupid woman in a different stupid show in which everyone including Jack was stupid.

The Doctor/Master was Harry/Draco long before Harry Potter...

Talking of the stupidity of Torchwood - I think I've identified perhaps the Master's one big mistake, and that's sending Jack's team off on that goose-chase. Surely he should have called them in to help the Doctor and friends. I mean that way they'd have pretty much neutralized the Doctor and Martha, via trapping them in horribly abusive sexual relationships in about five minutes flat, surely? Either that or stabbed them, anyway?

Even, a defender of Torchwood the show, was wondering why he bothered - the Master is a powerful hynotist and manipulator, it's not like he'd have needed to exert himself much to corrupt Owen bloody Harper, is it?

Maybe that would have been for the best.

The Doctor might have been forced to wipe them from continuity in order to save the day.

Okay, weirdness. I just rewatched The Christmas Invasion and, right after the Doctor keels over, Jackie brings a stephascope to Rose and says "Tina the cleaner's got this medical student, a lodger, she was fast asleep so I just took it".

Oooo eee oooo!

I confess I'm holding out for a John Sims-David Tennant snogathon.

Let's make it CANON Russell!

Bizarro Bad Touch I just rewatched The Christmas Invasion and, right after the Doctor keels over, Jackie brings a stephascope to Rose and says "Tina the cleaner's got this medical student, a lodger, she was fast asleep so I just took it".

Erm, what are you suggesting, that Martha is identifiable here because she's the only doctor/medical student who has ever used a stethoscope?

Everything is significant! Every farmer. Every postman. Every butcher. Every banker. Every... oh, I don't know - medical student?

jentacular dreams
14:41 / 26.06.07
I'm not sure whether it's intentional, but I was irked for most of the season by the way most of the alien races seemed to be lazily designed, animal heads on usually human(ish) bodies - with the exception of the salt vampire, the carrionites and the family of blood (all shapeshifter/parasite types). In retrospect, this almost allowed me to discard the possibility that YANA could be anything but human up until the watch came out.

The torchwood conversation was interesting - almost like RTD trying to justify it through Jack: "I made it in your honour..." etc.

I also like the doctor having to struggle a bit. He almost seemed to sail through the last season finale without any doubt he'd win through. This time though - eek. Roll on the last part.

Having Captain Jack around is good. Although it would appear to make him Angel to the Doctor's Buffy.

And if that's not a mental image to be proud of I don't know what is.

On the subject of mental images,

and this is pure speculation, so you've been warned, if need be

I have a very imaginative and certainly almost totally false mental image of next week's episode, wherein after the shiny-sphere aliens have come through, they're chased by the humans from utopia, whose arrival there was the coming darkness, and who have been at war (possibly mistakenly) with them ever since.

Like I say, utter crap. But I like my imagination, sometimes, because it surprises me.

Y'know, I actually had to cast my mind appreciably back, there?

Also, a true, dyed-in-the-wool cynic would say "And your point is?", but I'm not one of those.

I agree with you - but I have a rationalistic mind that, when presented with a problem like "Surely the scriptwriter's wouldn't reduce the entire remaining human population to tiny spherical killing machines without some sort of get-out?" comes up with increasingly random solutions.

Currently the equation runs at something like:

Over-aged Doctor + Immortal Captain Jack + Guerilla Martha Jones / Master + Toclaphane + Giant vortex in the sky = ?.

(So you can probably see why odd results come up.)

Mainly, it's the having to wait and see that drives me mad.

Was rewatching the latest ep drunkenly on TV On Demand last night. I think the Doctor/Master phone conversation is one of my favourite things on television EVER.

When did the music on this show get so good? (Even if they still can't always get the levels right...)

Shiny: Well Over Thirty

I's add when did the show in general get so, very, very good? I've always basically liked new Doctor Who, but the second half of this series has got me as excited about the show as I used to be about old Who, and I was a young boy then. This series has easily become my favourite of new Who and is showing the potential to compete with the last series of old Who for my affections. And that takes some doing.

Phone conversation: I could swear that the Doctor addressed Simm as "Martha"

Which was a little confusing but far more entertaining when Simm said "I love it when you use my name" ...

OMG- what if the 6 billion refers to the population of the alternate Earth in the 21st Century, and they've all been Cybered?

(Not quite sure how the Master could have swung that- unless it's not Cybermen related but is some nefarious Pokemonisation of the Earth by his bad self, but it would certainly break the Doctor's hearts given that Rose and family are there, as well as, well, literally everyone else...)

I'd rather Rose Tyler was never mentioned again, let alone seen.

Favourite crazy theory: the Master's wife is the Rani. Mmm, sweet crackpipe!

When did the music on this show get so good? (Even if they still can't always get the levels right...)

During the first season, the music made me cringe, mainly because the sound balance is so awful. Murray Gold's score for season 2 and 3 have been absolutely astonishingly good. Martha's theme and the Doctor's new theme, in particular are fantastic.

There's also a soundtrack CD available, but unfortunately it only features music from the first and second seasons (oh, and The Runaway Bride).

The great stuff is hearing reprises of previous scores underlining the thematic links with previous episodes...

Yeah, on my second viewing of this episode I was particularly impressed with the score. Last season was good, but there were bits here and there that really took you out of it. I also think Martha's theme is absolutely beautiful.
