A maelstrom (or malström) is a powerful whirlpool; a large, swirling body of water. The word is a compound of the Nordic words mala (to grind) and ström (stream). The word originates from the mythological story of Grottasöngr. The original Maelstrom is the Moskstraumen, a powerful tidal current in the Lofoten Islands off the Norwegian coast. From wikipedia.org

Three more shows left for this season, The Son Also Rises
and Crossroads Part 1 & 2, the titles of which are no fraking help to me trying to figure out if Starbuck is dead/a cylon/going to apear again in them cute little knickers. Bastards.

Neo's -- humanity's -- path is toward reunion with The Source, with God. At the same time, the machines' path is toward reunion with another God, the human beings who created them. They are each other's path to the divine. As the Oracle said, the only way forward is together. From here

Am I thinking to deep or is there the same sort of thing going on in this series. If Zion is the body, Machines are spirit and the matrix is mind, then in battlestar that could mean than Balltestar is the body? Cylons spirit and what would mind be? Space?

Hey, why don't you all just post every single spoiler you can find for the last three episodes so I don't have to bother watching them and be surprised in any way?

Ze was talking about the last three episodes, which have not been aired. I'm not sure whether talking about Katie Sackhof's contract, or listing the titles of the upcoming episodes, counts as spoiling, but I imagine that was the point of protest.

this would have been an amazing episode if it hadn't been preceded by three of the worst episodes in nu-BSG history aired IN A ROW, then BANG into "Starbuck's losing her mind" with no real build up to it. Self-destructiveness, sure, we've seen that since day one. But actual cracking up is a new thing and I would have much rather had the previous episodes ramp up a bit instead of wasting time on freaking UNION DISPUTES (easily the worst of the three, imo).

an awesome episode, ruined by the three-weeks of stand-alone episodes when there could be some actual development into the situation we're currently in. that's a major pet peeve of BSG for me -- all of a sudden, there's a strange doctor on the ship and we're supposed to care about him etc.

as this episode ended i was like WHAT THE FUCK. i think there's a major argument for shark-jumping here...

Was it me, or were the FX shots a bit revamped this ep?

Maybe it was just me, but it has been a while since we saw Vipers close up in combat...

it was the blue skies, we usually see the vipers against a black background.

so to those in the Starbuck is a Cylon camp, where is her body that she is going to be downloaded into? the known cylons have no idea what the final five models look like. they are therefore not on any ressurection ship currently being used by the Cylons. does this mean there has been a secret ship tailing Galactica around this whole time?

i think the writers have back themselves into a hole with this. the next Cyclons can't be revealed in a death unless they explain exactly where the new bodies for these new models are going to come from.

I'm with iamus with his 'as yet unrevealed third party' theory, it's gotta be.

Her new body was on the heavy raider.

One of the last FX shots of the fatal chase is from either Lee's point of view or a point just behind his Viper, and shows both Kara's fighter and the phantom Cylon raider, whereas in all the other shots where the raider appears it's presented as being from her perspective. He shouts the rather opaque "Visual!" which could be referring either to her bird or to both of them, but certainly the implication is the latter since both ships are in the frame at this point. This is either a continuity goof or their out to bring her back later.

Thanks akira, though maybe I should change that to a recently revealed fourth party.

I don't think it's as clear cut as Humans and Cylons anyway. Head Six and Head Baltar have never been working for one side or the other at any point, the only people they've been working in the favour of are Baltar and Six respectively. They don't seem interested in anyone getting the upper hand as they do influencing the flow of events.

We didn't see Leoben at any point in this episode. We first saw Starbuck dreaming of him, then we saw her having visions of him. He was never physically present. Didn't she say just after her mother dies "you're not Leoben" and he says "I didn't say I was", or something? Head Six said to Baltar that she was "an angel of God" when he was aboard the Cylon ship.

Also, Starbuck was the only one who could actually see the phantom Raider, but Heads Six and Baltar can never be seen by anyone else either.

I think this all might well have something to do with the final five, but if so I reckon it's more than just another couple of Cylons.

Finally, a television series which will answer the question which has puzzled me since the second season of Twin Peaks:

How many times can I say WORST EPISODE EVER?

Well, at least there was no voice saying, "Kara... go into the light!"

Yeesh.

Looking forward to the trial of Baltar like I look forward to a toothache.

Mr Rons' podcast says both that Starbuck is dead and her story hasn't finished yet, so I think she's going to come back as Lee Adama's special ghost friend that only he can see. Wacky hijinks ensue!

Just found out something cool: you remember the model ship Adama broke at the end of Maelstrom? Well, it was worth a hundred grand, and the decision to break it didn't come from the writers- it was Edward James Olmoss improvising, his 'you lookin' at me' moment and, I suspect, an expensive protest at the stupid, stupid storyline that got him to that scene.

sleazenation
19:18 / 11.03.07
Yeah, they mentioned that in the podcast.

kowalski
20:52 / 11.03.07
Yes, except in the podcast it was explained as him becoming completely overcome by the emotion his character was experiencing as a result of Starbuck's sudden, larkish and unconvincing death.

The episode was basically a combat-free (and Kat-free) rehash of Scar. But where Scar was reasonably good at getting us to go along with Thrace being driven by circumstances and personality to die there, this one completely fails to bring anyone along with her in its doom-song spell. It was as ascetic and sterile as the final act of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Bowman may be going on a journey beyond the infinite, and we're watching him do it, but it certainly isn't our journey. Same thing with Maelstrom.

Effects: Fantastic and convincing except for the dumb explosion at the end. The hard deck was supposed to be the horizon below which the Viper wouldn't have enough thrust to break out of the gas giant's gravity, not the point where said gravity would tear her bird apart.

Story: Like they filmed the executive summary they'd prepared for Sci-Fi Channel executives, instead of the real shooting script.

And yet still, it hooks me and I enjoy it anyway. Why must it be so good and bad at the same time?

Our Lady Has Left the Building
22:04 / 11.03.07
Well, if this were indeed the end for Starbuck then it would indeed suck, because it ignores so much of her past in favour of coming up with a seperate and as yet barely even touched upon storyline involving her abusive mother (much like Lee's abusive mother a couple of weeks ago, they could have scheduled that better). It doesn't really explain why God would go to such lengths to show her the rings in her life if He just wanted her to die, why not just let a Cylon raider splash her? It doesn't explain her fucked up relationships with Anders and Lee, although Ron's podcast seemed to imply to me that he thought that was an old and finished story, no harm, no foul, and they were all friends now and Dualla wouldn't ever be concerned about Lee and Starbuck being together because she was past that, et etc blah blah.

So basically, even though this writing staff gave us 'Black Market', I don't think they've gone so badly wrong as to write out Starbuck with 'Maelstrom'. I'm hoping she isn't one of the final five and would personally prefer the religious/mystical elements of this story to be dialled down a bit (at least when Ron was working on DS9 we could tell ourselves they were wormhole aliens), but I think she'll be back.

Planet B
11:18 / 12.03.07
well, if you thought last week was good and bad... then maybe you can find something good in this episode. I certainly couldn't. it was worse than I ever could have possibly imagined. it seems they've finally gone off the deep end where nothing that's going on is believable nor does it have any point or meaning.

I decided last week that I'd give them the final three episodes of the season to at least win me back enough to watch next season. Now I'm not sure I'll even make it through the next two episodes.

Is it really that bad? I've not had a chance to see it yet. That's one for this evening, along with Rome (awesome) and Simpsons, plus old Peter Davison Doctor Whos...

13:14 / 12.03.07
I thought it was alright. Better than the Union episode. Mark Sheppard as Romo Lampkin was cool and his cat is totally a cylon (well, maybe not but there is a pretty creepy scene with the cat). Also, we got to see Anders "handling" Starbuck's death.

What were the last couple of lines about? I got a bit confused by the whole thing?

Planet B
01:32 / 13.03.07
TC, it seemed the audio mix was bad through the entire episode. On the SciFi message boards, lots of people said they couldn't understand the lawyer (also because of his accent) and a few other interactions.

And what was that about Baltar being pregnant? a metaphor perhaps (about him hiding things in his pants), but a really stupid one if that's the case.

Robert B
01:35 / 13.03.07
I remember it had something to do with a son coming out from under his father's wing (I assumed it was referring to Lee going against Adama and choosing Lawyer over Soldier for the trial and representing Baltar).

Robert B
01:36 / 13.03.07
Maybe he's going to give birth to the Six in his head (ala Zeus/Jupiter, right? Sticking with the mythological references).

Our Lady Has Left the Building
07:57 / 13.03.07
I'm not sure what Planet B's problem was with this episode, rather than the absurdly mannered performance of Baltar's new lawyer I thought it was a solid piece of work, using the whole fallout of Starbuck's death to drive a seperate story, with that final bit of dialogue showing that Lee had been played like a cheap fiddle all the way through.

Was surprised with Cally's outburst against Athena though but I suppose they haven't had much time on screen together between Cally shooting Boomer and this episode in order for her to show us she's not keen on there being a Cylon in the team.

And how did the round thing show it was the sergeant that had planted the bomb on the Raptor?

Our Lady Has Left the Building
08:05 / 13.03.07
What do people think of the idea that women have had a rawer deal in this season of BSG? We've had three bad wives/mothers, Saul's wife, Lee's mother and Starbuck's mother, who all died for their sins, Cat and Starbuck gone, Deanna deactivated while Tigh lost an eye, Baltar got tortured and Lee and Anders had some emotional turmoil caused by Starbuck. With the focus returning to the humans in the second half of the season, the only strong female role model right now is Laura.

Grey Cell
10:09 / 13.03.07
"And how did the round thing show it was the sergeant that had planted the bomb on the Raptor?"

it was the same type of magnet that was used to attach the bombs to each raptor, and Lampkin stole it off the sergeant.

Surprised no one's commented on last night's episode. I thought it was great. I was a little taken aback by some of the implications of who the final five Cylons might be. Seems like four hints were given. Helo gets another new job. Rosalyn is hitting the psychedelics again. Tigh gets drunk. Lee goes against Adama. All the trappings of a good episode. Looking forward to the finale next week. Then nothing until next January.

When I saw Tigh fiddling with the radio, I got the distinct impression he may have accidentally picked up an old transmission from Earth...

But what's that about the music being "in the damn ship"? You'd think a warship that can take a nuclear strike head-on is a little too well-insulated to relay old radio transmissions like a mile-long ghettoblaster...

But yeah, for the first time in several episodes I found myself giving a damn again.

Six punching Tigh = ACENESS, even though I love that one-eyed bastard.

Yeah, I was really impressed with this episode. While being low on action, and for being a talking heads episode, it was very tense and very compelling.

What's with Roslyn's aide? Methinks she is worried about the trial, but I'm not sure why, exactly. Perhaps she was in cahoots with Baltar on New Caprica?

The preview at the end of the episode seem to suggest we will get some pandemonium and perhaps even answers about the Final Five.

I'd like to warn everyone, the screeners are out there, therefore spoilers for the finale are out and about, unfortunately. I'm trying to steer well away from them, so I thought I'd warn everyone else, too... don't click on any strange links...

Roslin's aide is named Tori, okay? And if there were any hints about who were the final five, I think they were definitely hinting at Tori being one as well. Didn't she actually hear that weird radio transmission, at some point?

Just a quick one to say I, too, loved that episode. Yay for the return of imaginary Six and Baltar!

It's funny - season 2 did something similar to this season - a bunch of quite boring episodes followed by a cracker of a finale. Looking forward to next week.
