Alex's Grandma

He does seem to be in way over his head here though, Saint Pete - He has a medical condition that it takes a certain amount of self-control to handle, apparently, so getting into a 'knocking boots' type situation live on UK telly does seem to be something that he'd, understandably, rather avoid. And he has been goaded a bit about this by some of the other housemates - Unlike say Slezar, Richard or George, I highly doubt Pete went into the house with the idea of adding a notch to his bedpost, so the fact that he now apparently could do must be a bit disturbing. So far anyway, he still seems very keenly aware of the cameras, in a way that some of the others already aren't.

If you're to avoid treating people shoddily, however, it's something that must be attempted.

Oh totally. It's probably easier for me to do, though, than for someone who's being watched by a godzillion people. I'd hazard a guess that it's probably easier for Pete also, when he's in the outside world.

Or indeed what Granny said.

Didn't Pete say something about not getting his tics when he's having sex? And anyway, I don't think that's what's stopping him.

With you 100%, Smoothly. The House is full of crashing BBores and, among them, Pete and Lisa stand out as a couple of nice people trying to be nice to one another. I also still have high hopes for them both, but think this will depend, ultimately, on Pete's ability to take that leap of faith. Certainly, Lisa's impressed me with her emotional intelligence: assertiveness when assertiveness is needed, but maintaining a lightness of touch throughout, which means no bridges are burned on either side.

Sorry, haven't seen it this evening, no doubt way behind the curve.

And yeah, I don't think it's Tourette's that's stopping Pete from properly addressing the situation with Lisa. Well, not directly, anyway. I suspect it's probably been instrumental in development of a certain wariness, however, when it comes to intimate relationships. He talked about having had bad experiences, and taking a long, lo-o-ong time to get to 'more than friends' level with anyone.

Pete and Lisa are definitely my favourite HMs at the moment.

I like Pete and Lisa but also Richard and Lea, the flawed parents of this year's precocious brood. I'm finding myself rooting for those who aren't in the smug hetero coupledom bloc - and wondering whether this year will see a reversal of the received wisdom that being in a potential boy/girl lerrrve situation is a BB survival trait.

Interestingly, according to the William Hill odds, Lisa's chances are declining, and Nikki and Imogen are on the rise.

"Bunny boiler" effect? In Nikki's case, there's a small but growing element of suffering/victimness as well as perceived reasonableness in that she sat down and talked with (Dis)Grace. Imogen, though? Because she's denying Slezer that which he reckons he deserves?

Smoothly
11:40 / 29.05.06
I can only assume so. In absolute terms, Sezer and Grace have slipped too (25/1), so it looks like Imogen and Nikki are winning their respective battles.

The Nikki/Grace sit-down hasn't been on the peaktime highlights yet, but I expect that will boost Nikki further. So far, she seems to be doing well just by being honest and 'readable'.

BB viewers love a 'journey', and I guess that's what's reflected in the overall rise of Pete, Glyn and Nikki. Although what George is doing in 4th place is a bit of a mystery.

I think anyone who's not one of the smug marrieds (and Imogen's clearly ambivalent about it) is doing okay in the ratings.

New Housemates to go in tonight, in a live 'only a gameshow' special. Hoo-fucking-ray.

While we're waiting, can we take a moment to consider Russell Brand, host of Big Brother's Big Mouth? Now, I've barely managed to watch 5 minutes of BBBM because I cannot stand Russell Brand. But everyone seems to love him. I have to dial down my full hatred while at work, because most of my colleagues seem to positively like him (enjoy him, even), my friends seem at worst indifferent or unfamiliar, and even the press appear to immune. Andrew Anthony in this weeks Observer says:

"To my mind, some of the most entertaining television of the past year was to be found in Celebrity Big Brother's Big Mouth, and all of it was due to Russell Brand... [He has] an instinctive ability to reach out of the screen and grab the viewer by the funny bone."

In the Sunday Times he was described as "possibly the sexiest man on television ever".

Personally, Brand misses my funny bone completely and grabs a big old fistful of spleen, and I find him about as sexy as George Galloway in that cat suit.
What's wrong with me? Am I alone?

I actually quite like him, although I'd agree he straddles the amusing/irritating line and quite frequently tips into the latter. He did a quite astoundingly bad stand-up routine one week at Duckie (he'd had Amy Lame on BBBM and presumably returned the favour by performing at her club night): he'd have been okay if he'd relaxed and realised that, actually, it's one of the least hostile audiences evar(1!); as it was, he misinterpreted so-bad-it's-funny groaning (in response to a faintly off-colour joke) as we-disapprove-wholeheartedly booing (which it certainly wasn't) and went off on a pointless and unwarranted ooh-don't-get-all-PC tangent which fell completely flat because people didn't understand what he was burbling on about. He sort of rallied, but not in time to save the routine. Suspect he has 'issues' with gay people; or, at least, on that occasion, had preconceived ideas of how a gay audience might behave.

But... yeah. He doesn't bother me too much, actually. I hated him the first year he was on, but I've mellowed a fair bit in the interim.

I agree on the line of amusing/irritating. I feel myself quite conflicted by him in a "Oh, I hate that guy!" but then find myself laughing at something he says later. His sense of humour often seems quite close to mine in what he might say, but there's a level of overblown arrogance and twattery that seems to come with it. An element of "I'm great me and I get all the girlies oooh look at me!" that simultaneously creeps me out.

His appearance on Jonathan Ross was like the pinnacle of this. In a "Ha ha I am laughing... but stop doing that. Please? Ha. Oh." and so on.

Weaving, S : I find him about as sexy as George Galloway in that cat suit. What's wrong with me? Am I alone?

I saw the trailer for BBBM and his 10 second intro to that made me do a bit of a sick in my mouth. So no, you are not alone. If he can be funny sometimes I might watch a bit of BBBM, but I'm not holding out a lot of hope.

I wanted to smack Grace and George for being horrible about Nikki. "Proper slags", forsooth. Sorry if this ground has already been covered.

I'm still with Bob Geldof on this, but I might steel myself through an edition of BBBM and see if I've mellowed too.

I just clicked that link, saw a picture of him, and I don't think I'm going to be able to watch him for more than ten seconds.

"There's nothing I can say, there's nothing I can do."
Well, yes, Nikki, there's not being a horrible drama queen with Jackie O sunglasses and an attitude problem. I hadn't realised how much I disliked her until now.
Grace is exhibiting lots of middle-class well-brought-up crying-in-private pain now but still making sense. What's the betting she'll be quietly cutting soon?

Nikki on Grace: She's so self absorbed! Me me me! I'm sick of hearing about fucking me! Pot, kettle, blackness.

I dislike Grace heartily abd Nikki's an arse but at least she's funny with it. I fail to see the point of Grace entirely. Her previous bitching session about Nikki, pointing out that Nikki's friends were dirty sluts doesn't sit well with her butter-wouldn't-meltness. Nikki's annoying, no doubt, but Grace is nasty.

Actually I think the Jackie O sunglasses are quite fitting for the drama queen meltdown.

I also dislike Grace quite intensely. She says things like "I don't look down on people" and you just think Grace, you have no idea who you are because earlier she was looking down on women who get their breasts out for magazines. She contradicts herself constantly, she's extremely dishonest about who she is (probably to herself as well as everyone else).

Jack Vincennes
19:52 / 29.05.06
I have a lot of sympathy for Nikki on this one -she was nasty to Grace, sure, but just because she was really cross. Grace has been consistently unpleasant about more or less anyone who isn't her to other people, I think that living with someone like that would actually make me become Nikki within days.

You are, of course, joking. Aren't you? Grace is dispelling her "pain" somewhat less privately, by impugning Nikki's (presumed) sexual immorality based on her 'slaggy' clothing. Very middle-class.

Not terrrribly sure what Davina meant with the "technically 'he'" thing...

Yes, very upper-middle class and that's the point. Trying to disguise being nasty by being friendly is a classic position for some people. It's not going to help with the fact that there's some underlying insecurity she's not addressing in public, hence waiting to hit the the diary room for the tears. I just feel a pressure building that will have to be released somehow.
I feel I must also apologise for my original comment on Pete. He's bloody great.
