Decadent: please to change your name to Decedent Nightfalling, now that you have found the word?

It would be so pleasingly Gothic ...

A question to any latin lovers out there:

I've been asked to translate some English into Latin by someone who foolishly believes my claim that my half-remembered Latin A level makes me some kinda crazy linguist.

And I can't do it. I've forgotten everything I ever knew about structure and declension - can you help? For secret reasons, it's important that the translation is 100% accurate.

The line is;

"Always a leg to stand on" or, I guess "Always (have) a leg to stand on"

So far I've got

'Usquequaque (habere?) cruris in stat'

and I know this is wrong in a bunch of ways, not least because I don't know how to decline cruris or how it's affected by the 'always' and the 'standing on'.

As ever, grateful for your help.

seems like the longer I sit here, the slower my computer runs...eventually, about 5 hours into the work day, I get a "low on virtual memory" message.

using task manager I see that about half the RAM is being used by...firefox?? it seems to start out using about 35 MB but after a few hours it's up to 130 Megs.

obviously this computer's crap and needs more memory anyway, but does anyone else have this problem? I had 2 tabs open, one with hotmail, one with craigslist. does firefox have a memory leak or something? is this evidence of some kind of spyware? I've tried AVG anti-spyware and it didn't find anything.

maybe the boss is tracking internet usage at work and his software's sloppy??

I don't think it's very likely that you'd come up against a memory issue in Firefox just normally. But if you have some interesting plugins or something?
A quick test indicates that Firefox doesn't dispose of Java applets until you close all of it's windows. So if you'd browsed a site that uses Java it could still be using lots of memory even though you've closed the tab or window for that site. I don't know but the same could well apply for things like Flash as well.
In any case the workaround is obviously to close Firefox every so often.
Hope this helps.

Is there any such thing as a group for Muslim Women's rights? I need to convince someone on a "discussion" board that not all Muslim women are forced to wear the burka.

In terms of self-organised kick-arse Muslim women, there's the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan. And Southall Black Sisters who have been fantastic since 1979.

Anyone who has watched Blade Runner quite often - Pris (Daryl Hannah) when she has the dense black band of eyemakeup - what is she wearing from teh waist down?

I can only find images of her top half online, or subsequent fan art/fancy dress/computer re-imaginings of her (which make her look, I suspect, saucier and less tatty).

My main queries: skirt, shorts, trousers, leggings? Visible stockings? Boots, heels, or what?

Ta muchly, my dears.

I've got it into my head that it's a kind of frilly, lacey, petticoat ballerina skirt thing.

No, your memory is not weak. She has that outfit in a later scene, when she disguises herself as a robot doll, to fool Deckard.

I think it's a black leotard with ripped stockings and some kind of tutu and wedding veil combination, like so; well a combination of these two:

Is there a way to convert YouTube videos to mp3s?

Alternatively, does anyone know where I could find a mp3 file of Amy Winehouse singing Cupid?

Audio Hijack or similar will take whatever sounds play on your soundcard and record them so you can convert to mp3.

Ex, you're going to a fancy dress party as her, aren't you?

Second question: can I come too?

It's one of the things that worries me off real-life Barbe-meets (aside from distance, et al); everyone shows up decked toes to crown like Pris in various states and kit, and there's me dressed like Hauer in his last scene... from Split Second. Forever a halfstep, a skip, and a long drop down from the theme, lost like tears in rain.

The world would be a much cooler place if everybody dressed like Pris from Blade Runner. Or at least had the same makeup.

What's a good sturdy houseplant?

My Mom Thinks I'm Cool

my sister the tropical botanist recommends orchids as being pretty and also hard to kill. but it depends on why they tend to get kilt.

basically if you live in any reasonably humid environment you can stick an orchid in a pot and ignore it for the rest of its life, which will be long and happy.

on the other hand, if you tend to over water things, or over-fuss with things, etc., the orchid will not like you. LEAVE ORCHID ALONE.

I'm not a botanist or horticulturist though, so maybe go for second opinion.

I remember occasionally being able to keep spider plants alive when I was a kid.

Or get one of those plants that happily sits in a fish bowl and the fish eats the plant and the plant eats the fish poo and you never have to do anything but watch the fish and the plant, doing their thing.

I'm thinking just green. No flowers. So orchids, lovely as they are, are out of the question.

Spiderplants are a possibility, though. They're hardy, are they?

Ava Banana

I've always found spiderplants to be very hardy, even my mum couldn't kill hers and she managed to do away with a cactus.

Spiderplants are notoriously sturdy, it's true. Less showy, in many ways, than an orchid would be, though attractive in their own ways.

And, of course, I've gone in the past ten minutes from not wanting any kind of houseplant at all to kinda wanting both a spiderplant and an orchid. And some fish. I haven't kept fish since I was about eight, but imagine the routines on goldfish, say, haven't changed much.

I'm gonna get me a spiderplant (or even two!).

Before you rush out, I'd consider a Yucca. I kill just about everything I put in a pot (weird because I am so good at growing things in the actual earth) and I have had a yucca in a pot for 3 years now and it's still happy as ever with minimal attention. And they look kinda cool and spiky.

My Mom Thinks I'm Cool

it's fun to put a spider plant on something high and watch it slowly cascade down over the years. they're like green fireworks.

or you can cut the cascades off and put them into new pots.
