OK. Number 1 is _stop using floppy discs_, or at least back up everything on them. They are a terribly inefficient and vulnerable method of storage, and you can get the contents of a hundred of them on a $5 USB drive. If your computer is too old to have USB ports, which seems highly unlikely, store them as documents in your gmail account or similar. IF you don't get them off floppy disk, expect to lose your data.
Number 2 - do you mean that the metal guard has been bent upwards, so that it doesn't go in the floppy disk drive? If so, that guard is there to prevent damage to the magnetic tape in the disk when it is not in the drive. It has no effect on the utility of the disk, only its durability. So, you can lever off the metal guard completely - then load the disk and immediately copy and back up the data on it. The disk won't survive long outside a drive without its guard, but it will work fine in a drive. |
