Does anybody have a link to that study showing the demographic breakdown on suicide bombers in the Middle East? I need it fairly quickly for an argument on another board.

Check Switchboard here (thread titled "The Suicide Bomber") and look here, at Jane's - scroll down for a one by-the-numbers estimate. According to some figures, the Tamil Tigers are responsible for more than 50% of *all* suicide attacks (although I think that includes things like boat-bombs and kamikaze-style attacks with microplanes).

Or letting Wikipedia answer it really: the Cigar store Indian.

I'm really surprised that there was a whole entry on that. I'd started to wonder whether they go were made over in the States as well, which they were, but not at first. Hmmm.

I answered my own question about where to donate for helping the survivors of the Greek Wildfires.

I asked the Hellenic pagan website in Greece for what on the ground charity was the best to help people and they responded with a great site:

I help Greece

We should not remain simply spectators of the disaster. The victims need hands-on solidarity from everyone.

“I help Greece” is an initiative aiming at mobilizing the public both in Greece and abroad to collect money that will be given to the afflicted citizens in the fire-stricken regions. Any contribution made by each of us is valuable, regardless of the nature and amount of the financial aid we offer.

Any natural or legal entity desiring to contribute may do so via this webpage by depositing a monetary donation via their credit card. The money is forwarded in collaboration with EFG Eurobank Ergasias Bank without transaction charges or other commissions to the special account of the Fund in Aid of the Fire-stricken areas set up by the Ministry of Economy & Finance.

Please consider sending them your weekend's bar tab amount as the devastation is unbelievable.

Thank you!

how does one go about becoming a rugged sailor these days? surely we still ship things by boat. I'm not really too interested in fishing ships...more like freight. hauling boxes around? swabbing the deck? can you still get that job? where do you get started? is there a union or something?

have I asked this here before? hope not...it's a question that periodically surfaces in my mind, usually when I get bored with whatever I'm doing and entertain stupid fantasies of jobs I'd probably actually hate.

Or you could just join the Merchant Marine.

Many years ago, I worked for a month-and-a-half out of Louisiana and Texas on a supply boat for an oil rig (I went to the Coast Guard in Memphis to get my Merchant Marine document, I think it's called). Let's just say I got the fuck out of there early. It was a fascinating experience, I'm glad I had it, but god it was nuts. I started writing out the experience and realized it was just too much to get into, especially in this thread (is there an "insane jobs from hell" thread anywhere?). I'm sure there are as many different experiences to be had on the sea as you can imagine, so if you do it, good luck finding a good one.

Guys, a few weeks ago we bought a second hand chest of drawers.

It smells musty.

How do we make it smell unmusty?

We have tried:
Washing it
Leaving in the hot sun
Sanding it with an electric sander
And then washing it with bicarbonate of soda

All the above were suggested by people who seem to have a degree of expertise in this area. None of it has worked

Help.

Must is a moisture problem, yes? Maybe pouring salt in all the drawers and letting it sit for a bit as a desiccant? Or rice? Rice might give you a critter problem, though.

There's also the time-honoured and chemically horrible solution of mothballs, but then your chest will smell like mothballs, which isn't a huge step up IMO.

Well instead of mothballs there is cedar wood things you can get, they have a scent so I wonder if they would lift off the smell of mustyness?

Have you tried vinegar? I've never had cause to use this myself, but I remember hearing about putting a saucer of vinegar in an old cupboard to get rid of the smell. (Hopefully the smell of vinegar will eventually dissipate too.)

Vinegar's good for alkaline smells - the stuff baking soda isn't great for (animal urine & ammonia).

I think cedar might be better, but it wouldn't hurt to try both.

Does it smell more like old animals or mildew?

coffee grinds work sweet. Buy a big ass can(s) of cheap pre ground coffee and fill the drawers leave over night or a few days.

One of my friends taught me to do this with musty old books as well as furniture.
works awesome.

I think the ultimate stink-buster for woodwork (this is what is used to seal/cover smoke smell from a fire) would be shellac. Get yourself a small container of clear shellac and a throwaway brush or two. I'd give it at least two coats to be sure you've covered everything. Shellac dries very quickly which means you can coat it twice in a couple of hours, but also means you must work quickly to avoid messy brush lines etc. For best results give a it a quick, light hand-sanding between coats.

ibis the being
17:54 / 12.09.07
Oh and by the way, shellac is a beautiful furniture finish but be advised it is alcohol soluable, which does mean setting down a messy glass of vodka rocks could ruin your finish. You could try just coating the insides of the thing... or... you could go in the opposite direction and really do it up - shellac everything, then give it a nice wax polish!

Actually, I believe one of our many Matts started a thread a while ago on this topic regarding his own shit at a call centre (there may have been Sales involved too, for maximum shititude).

It's here, and I link to it only to make it clear that I don't really take myself or my job quite as head-up-the-arse seriously as my posts therein indicate. But I can say that happily as I've had a 90%+ service score for the last two quarters. After you with that cutlass, Trips.

Stinklet: There's a Conspiracy Theory thread in one of those forums. I think Ganesh started it. I know there's a more specific 9/11 conspiracy theory thread in SwBd which might veer into the turf, but that's not the one I'm thinking of.

Can someone tel me if there is anyway to repair a floppy disk that has had the metal part pulled up?

I think I might cry.

OK. Number 1 is _stop using floppy discs_, or at least back up everything on them. They are a terribly inefficient and vulnerable method of storage, and you can get the contents of a hundred of them on a $5 USB drive. If your computer is too old to have USB ports, which seems highly unlikely, store them as documents in your gmail account or similar. IF you don't get them off floppy disk, expect to lose your data.

Number 2 - do you mean that the metal guard has been bent upwards, so that it doesn't go in the floppy disk drive? If so, that guard is there to prevent damage to the magnetic tape in the disk when it is not in the drive. It has no effect on the utility of the disk, only its durability. So, you can lever off the metal guard completely - then load the disk and immediately copy and back up the data on it. The disk won't survive long outside a drive without its guard, but it will work fine in a drive.

Thank you Haus. I will try taking the guard off.

I had to work on a computer at school that is not hooked up to the internet, and my own as well, which is. I need a storage that I can update as well as transfer between two computers, one of which is not online, as I have mentioned. A CD-ROM didn't seem to fit that bill. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Okay, I shall be inserting the floppy, nekkid. Will let you know how it goes.

I have done a sigil to preserve the data, by imagining a thoughtform of Morpheus from The Matrix embracing the data, which I imagine in the form of a glowing blue kitten made of energy, and carrying it to safety.

Medulla, I just got a 2GB pen drive from amazon, for £15 or so - US$30. If you can squeeze the files you need to transfer onto a floppy, you only _need_ 1.5MB of space. The smallest pen drive you are likely to find is 32MB - the challenge might be to find someone who is still selling them, but eBay.ca or similar may work for you - they are going for US$5 on ebay.com...
