Mordant - don't worry about starting at the beginning, just start from something you wrote that really interests you. Beginnings are always the hardest part.

i have a 120gb hard drive that i have been trying to empty as much as possible. currently stored on it i have about 30GB(or less) of music, about 10gb of video, less than 5gb of photos and a few odds and ends of HTML, txt, doc, etc.
HardDrive>Properties tells me i am using 98gb...
what files might be taking up stupid amounts of memory that i havent thought about?

i dont run games on the machine, and virus/spyware tests are coming back negative.
i'm pure lost.

I often find that deleting EVERYTHING in the windows/temp folder helps. Any program that needs anything that's been left in there should be soundly thrashed. It's often the really small files that cause a problem: even if they have just a few bytes in them, I think there's a minimum file size of a couple of Kb, so they take up a disproportionate amount of space. That is, a few hundred files that should only be about 1Kb can bloat up to a Gig or so. Savegame files are a bad culprit for this, as are emails.

yeah.
i just had a look, and they seem to be negligible.
i do delete temporary files pretty regularly.

having a look at itunes, it seems that i have twice as much music as i used to.
i think i miusnderstood what they meant by 'consolidate', and have copied all my music(to be found in the itunes folder) into the itunes folder(uh... yeah. that same one).
i was kinda hoping i would end up with all my music in one place and all the doubles deleted. it seems i was wrong.
i have two(and sometimes three..?) copies of the same music.

i'm still a bit baffled as to where all the space has gone, but that does account for a whack of it

heh.
new question...
will using the 'show duplicates' work for getting rid of the doubles? select all and delete? or will i risk losing all the music i have accrued?

i prolly sound hopelessly lost and paranoid, but the thought of starting again makes me wibbly.

I had a problem with duplicate music files, too.

What I did:
I made a file for every music artist. In that file I created a file for every album and then of course put the album songs in the respective file.

That way I got rid of a lot of duplicate music. Before that my music folders were a mess, scattered over several folders and harddrives. And when itunes or winamp messed up, a lot of work was gone.

That´s why another thing is important:
If you can find the time, check and correct the tag of every music file (my tags often were hopelessly useless or wrong). When itunes or winamp crashes again, nothing is lost (except for the ratings).

...except i have two or three or four copies of every single song. this isnt accidental duplicate downloads of a track i already have. this is itunes duplicating every track on the hard drive and putting the copies in the same place as the originals. i have a folder for the album leviathan, right? and that has thirty tracks in it.
but its a ten track album.

i dont want to go through 10,000 songs one by one, altering tags and delting duplicates, so i am fucked, arent i?

please, someone with an interest in preserving the lives of those around me,tell me i am not fucked.

There are programs you can use... they are on my old PC, which I think is dead, but a google search for something like "dupe remover" may be a good place to start.

Otherwise, you could do a Windows search for the file ending .mpg or .wma, arrange it alphabetically and then delete the duplicates. Time-consuming, but not as time-consuming - most of the time is leaving the computer to get on with it. In my experience, this takes an evening or so of fairly solid graft - you'll get fixated, so don't do it any day when you have to get up early.

cool.
currently test-driving the ronseal-esque 'duplicte file detective'.
hopefully this means i wont have to spend a day going through 50gb of music song by song...

if you dont see me on the news covered in someone else's blood then it worked.

"Reek" is a falsetto word, almost, redolent of particularly spear-like smells such as dog shit, whereas "Stink" is more treble-sounding, bringing to mind that particular brand of urine which shares it's smell with Sugar Puffs. What single word, then, can be used to describe the deep, bottom-of-the-nose woof that comes from old semen stains or the post-curry fart?

Char Aina
14:42 / 16.01.06
stench?

Saveloy
14:43 / 16.01.06
Stench? Nah, too high pitched. Stench is for ammonia-based smells and, of course, death.

Perhaps a new word is required? How about "clough"? That certainly fits curry farts. Semen stains would be "tune".

Char Aina

see, i think we come from different nasal places.
i think of reek as a smell like after drink sweat, and your description of the spearing scent of dog faweces doesnt ring true for me.

how about malodourous stench?

You could use the german word Mief (pronounced meef).

Oh, yeah, while I have a minute, toks, try MediaMonkey. It has a good duplicate remover, and you can tag multiple stuff using Amazon listings (very neat). I think you have to pay for that functionality, but I'd never go back to anything else. Best tenner I've spent for a long time.

I've been contemplating getting an iPod, and it appears that buying from Amazon in the US will cost me just under £200, whereas buying from Amazon.co.uk will cost me £293.

Is there anything wrong with my rapidly forming plan to buy it from the US and save about £100?

I thought there may be an issue with charging the battery, since the US have very different voltages, but it seems that it charges itself using the USB cable, not some charger.

Even if I had to pay some import taxes, surely they'd be less than £100? It can't this this easy, surely?

Does anyone know hether the police are always contacted in the wake of a drug overdose? If so, what form does that contact normally take?

Don't worry, this is purely research.

Virtual Names have always stood me in fairly good stead over the last 5-6 years or so, and are reasonably priced. It matters in as much as you want to make sure it's not some fly-by-night operation who might disappear along with a solid trail to your ownership of a domain name. The important thing to rmemeber is to keep on renewing the domain once you have bought it.

Some ISPs offer the purchase of a domain name as part of your contract too.

I remember reading about this place in the UK. I think it's a large stately home, and in the garden there's a tower. It's not your usual tower, though, in that it's based around the number three: three sides, triangular doors and windows, three triangular parapets etcetera. I think it may be green. Does anyone know anything about this?

This might be a stupid question but here goes....

Humans descended from apes, but what came before apes? Do we know which animals we are most closely related to besides other primates?

■
20:59 / 19.01.06
Probably not the one you're looking for but there's a peachy keen follies website with a triangular tower here.
Mammalian ancestors? Ooh, dunno. I think we're all descended from ratlike things, so my guess would be badgers. Yes. Badgers are our closest cousins.

[Disclaimer: this is totally made-up]

Actually humans weren't descended from apes -- we share a common ancestor, Pierolapithecus catalaunicus, something somewhat more primitive than Australopithecus.

Before that would be something more lemur-like or even shrew-like.

Behold! The Tree of Life!

You'll find more useful information here at Paleorama, in about the 25-30 MYA (million years ago) range. Remember, we're catarrhine primates. I find it easier to read that timeline from the bottom up.

For a more specific answer, here: A group of small, nocturnal and arboreal, insect-eating mammals called the Euarchonta begins a speciation that will lead to the primates, tree shrew and flying lemur orders.

Tree shrews and flying lemurs.

Following on from the website domain buying question - I've heard they'll be intorducing a straight .eu ending, but can't find any more information on this. Will the .eu ending happen and if so when? I know you can already have .eu.com etc but I'm interested in only .eu ending.

I had a problem with duplicate music files, too.

CloneSpy should do the trick. The site's down for maintenance, but you can still download the programme.

The .eu TLD (top-level domain) came into effect on 7th December 2005. Getting your registration in early seems to be the best plan.

Go to Control Panel and then to Sound and Audio Devices you should be able to moderate different sound effects from there.
