I'm looking for an on-line text for La Casa de Bernarda Alba, in english if possible. No money to buy it, library is out of copies, cliff notes baffling, essay pending.

This is gonna be hard to find online in English, I think: first published in English 1955 would mean it's still in copyright...

Thanks Jack it's very much appreciated.
The language is pretty simple so I can muddle through it in Spanish reasonably well anyway.

Again I ask: Where would be a good place to hide next year during the soccer world championship?

The United States of America.

Question about Charity

Is it possible to prove how effective or ineffective the actions of a charity are? I'm thinking specifically of large charities working in developing countries. More specifically, how would one know if they were giving money to local warlords etc?

This question stems from a 'discussion' on The Idler forum which kicks off here.

Not really IMHO. Most of the siphoning of funds is either forced (gunpoint re-allocation of resources) or necessary (bribe some warlord to let you past with a truck of food), rather than corruption in the charity itself. Most charities are pretty open about their finances, you can get their annual report and peruse it, but if there were shenanigans it would be very difficult to prove.

Child of Mirror, child of ibis, obviously. Climbs walls with minimal gear to faux paint them (footprints are a problem).

It's going to be a new year soon, which means the time is right for an awesome new haircut. Unfortunately I have no idea what to go for because I can't decide what would look good on me. Is there anywhere online where I can upload a picture of myself and see it with a bunch of different barnets before I go to the hairdressers?

Could "teleology" be explained as a looking back on history and its events to ascertain how the culmination of these events only now appear to be inevitable?
I'm struggling with a clear understanding of the term. Could anyone help?

mozilla and opera arent working, and i dont know why.
explorer works fine(for explorer), but for any other browser all i get is a white page and a continuously loading thingy in the corner.
i have reset the machine a bunch of times, reset the modem, reinstalled mozilla, installed the latest opera, etc, but to no avail.

any ideas?
mozilla didnt have anything i found helpful. where might be a good place to point my monotab browser to find answers?

Char Aina

found the problems with the two browsers.
two different problems, just to be fun. opera was a firewall issue, and firefox's settings had been changed by an untrustorthy add on.
the drama may be over, but i think this was like one of those fights one might have with one's spouse after which nothing is ever quite the same.

i may never kick my computer, but i was damn close to shakin the shit outta her.

Dear Barbelith,
Through a series of annoying circumstances I've managed to spill soft drinks on the inside of my rucksack. It's a fairly hefty Edgehill wheelable rucksack, too large and solid to go into a washing-machine, and the fabric inside can't be removed. I want to clean it's so it's not sticky. Any hints or tips?

different things, depending on who and when.
the greeks thought that the constellation of virgo was the nubile virgin astraea, godess of justice, who fled from earth because of our mortal failings and crimes. libra is of course her scales.

is that the kind of thing you are looking for?

you might find this book of use.

I seem to remember reading about a medieval conception of the sky as an upturned bowl with little holes in it. God's light was shining on the other side of the bowl through the little holes.

I'm not sure where this comes from, who held it.

Yeah, I've heard that one, too - although it was the light of Heaven shining through the holes. I'll have a dig.

Here's a quick one: in the interest of weight loss, is it best to eat (a light meal) before or after working out?

Brunner
11:10 / 13.01.06
I'm no expert, but accepted wisdom (at least on the Runners World forums I look at) seems to be that one should not eat within 2 hours of working out and that the last meal should have been primarily carb based. Once you have finished your workout you need to replace some of the expended energy (but not all) with some protein to help repair the muscle damage caused by exercise. Ideally this should be within 1 hour of finishing exercise although it depends on intensity. Of course, weight loss only happens if calories consumed is less than calories expended through exercise.

And now I have a quick question: What is the easiest (and possibly cheapest?) way for me to experience internet radio on my hi-fi (that is, in my lounge where the hi-fi is and not in the room where my PC is)? I've seen various plug-in boxes involving "wi-fi" or "ethernet" connections but really don't know where to start. Perhaps its because I'm not sure how to go about getting wi-fi....

grant, etc. - I took a course a couple years ago called "The History of Science" but really is was the history of cosmology and astronomy. For every civilization we looked at, we also tried to imagine how they imagined the "universe" which almost always consisted of the Earth, the moon, and the sun and that's about it. If you're interested, I could type out a brife summary of my notes. (and for the record, i got an A in the course, so my notes are relatively accurate)

Back in the old days, when people looked up at the stars, what the fuck did they think they were?

In Egypt, and perhaps Sumer to name a few, they seemed to have formed the fairly accurate picture that these were other worlds. Worlds of the gods and places to head for after death maybe, but nevertheless real tangible places.

In more recent history the stars, on occasion, have been seen as a rather handy clock if the watch/calender hasn't been discovered in your stomping grounds. Christianity was rather effective in sorting out those silly ideas of other worlds and establishing the holes in a piece of black paper view
