All About Lily Chou Chou has an internet messageboard as a central feature of the (damn good) film.

Interestingly, some of the kids are friends on the board, but in real life are unknowingly enemies.

What, pray tell, is "pwn"?

As in: Later, he went to the farm of Einar, and totally pwned his ass.

I'm missing something deliciously hilarious here. I just know it.

Wikipedia's got a good article on the word pwn.

Some of the common variations include “own,” “puh-own,” “pun,” “pween,” or, most commonly, “poan,” as rhymed with the original “own.” It can also be pronounced phonetically, as “pwən.”

See, In My Mind it's pronounounced like the noise a small boy makes when imitating cowboy gunshots ricocheting from rocks in western movies, 'Pee-Yown!'

Thanks, Dr. A. You've helped to increase my enjoyment of the comic stylings of the 'lith by at least 5%.

I've been pronouncing it "pwin", but I think I may have to adopt your pronunciation, Quantam. It's a nice elaboration and gives the term some roots in the oooooold-school FPS's. Well done.

"Pwn" is one of those words that I have a definite way of saying in my head, but is effectively impossible for me to say out loud. Same with LOL, which doesn't sound right as either "el - oh - el", or "loll".

Does anyone know of any music festival or events in Eire (of any persuasion of music - new composers, traditional Irish music, great big symphony orchestras, U2, etc etc)? Or alternatively, does anyone know of a resource that would reveal such information?

A few days ago, i wrote in some thread about an acronym coined by Brazilian Gay activists, GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexuals, and Transgenders), and I've been noticing some people using it. Has it been in use before I wrote it and I'm deluding myself, or am I the proud introducer of a new term in Barbelith's (and the international comunity's, for tha matter)lexicon?

I'm asking because I just want to "gloat" (in the lack of a better word) with my gay friends

Southampton 'lithers

I have an online pal who is thinking of moving to Southampton, and has some questions about the place:

"southampton, housing-wise (rented) seems to be nice and cheap, and i wondered if
it's grimly dry for employment?

more specific questions if i may:

do you have a hunch of areas to avoid?
would they generally, down your way, accept people with smoking cats?
or are the flats about a bit posh and all agencies that say you need
to earn a fortune?
if i turned up with a grand, could i rent somewhere for me and the
little four pawed monster without saying yes i have an enormous income
guaranteed for the whole of the year?"

Any answers that I can pass on would be much appreciated.

Megatron - also, an acronym is a word which is formed from the initial letter from each of the successive parts of a phrase - eg Nato, Scuba, Laser and so on. Therefore LGBT is not an acronym.

paranoidwriter waves hello

A few weeks ago while drunkenly scanning the interweb, I stumbled across a form of graphics / calligraphy which played with the typography of any given word so that if you turned it upside down it would still read the same. There was even a web-site belonging to a guy who specialised in this form of graphic manipulation.

Does anyone know what this technique is called? It's driving me crazy trying to remember it.

(Note: there's a little voice in my head saying that I may even have originally heard of this technique via [e.g.] a link within Barbelith thread, so...)

I have corn, I have beans, and I am under the impression that there is some way of forming said corn and beans into some kind of veggie thing that can be put into a sandwich. As is, they'd fall out, wouldn't they. Any suggestions?

Put them in a blender? Use a hollow pitta and put them inside? Make a toasty?

Use melted cheese to stick corn and beans together. Or honey. Or hummus.

Or refry the beans and enrich with the corn.

Bon appetit!

Aha! I think melted cheese will do the trick. I don't have pita, but I do have small, round loaves of bread that could be hollowed.

Thanks folks!

In a recent thread, there was distaste expressed for the term "lady." Could someone explain the reaction to me, or point me to an appropriate thread? Are the class conotations to the word causing offence?

Spaniel

I think it's that lady simply isn't a neutral gender term (if such a thing can be said to exist). IMO, lady has victorian connotations and smacks of a rather unhealthily precious (read: sexist) attitude to women.

Olulabelle
22:11 / 11.02.06
Yes I think part of the dictionary.com definition suggests why some people might object to the use of the word lady. There's quite a lot but here's a select few bits:

la·dy ( P ) Pronunciation Key (ld)
n. pl. la·dies
A well-mannered and considerate woman with high standards of proper behavior.

A woman regarded as proper and virtuous.
A well-behaved young girl.
A woman who is the head of a household.
A woman, especially when spoken of or to in a polite way.

High standards of proper behaviour according to whom?
By that definition a lady probably wouldn't get drunk, or wear her pyjama bottoms to the corner shop on a sunday morning.

It's just a very old-fashioned word.
