The Sounds tab in that window and modify the close windows sound there.

But back to Natasha Lyonne, really what's up with her? Anyone know?

In XP: Start Button>Control panel>Sounds & Audio>Sounds tab

Find the "Start Windows" entry in the program events section, and either select [None]from the drop down box or browse to a new sound file of your choice.

Sorry Shrug, I didn't refresh the page between reading the query and writing my answer about 15 minutes later.

Eh? Your explanation was more concise anyway.

Thanks. I didn't want to give the impression I was duplicating your answer to the question; I just hadn't seen it.

Tell me, my English brethren: Why do you mix tobacco in with your marijuana? Why not just have a cigarette after the spliff?

Because commercial weed in the UK is sometimes quite awful and the tobacco tends to lessen the feeling your smoking something dipped in bleach.

Also a lot of people in the UK smoke solid so you need something to stop you getting lots of little burns on your hands/clothing.

*Or so I've heard*

I see. Thank you.

Come again?

I always assumed it was because of the solids (hash) thing. 'Twas all you could buy when I was a lad.*

*If you had all the extensive drug dealing connections of a 15 year old boy in Ilford.

Truth is, we say we add tobacco to facilitate smooth and even burning, but really tis because we are mean.

I just found a large slab of steak in my freezer. It's been there, as far as I know, since mid- to late October of 2005 (the 25th is the 'use or freeze by' date anyway). Freezer's been on the entire time. Is it still safe to eat? Seems like it would be but 2 months is a long time. Should I avoid it altogether? Cook it, feed some to my roommate, and wait a few hours to see what happens? I'm really hungry and there's not much food in the house. Help!

And by 2 months I obviously mean 3. See? I'm weak with hunger here! My mind is clouded!

Jack Vincennes
21:21 / 24.01.06
I think it'll be fine, I've eaten stuff of at least that vintage.

Important disclaimer: the year I lived by the 'would my grandparents have eaten this in the days before use-by dates?' rule I got food poisoning twice.

P. Horus Rhacoid
21:35 / 24.01.06
Thanks, Vincennes. Given that and the lack of people rushing towards me screaming 'nooooooooo! you foooool!' or something similar, I'm gonna risk it. 2 cases of food poisoning in a year ain't bad, I'd say the odds are in my favor...

what's a good place to get travel insurance?
three months, decent cover, mondo cheapo.
oh, and for australia and thailand, with flights that stop on the way but not for longer than a few hours.

i have found some, but i would appreciate a headsup on your favourite.

I always go with Columbus Direct. They're pretty cheap I reckon, and I know a guy who got ill in America, had to see a doctor, stay in a hotel for longer and postpone his return flight and they paid for it all. It's always good to know that an insurance company has no probs with paying out.

I have a question about the weather:

When they say that the temperature is 8 but with wind chill it will feel like 3, why isn't 3 the real temperature? If it feels like 3 then it's 3, isn't it? WHat are they measuring if not how cold it feels? WHy isn't the wind chill factor part of the weather that they're measuring? It's like saying that the weather today will be dry, although with the rain factor it will feel like a downpour. Am I missing something?

wind chill robs you of the warmth you create.
a thermometer creates no warmth to lose.
oh, and thanks for the tip. i'll pass it on to my brother and hopefully it will sort him out.

I think that’s it. People are interested in the temperature for reasons other than how chilly it will make them feel. For example water won’t freeze if the actual temperature is above freezing, even if the wind-chill factor makes it feel (to human skin) as if it’s fallen below.

Didn’t someone here once tell a story about how hir local newsagent would point a fan at the confectionary counter on hot summers days, to stop the chocolate from melting?
I loved that.

(When I worked in a shop we had chocolate melting all summer long, it was horrid, but the manager had something against putting bars of chocolate in the fridges. Or maybe he just didn't like chocolate. But aaaaanywayyy....)

Does anyone know what "pozdrowienia" means (Polish). I just received a very strange email from a Polish guy I met at a party and that was the only word in it. Very confused. Think it might be an insult!!

"pozdrowienia" apparently means "greetings".

So you know in the top corner of the window where Barbelith has this thing:
Image hosting by Photobucket

How does one do that? I'm making a website and can't figure that bit out, and I want to use my spiffy logo as much as possible.

Over in the wallpaper thread people have put up actual pictures of their whole desktop, icons and all, and, well, how do you do that?

Best guess? By using alt+prt scr (if using Windows) or prt scr to capture either the window or the full screen image, and then pasting into an image application like Paint. If you have a mac, there's an image capture utility in your Utilities folder, at least on Tiger.

That's very cool.

It makes me realise how many buttons on my keyboard I just never use (mainly because I don't know what they do).

Poor buttons.

Charrellz: So you know in the top corner of the window where Barbelith has this thing...

Tis called a favicon and searching for it on Google will throw up a load of links. However, the short answer is, create an image (jpeg, bmp, png whatever) that is 16 pixels square, download for free highly useful programme Irfanview, open your image in that and resave it as favicon.ico and then ftp it to the top directory of your website.

What do you need to renew road tax? I've never done it before and my SO has asked me to do it so it's valid for Feb. Do you need insurance docs? Or just turn up at the post office and buy one?
