Can anyone confirm that Anna is okay? I saw her listed on the Roll-Call list as 'already checked in in the other thread' but scanning through here I couldn't see her.

Damn right. Respect from the north.

To be honest, I think only the most stupid of people will use this as an excuse to attack Muslims.

Most people in London just want a quiet life and go about their business - I can't see this seriously disrupting the status quo.

I can't stop thinking about this whole thing. What a bunch of cunts.

I've spoken to Anna by text messages today and she's fine...but not online herself.

I guess "paralysing the transport network" isn't the threat they thought it might be... TfL do it all the time.

Yeah, I managed to get a couple of text messages from Anna before the phones went fucked- I don't think she's got net access at the moment.

Speaking of which- mine's been "crashing" a few times today... not quite sure how network problems could affect the actual performance of the machine itself, but now you come to mention it...

It happens sometimes when phones search for network and can't find it... normally it just wears the battery down, but perhaps an intermittant (sp) signal over long periods of time could put the hardware on the blink.

Thanks for the pub rumour, Copey. I’m a bit worried that I’m not going to be able to get home. If areas around Leicester Square have been closed off, I’m in danger of having to withdraw my offer and take up someone else’s.
If anyone in Leicester Sq / Covent Garden (Gypsy?) knows the score about what streets are closed, it would be much appreciated? Is St. Martin’s Lane open?

You want surreal? Queen have released a statement. The band, not the Monarch.

”Further to the explosions in London this morning. We are currently speaking to the Queen camp in regards to the show in Hyde Park tomorrow. At present the Queen camp are being advised as to what they should do. The Queen press office is getting flooded with calls. Please do not call as we do not have any further information. We will keep you updated as soon we know anything.”

Several other gigs cancelled too. Obviously, the most important newss at a time like this....

"Just returned from lunch- all the pubs in soho have been asked to shut by the police- they don't want lots of people drinking all day in central london. CX road is apparently shut- no source just a bloke in the pub."

There's something terribly British about going to the pub during a terrorist situation. Deeply impressed with Londoners in general at the moment.

London is hard as fuck.

Indeed. I was in Chicago for 9-11 and the vibe was mass hysteria. Here the vibe seems to be, "Oy! Fuck off!" Actually the very first report I heard of this whole thing this morning was a bunch of City types who were clearly just annoyed they couldn't get to their meetings and that they didn't get any info from the driver. "Happens all the time, innit?" One of them said as the rolled their eyes.

Just took a walk round central London, everything seems to be cool with random stores shut.

I keep wishing the guys on BBC 24 would talk about "removing the head and destroying the brain," though...

Ah the British pub: first place of recourse, last line of defence.

Apparently one of the people trapped in the underground used his brolly to break free of the train. Again very British.

BBC now saying 33 fatalities... also VERY UNCONFIRMED (so don't put TOO much store in this) a friend has just told me she was told by someone working at RLH that it was in the 80s. Hopefully just the traditional old FOAF story...

Buses services into Zone 1/DLR resuming, will take long time to get back to usual service, but they are running now.

I really think this attitude is all "thanks" to the IRA attacks of the 70s/80s. There are no bins on the tube or in the City because back in the day bombings were pretty much a constant threat, even out of London (e.g. the Guildford pub bombings) and you just ... get used to it.

Plus the tube has "unclaimed object" scares and bomb alerts all the time. It's actually quite unusual (thank God) that any turn out to be justified, so people get used to treating them as a minor annoyance and I guess that as long as you know you and your loved ones are OK, that approach takes a while to wear off.

PA say 33 on the tube, no word on the buses.

For those of you heading out to east london I've just heard that the Docklands Light Railway will be coming back on line shortly (within the next hour I believe). Not a huge help but it's something.

Sorce: transport press confrence on BBC1

Possibly the lack of surprise is due to the fact that everyone's been expecting something like this since that smarmy cunt in Dowing Street went into an illegal war that no in the country wanted.

I know I'm late, but my sympathy and good thoughts with everyone affected, and my very great respect to the way Londoners, 'lithers especially, seem to be handling this. Stay well, everyone.

Buses are constantly going past here (south from Tottenham through Hackney) so if anyone's trying to get north or east Hackney could be a good bet for a diversion...

From Guardian Newsblog

1513 Respect MP George Galloway says: "We argued, as did the security services in this country, that the attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq would increase the threat of terrorist attack in Britain. Tragically Londoners have now paid the price of the Government ignoring such warnings."

1503 That news conference has been delayed. But we are hearing that Victoria, Euston and Paddington stations have re-opened this afternoon. St Pancras and Liverpool Street could also reopen soon. The only station likely to remain shut before tonight's rush-hour is the non-suburban (ie - Intercity) bit of King's Cross. The tube, of course, remains completely closed.

1500 We're expecting a news conference on today's events to begin shortly. We'll have live coverage here.

1424 Suddenly, the terrible scale of today's attack becomes clear. Ambulance sources, reported on Sky, suggest 23 people have been killed at King's Cross, nine at Edgware road, seven at Aldgate, two at Russell Square. There are hundreds - possibly more than a thousand - injured. We're trying to verify the numbers.

More from the Grauniad (link in my last post):

1545 In the press conference, we learn a little more about the initial confusion that gripped the city earlier today. Tube boss Tim O'Toole says the sudden succession of blasts caused the earlier "power surge" rumours - the tube control room thought that was the only thing that could cause such a coordinated set of failures across the network. In fact, the tube's power supply is intact - they could run a full service now, although that's not likely to happen for some time yet. He also says he's enormously proud of his staff, who "did a difficult job and did it well".

The Guardian site is suggesting someone was trying for a repeat of the Madrid bombings, they have noted that this kind of attack can easily be followed up with another wave of bombs to catch the emergency services and rescue teams.

Take uber-care when travelling where-ever you're going tonight London 'Lithers. Even after the all clear's been given.

I know you're all intelligent people, and that was a really obvious statement, but I feel better for saying it.

It's been surreal to sit in my lab out here in Surrey and watch this unfold on the net.

I'm heading home from work now so I'll see you all tomorrow, safe and sound. Thanks to all who've posted information and links.
