Hey Stoat, landlines not working much either. So a more comprehensive rolodex wouldn't have done you many favours.

Rough Blair transcript (insert your own pauses):

It’s fairly clear that there have been a series of terrorist attacks in London. There have obviously been casualties. Our thoughts with families.

My intention to leave the G8 and go to London to receive a report and then return to G8 this evening.

G8 continuing in my absence. Continue to discuss the issues we were going to discuss.

Each of the leaders have experience of this kind of shnizzle and we are going to share later.

Particularly barbaric that this has happened on a day when meeting to help problems in Africa and long term environmental problems.

Reasonably clear it is designed to coincide with the opening of the G8

Time to talk later about this. It’s important however that those engaged in terrorism realise that our determination to defend our values and way of life is greater than their determination to cause death and destruction in a desire to…

Whatever they do, they will never succeed in destroying what we and other countries hold dear in this country and other civilised nations in the world.

Does anyone know the latest on the locations of the 6 (or 7) explosions? I'm hearing that there was one at Leicester Square. Can anyone confirm / deny?

Bosun!

Eeek, bomb scares on Brighton station, more of an issue for me, I'm afraid. My office is on Lewes Station, 4 stops down and the next major station on the route towards Eastbourne.

The staff here are absolutely bewildered, unsure what's going on and have no real idea what to tell people.

Glad everyone's okay.

Nothing from leicester Square on the BBC as far as I can tell. Aldgate, Edjware Road, Kins X, Liverpool St., Russel Square, Moorgate are what I've got at the moment.

And Tavistock Square.

This is so fucked. One of the women in my class hasn't turned up today. We are hoping she just got turned back and couldn't get the tube in. Fuck...

No confirmation of an explosion at Leciester Square.

However, the Ambulance spokesman said they'd been called to:

Aldgate
Moorgate
Livepool Street
Russell Square
Kings Cross
Edgware Road (iirc)
Leciester Square

Sky reporter has described watching "body after body" coming out of Russell Square tube. I'm warranting there are a lot of people, alive or dead, still underground; Russell Sq and Kings Cross have fairly extensive underground rescue operations going on. Doctors are "operating on the platform" at Russell Square.

It's quite scary being in central London at the moment... We've been told to avoid using any telephones to try and keep the lines free as much as possible, although the networks do seem to be coming back into action.

I have an almost uncontrollable urge to run out of the office and just head for home, but we're all being good and following police instruction and staying where we are for the time being. Glad I've got lots of tea and biscuits.

I'm about to go and look at the front of Brighton station to confirm or deny the 'bomb'. Back in about a half hour with eyewitness reports, but THERE WAS NO LOUD BANG so I'm not too worried yet.

Couple of the older people in the lab were remembering some of the IRA attacks. Is there any chance this could be linked to groups other than Uncle Al? It's pretty unlikely I admit, but still.

Glad to hear everyone's okay so far.

That may have been a controlled detonation of a suspect but innocent device.

Coventry bus station and half of the ring road have been closed down due to a "suspicious package" in the station.

News as it develops.

Fuck, sorry, panic.
There was a controlled explosion but it appears to have been of an "Ordinary leather briefcase", acording to Southern FM.

The Leciester Square thing are you sure? I've not read anything about there being any incident and work just around the corner.

sorry to sound like an arsehole but can we see sources please, speculation doesn't help anyone...

Everything seems reasonably quiet around leicester square, which is where I am now. No explosions although the rumour mill is active about security alerts in either leicester square tube or the trocadero. I don't think there's too much in those rumours, or at least I'm hoping there's not...

I also have the huge urge to just get the fuck out of central london... but probably best to stay put for the time being.

No, that's fair enough. That way we can keep the rumours and speculation to a minimum.

Copey, is CX road cordoned off?

What the fuck!?

Just been woken up by my Dad asking me whether I'm still alive. I've put the TV news on ("Londoners urged to stay in their houses"), and catching up. Is that seven bombs?

Holy Fuck!

My prayers go out to anyone affected.

From Wikipedia updates section.

'12:50: Home Secretary Charles Clarke gives statement to the Commons. He said "This wouldn't have happned if we had ID cards."'

Hummm ok.

I missed most of what he said because of family phone calls so didn't see it personally.

I'm right here at CX station which is closed - apparently there are soldiers all around Covent Garden. Most businesses around here are sending staff home. Haven't heard anything about Leicester Square there.

Personally I give it up to Blair for addressing the nation rather than hiding out like Bush did. But yeah -bad delivery. Looked like he was forgetting what he wanted to say.

I don't deny the man's shocked to buggery. Problem is, he routinely employs that halting I'm-choked-with-sincerity delivery for every public speech, so it diminishes the impact and comes across as hammy. The whole "defending our way of life" thing verged on Bush-style tub-thumping, but I guess it could've been worse.
