Yes, seconding that*. I was wondering if this was the kind of thing where volunteers would be needed (although I'm guessing my blood's next to useless) cos I can walk to Liverpool Street in under an hour, but staying home seems the best option in light of all the other shit elsewhere.

*Lula's advice to angel, that is. Sorry, I've been on the phone so it's quite a while since I wrote this post.

PA have a police source claiming that talk of military on streets is due to confusion about VE day celebrations. Uh, yeah? Must find the text for you.

Should be easy enough to figure out. Is it a bunch of old geezers with flags or young military types.

Hey guys,

I don't start until 10 so the tubes where shut by the time i tried to travel, have been sitting here at home watching the news.

I'm switching between BBC News 24, Sky News and CCN and all have confirmed reports of 90 dead at Aldgate station.

Looking like 8 seperate incidents, two of those around Russell Square.

Gecko > Sorry for calling you loads, just wanted to check you were at work ok, which you are.

I'll update if anythign comes in.

No, no, I'm not intending to go anywhere far. I meant Kings College Hospital in South London, but as advised here and on telly I won't be going anywhere for a while.

I haven't given blood before, but I suspect it might be a good idea to take up the habit now.

For some reason, things like this bring out the nut cases, as there were many "prank" bomb threat calls immediately following the Oklahoma City bombing and the 9-11 attack.

If you were a terrorist, it would also be a very good way of increasing panic and confusion.

From a terrorist viewpoint, was this a good target or just a convenient one? I'm not familiar with London's landscape? Is it comparable to NYC's subways?

There are some very nasty inyries on the BBC from the Royal London Hospital. There are medics and fire workers all over the affected sites and it all looks very well organised. The reponce appears very well planned which is great news. I've still not heard any estimates on injuyies. Anyone know anything solid yet?

"Arab Sources" are indicating that it was Al Qaeda according to BBC.

People are still trapped at Kings Cross.

(Already told you Ariadne, just thought I'd update here!) I've just spoken to a friend who works on the Wharf, who says he's fine -so this probably is pure rumour mill stuf...

This kind of incident always causes a few people to behave like idiots. The conspiracy theories will be next.

And I hate to sound cynical, but I can just see Clarke using this horrible situation to gain support for ID card legislation.

Jack- they've just had one of these "terrorism expert" stuffed shirts on News 24, who pretty much summed it up (and said what I would have thought was fairly obvious to Londoners)- it's very easy to freeze London's transport system, and lock down the whole city (I mean, fuck, it damn near does it itself a lot of the time)- huge amounts of casualties were probably not the primary goal.

A ambulance spokesman was just on Sky News saying its too early to estimate casualties, but there are a number of people injured and that there are fatalities.

Blar also made a statement saying it was a terrorist attack and he did actually look quite shaken.

BBC also has reports of a website where Al Qaeda are claiming responsibility, whether that's true or not is another thing.

Blair on the radio saying it's terrorists and how could they do this on the day of the G8 who are trying to solve the world's problems. What a deluded bastard.

I dread to think the mileage Blair and Dubbya will get out of this.

Yes, clearly ID cards would've prevented all this.

No problem - I left my mobile at home, and it's got all my numbers on it so I haven't been able to check with anyone. Good to hear you're ok.

Blair -

"It is the will of all the leaders of the G8 that the meetings should continue in my absence.. we should discuss and reach the conclusions we were going to reach. each of the countries around the table have experienced terrorism, so they understand what the UK is going through. It is particularly barbaric that this has happened on a day where peole are meeting to help the problems of poverty in Africa, climate change and the environment. It is clear that is a terrorist attack linked to the opening of the G8. We will talk later about this, it's important however that those engaged in terrorism realise that our determination to defend our values and way of life is greater than their determination to cause death and destruction to innocent people in their desire to impose extremism on the world. It is our determination that it will not succeed, either in this country, or any other civilised country around the world."

Just add lots more pauses.

Rumour mill definitely in overdrive. Suggest ignoring everything that's not directly from a trusted source. Poor Mr Safeling is cordoned inside the scene of the bus monstrosity due to proximity to Tavistock Square. I want to go and rescue him.

I know this is just a TV cap, but fuck me that's a big explosion.
If the same devices were used in a confined space such as a tube, imagine the mess. 2 is a conservative estimate, I think.
