Personal information should be deleted if someone seeking that peace of mind requires that to be done.

Oh, I agree, to an extent. But I don't think it should be up to us to decide when that is, or to just choose to delete some older threads because... well, because... why?

People's attitudes are all different- there are some horribly embarrassing things on here that I wrote years ago, which I actually find it quite good to still have around, and in threads that could still work. Partly they're a salutory reminder, partly in certain moods I might actually find it quite uplifting to realise what a shit time I was having a long time back, so I can compare it with stuff now.

Not particularly clear, I guess. I think I'm saying again what I already said.

There may be something wrong with the barbequote thread:

When I look at it in the conversation thread list it says:
1510 REPLIES, LAST AT 04:10 13.02.06

But if I open the thread the last post is 22:35 / 12.02.06.

Is this some kind of software glitch? Or is it my PC, that´s not showing it properly?

That happens if somebody deletes the last post in the thread - the index doesn't roll back.

Aha. Thanks, I didn´t know that.

Could we have the other big videogames threads moved from out of Convo and into G&G, please?

Here's the original one.

And here's the last.

Chars.

Is the Dick Cheney thread too silly to go to the Switchboard?

Looking at the New Morrison interview thread, did we ever agree about getting rid of seperate threads and doing one big superthread for each writer? I was thinking of editing the title and summary to reflect this but can't remember (and find) any agreement about whether we were going to bother or not.

There was a New Grant Morrison Interviews thread in there for about half an hour, before it got turned to shit and moved to Conversation.

Some of my posts (yea, I know most of them) in the past were...ugly. So while I do need to sift through Convo to find that Profuse Apology Thread I was wondering if this could be gotten rid of? Kthnx

Not No, for any of your own postings you can request a deletion via the edit post button and then select delete post rather than modify.

Perhaps a Comics mod could add in something about Holy Terror! Batman vs al-Qaeda!11! to the title of this thread? If that’s where it’s all happening, then people still don’t seem to be seeing it. Try it in bold. Capitals, even. You can always make it more subtle later on.

i have started a thread in the conversation called radio fantasy. its supposed to be for folks to run wild with ideas for their ideal radio show or station, and as such seemed at first to be ideal in the conversation.

it might be worth waiting to see how folks feel monday morning, but i suddenly realised that it could be seen as fitting more accurately in the 'radio and music'.

what do you all think?
should i ask a music mod if they want it?
or should i just leave it and see if anyone moans about its current location?

Maybe leave it and see? It it gets really good we can shift it then.

I'm wondering if my Saving Dracula thread could have it's abstract edited?

At the moment it reads "Finding the art in the trash that was once art", which I rushed off, didn't like and then forgot about, but now it's back I dislike it even more. It sounds elitist, when really what I wanted to put across was the opposite: the idea of removing it from it's genre "ghetto".

Could we perhaps change it to "Re-assessing a highly influential book"? Or feel free to suggest your own.

Orginize? Is it an americanized spelling? Am I missing something?
Please amend.

This post in the Convo needs a link fixing.

This thread in Comics started vurry vurry ugly. The poster, Orqwith, who may or may not be a troll, posted something not worth talking about; but due to the effots of Papers, Jack Fear, and others, the thread is becoming something of a worthwhile discourse covering target markets, apprehension over crossovers and their readership's purchasing habits, and other such things that Comics covers.

I'd suggest a retooling of the subject title and abstract. Would that be in a moderator's capability, or should i contact this "Orqwith" directly?

Would anyone mind if I moved to lock all the introduction threads in Convo but the biggest one? And maybe provided links, in case people wanted to look at other people telling us that they really like the Invisibles? It wasn't a huge issue, but Penfold just bumped them all, and thus moved not-shit threads further down the forum...

Um. I don't think any offense was intended, but if someone could change the abstract to the Octavia Butler thread in Books and Lit to something that seems...I dunno...a little less shockingly insensitive, that would be cool.

Apparently a rather stupid poster has decided to change his screen name to Sensitive Rapist. I have asked him to change his name to something less offensive immediately or I start deleting his posts from Comics (where he primarily posts). I appreciate that it won't be possible to delete all 800 of his posts, and that doing so could damage some threads, but I'm game for removing any new output.

Ah, thanks to Weevil for reminding me that you can't change your name immediately after you've just put a change into effect.

I'm going to suggest he takes a hiatus. Probably best for him as if he carries on posting with that name he should be banned.

Yeah, that's not really on, is it? I know Tom can change usernames quickly, but either way, I don't really think anyone wants to see that popping up all over the place.

I've also PMed him about that. I realise that he can't change it back right now but unless he apologises, agrees to change ASAP, or indicates in some way that he realises it's not appropriate, I'm happy to OK deletes. Maybe give a grace period of 24 hours?

Is the phrase a reference to something I'm not getting? I mean, even if it is, it's still out of order, but as Jack says, why the fuck???

Jack, I haven't bothered entering into a dialogue. TBH I was too pissed off, and, frankly, if my assumptions about his motivations are on the money - that he's challenging thin-skinned Barbelith - I can't be fucked to get into it.
I think Chad's come the closest to actually engaging the guy. Glad someone has the patience.

That's why I kind of turned my head at first. I didn't know if I was missing some pop culture reference or something. Also didn't know if that person was male or female, and if female I thought she might be making fun of anti-feminist statements or something.

Whatever the motivation (or indeed gender of the poster), it's an inappropriate name and has a lot of potential for offense. Given that ve can't change it for at least four weeks without intervention, and that there are people who post on here who may have experienced sexual assault, it is at best an extremely insensitive thing to do.

Spaniel
10:33 / 06.03.06
Exactly.

Jack Denfeld
11:12 / 06.03.06
So we ask that he not post with this name until it can be changed, and if it takes the normal four weeks, he can use those four weeks to think about how the name wasn't appropriate to begin with. Sounds fair to me.

Shrug
11:22 / 06.03.06
How would one enforce this non-posting? There's always the possibility that people will continue to encounter any number of his 800 posts or 45 threads until the alotted time is up. Get Tom to change it immediately, I'd say.
Has anyone spoken with the poster? Why did he think this name to be appropriate?
