Why the sudden rush?
It doesn't seem sudden to me but, to be honest, the point is that we don't need Tom to verify that hate speech is hate speech.
Sometimes we have incidents where out of ignorance, stupidity or whatever someone makes an offensive remark which they then subsequently deny was offensive and take offence themselves at the suggestion that they could have been racist or homophobic or sexist or whatever. These people can exacerbate the situation in their desire to spare their egos. I tend to think that we should give these sorts of people another chance and see how they respond to being reminded of the guidelines here, and to let the emotion from the initial situation calm down. I can see the value of patience in this kind of case.
The situation with Hawksmoor is really nothing like that. He is being deliberately offensive and demonstrates complete disregard for the repeated objections that have been made to him, including reference to board policy. The discussions about whether this is an elaborate joke or whether it is our famous troll seem irrelevant to me. There can't be any doubt that he will be banned and I have no problem in using those tools we do have right now. |
