True enough, Haus. And, no, going by the number of people who put you on ignore wouldn't be the best way to gauge, necessarily, but if you post something you're already concerned about and overnight sixty ignores come through...

Just wondering what the ratio of real asshole: misunderstanding/bad-step is, I suppose. I just noted in a book review the other day, someone making a connection with 'pathetic' the the character's name, 'Black' and when I had a chance to question them on it, they seemed to really be stunned and confused at the racial connotation. Or the old, it's okeh to make fun of X because they've been made fun of forever, and anyway, there aren't any anymore. Ignorance and assholity aren't necessarily hand in hand, even when they're a bit perpetual. It's assholity when someone keeps it up past multiple warnings/suggestions of 'you're annoying us' and 'you're being a bigoted ass and inflamatory as hell', except when its not.

Well, absolutely. But I think we do that, don't we? Organically, less and less of the benefit of the doubt is assigned to what somebody says.

Incidentally, the "Mordant's personal problems in the Temple" thread is confusing because quotes are not bolded at the front end. It straightens out pretty quickly.

Could a mod please visit the Heroes thread...
...because I feel a bit like I'm the only one currently posting who doesn't see why "bitch" might be a problematic word.

Hasn't that been taken care of in-thread? The problematicalness has been raised and acknowledged, hasn't it?

(Should be worth pointing out that Tom Coates commented on that, too, and he runs the joint. From a distance. Like many mods on a high tower.)

Um, I find the idea that anyone is going to take Tom's comments in that thread as having some kind of authority (beyond that which any of us have when we post here) pretty worrying, to be honest. I don't think he aspires to be read like that either.

Well, at the very least, he's like a mod for the Forum, since he can propose and approve edits.

It's more than I can do for that forum....

(Oh, and if it's unclear, I was using "high tower" as a figure for distance more than authority. Like far overhead, from where not much can be done. Thinking of a park ranger/fire spotter more than a prince.)

I think it might be a bit less of an issue if buttergun spent less time calling the imaginary ladies in the box words that nursey would not appreciate.

Last time I looked, only I and Boboss had done those things. I don't think Tom's comments took care of it, no.

I have not been there because I ahve not seen some episodes yet. But had I been there I would have commented.

Can someone Musical please chage the abstract for this thread as Quantum has requested in thread? It's a thread abstract referring to Temple things, but the Music mods don't want it moved to Temple because then only Temple people would post in it. Fine, but if it's staying in Music we ought to ditch the hypersigils from the abstract, make it a bit more concrete and less Templey.

MW, I think you did a very good job of articulating the whys and wherefores of BGs wrongness - no-one's come back at you.

Those threads are strange, it's like a bunch of the regular posters never look at the rest of board.

Thanks Boboss (and Olulabelle)~ that's what I found frustrating and a bit wearying too. It's not so much someone thoughtlessly using the word "bitch" and then saying "sorry, my bad, that was inappropriate". It's people sincerely asking questions like "hang on, why is 'dick' any different from 'bitch'?" as if they've only just thought of it and no issue of cultural power could cross their mind.

The idea that we try not to use certain words because some people are sensitive about them (which is the way I think that discussion concluded) isn't the answer, to my mind.

Obviously I left it for the sake of threadrot and because it was a bit fatiguing (and kinda thankless) but yes, I do feel like Comics can be a bit of a bubble separate from the ethos of Barbelith as a whole.

Film not Comics, and specifically the Heroes and Lost threads. I think Comics has a fair few regular posters who at least try to keep on top of that stuff.

I know exactly what you mean about it being wearying and threadrotty. I experienced exactly the same thing when I came back at BG in the section of the Lost thread that Haus has linked to. I'm terribly glad you're around actually, as at least now I know that someone other than myself and Triplets will be arsed to draw attention to hate-speech in those threads*.

*I'm glad you're around for other reasons to!

Hey dude, if I'm participating in a current conversation I'll jump in as well. I'll be arsed as hell.

Sorry, Tsuga. I suppose my comments just reflect how alone I've felt in the past when these issues have come up within the threads in question.

What's the deal with the abstract for the music thread I mentioned, which Quantum tried to change in-thread? The abstract hasn't been changed, but if it's being kept no-one's explaining why, either. Currently the abstract is an abstract for a Temple thread. If that's the abstract and that's what is being discussed then we should move it. If it's not what's being discussed and the thread is staying in Music, then we should change the abstract.

It has been changed - the request I saw and agreed was to add the bit about music and synchronicity, but kept the stuff about grimoires and hypers1g1ls as well.

Can the other Lab moderators please lock and/or delete the Transhuman Technologies thread? It is causing offence and I don't want a thread I started to be doing that.

13:38 / 11.05.07
No, no, no. alas has responded to what ze sees as various problems with what has been said in the thread. It doesn't mean that the thread should be deleted and locked, on the contrary, isn't this the point at which the thread gets interesting?

Fuck yeah! Keep it rolling! I'll post in the Pager thread to see if we can get more Headshoppy types in - there's a most fertile borderline HS/Lab debate waiting in the wings here. Be back in the main thread asap.

Having just read through it, I gotta weigh in and say there's absolutely no reason to lock or delete it. As Fly says, alas has merely taken issue with some things in it. Which is part of- possible the most important part of- debate, surely?

Agreed. Science without an ethical outlook can be a dangerous thing, but avoiding the discussion of potentially problematic developments doesn't make it any safer - quite the opposite in fact.

I'm off to read the links!

Fair enough. I was a bit on edge yesterday, and might have over-reacted to the suggestion that the thread was excluding female and non-white posters due to the topics being discussed.

Someone want to move the "Blair Saves Civilization" thread from Switchboard to Convo? I think it'll be a lot more fun there. There doesn't seem to be much to analyze, for one thing. I can be wrong, too.

Invisible mod request in either Convo, Switchboard or G&G- how does one deal with these again? I THINK I put in a fake mod request to at least get somebody into the request queue, right?

Sorted now. Not sure if my queue-forcing was the right thing to do, but Randy put another request in for something anyway.

I swear I'm losing it. I posted a reply to the Doctor Who No Spoilers thread about an hour ago, but it's not there, and now I'm thinking I might have put it in the wrong thread.

Well, either that or I never posted it. I'm starting to think that I passed out and dreamed it, because while I can remember what it said down to the last full stop, I can't remember my fingers actually making the patterns on the keyboard.

If anybody sees it, give me a shout and I'll cut and paste into the correct thread. Once I've had a nice long rest.

You might not have posted in the wrong thread, it might have just disappeared because that also happened to me recently. I posted a reply to a thread and the next day it was just...not there. It was so weird, I knew exactly what I'd written, I know I posted it but the next day there was no sign of it at all.

Done, although I liked mine, which was too late to get in:

A new topic for this thread is pending.
The next one may be less offending.
But don't let that stop you from joining the jollity,
talking of science refuting equality.

Speaking of science...

I just posted what was meant to be a PM in the transhuman tech thread. I've requested a delete, would lab mods please be able to action it asap (ideally without reading the text)?
