Sorry, I wasn't really complaining. As I already explained in the thread, Ganesh had left and Xoc hadn't posted anything (that I saw) in the 28 days it took for his name to change to go away. I wondered if the two things were linked insofar as Xoc might not be wanting to potentially face all the questions about Ganesh and thought if they were that whole plan of Xoc's had just been scuppered.

Should the invisibles on ebay thread in Comics really be encouraged by people replying to it? Is it best to lock it and watch it drop?

Well the rule of thumb for such things has been to be more accepting of plugging of sales and such from established members who have contributed to barbelith over the years and Boy in the Suitcase certainly fits into that category...

Good question. I have a lot of time for Boy in a Suitcase generally, and the Gen Hex/Ultraculture stuff has, actually, been one of the more successful collaborative barbefforts, in some ways at least. So, my thinking was that now he has plugged the sale, we could turn the thread into a broader discussion of the collector market and the collector's impulse - basically, what sort of dog crack you need to be on to pay $75 for a recent, collected-in-trade comic, especially one considered to be inferior to the collected-in-trade version.

Have suggested such in-thread.

However, it has been pointed out that we've already got 2 threads on comics collecting on the front page.

Didn't realise this debate was going on here also, and I hope I haven't offended anyone with my suggestion that the thread in question be destroyed. Knee-jerk posting is to blame.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

In spite of the Boy's long-standing engagement with the board, I'd probably more inclined to ask him to copy the relevant info to one of those threads - or the comic book trading thread which has reared its face again - and then nuke the thing. It's fine to have those bits of collecting things around, but I'd rather keep them in one place rather than letting them hover like indecent mosquitoes, one-a-thread.

It's a curious predilection showing itself in the Comics recently.

7-6 years - Threadrot and pointless posting allowed
4-6 years - as above, but limited to 3 threads a month
2-4 years - occasional threadrot acceptable
6 months - 2 years - acceptable only on occasion and with the understanding that poster must be drunk
less than six months - nice try, newbie! ?

I'm with papers - longevity aside, the thread isn't adding anything new to the forum, isn't even trying to pretend - there are several other threads that could have been resurected for the post, and that particular corner of the board is becoming a little bit over run in this area.

Would someone like to explain why that thread in Comics isn't locked (after I moved to lock it)? I'm not being combative, just genuinely curious.

Yes and well done, but siring and raising them is a time consuming process and Bobossino isn't going to be able to do it all on his own.

Heh, I didn't realise it was for real at first. I thought it was like a "Hey look at this goofy Morrison auction on ebay, hahaha!" and then we'd all make with the funny.

Oh, and can someone tell Tom I wanna be a comic mod. I'm well versed in DC and Marvel, and am also a professional comic drawer and writist.

I also keep switchboard clean.

What to do about this thread? I think the discussion about the 'humour' of the song/video is about the only interesting thing worth saying about it, but it pretty quickly turns into Haus explaining just why John the Exploding Boy is so irritating, and John going "lalalalala not listening!" Conversation?

Feverfew

My gut reaction is 'nuke it from or...'

No, wait. crosswired.

I'm thinking that thread could - and should - be a discussion of how comedy based around disability relates to musical expression via comic relief, and whether 'comedy' songs should be subject to so much critical thinking as other music (I think they should, but that's just me.)

Could. Should. Would.

In which case, maybe John is right, and we do need a "behaviours which turn Barbelith into shit" thread in the Policy. Although since one of these behaviours is "never listening to other people", the profit in doing that may be questionable. However, sometimes you're a seminar group, sometimes a pupil, sometimes a lesson, as I find myself saying a lot.

I've seen you and John's latest interactions in the thread, and I'm now more in favour of locking it and springing up new threads in it's place - not because I disagree with the viewpoints being raised, but because I think it's diverted sufficiently away from topic/content to ever be returned.

On the subject of new threads, maybe three, to wit:

I) Does music have the same boundaries of taste as other media (in the wake of the utilisation of content discussed);

II) Spinning it off into a thread re: boundaries and comfort zones of comedy in FT&T, if one doesn't already exist, and

III) Your aforementioned 'behaviours that turn Barbelith to Shit' thread, while likely to elicit a good deal of confrontation and opinions, would seem to be a valuable one. Do you think it would be stirring the pot, or oil on troubled waters?

Fair enough! But do you think the thread idea itself is sound, or is it likely to cause more ructions than it solves?

I just made a new thread in the wrong forum. Can mods please move "How Do I Worship Thee" from gathering to creation?

Sorry for being pants.

There was a thread that Celane, I think, started, the purpose of which could be viewed variously as an extension of the FAQ, a Barbelith 101 thread, or a holding place for things you might want to cut and paste when somebody engages in a type of annoying behavior or argumentation that's been seen a million times. Could that thread be bumped, perhaps? There are the specifics of the behavior in seen in the Proclaimers thread, but the take-home message there is generalizable to other people's comments as well.

That Proclaimers thread, as Feverfew has pointed out, whatever its rights and wrongs is NOT A MUSIC THREAD. Not anymore. Move it, lock it, fuck it or eat it, it's clearly not about music at all. Therefore it needs something done to it.

Bugger. It's Friday night, isn't it? All the Music mods are out watching bands and stuff.

I came within seconds of locking it at work today.

Will propose to do so now.

In possibly unrelated news, any other mods have an impossible request in their queue? One with no action, and no "agree/disagree/skip" links?

The thread could be moved, possibly, but I'm not sure if discussion of the 'Comic Relief' single should be shut down altogether. Any more than a lot of the other stuff that routinely gets by on on Barbelith should be - Personally, I find a lot of the material to do with cuddly small animals intensely upsetting, but I don't complain.

If threads are going to be locked, though, rather than moved, because a couple of people find them dispiriting, then it seems like the possibly inevitable seeds of Barbelith's destruction are being sown.

To be honest, I'd say moving is the better option, because it's not even vaguely related to music anymore, and hasn't been for quite some time.

I do. I had it last night too. I can deduce from this that it is from a forum which both you and I moderate in.

AFAIK the only way to get rid of such requests is for another request to come in from the same forum. If there are two then when you have done one the page automatically goes to the next, which avoids the issue of how to click an unclickable link. Then we just have to disagree it to make it go away.

I wondered where it had gone. Is there any chance of the sure and certain resurrection in conversation, or is it now doomed beyond repair and rescue?

Actually, no, scratch that previous comment - I get the feeling it's getting enough discussion in Barbannoy for now, somehow.
