Gosh, I was certainly trying to avoid any lingering homophobia feel there - is it representative of fear to think some gay men wear the leather trews? Or that they demarcate a gay man? Apparently, it is representative of a lack of knowledge (I have been to a gay bar once, actually, but did not conduct a straw poll on leisurewear) so... heterocentric, I'd take, I guess. Heterosexist, I'd need more definition.

yawn is ribbing me, we are pals.

i think heterosexist means what you are using heterocentric to mean.

Yeah, cool. I suppose I associate the wearing of chaps with outre, flamboyant guys; a personality type I suppose I've subconsciously overlapped with 'homosexual male' - which... I don't see anything phobic about it, really, but I should say I'm terribly sorry if I've caused any ill-feeling by posting that.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

It can be a little tricky to delineate what is and isn't offensive in some cases, so the general (heh) rule to try and avoid generalizations like that.

I have, by the way, been informed that lederhosen might have more of a presence in certain kink/fetish cultures, but not neccesarily or particularly in gay culture. And they're not always leather, either.

Could someone blank the spoilers out on this?

Char Aina
18:10 / 12.12.06
but the 'leder' part means leather, doesnt it?
non-leather ones would just be 'hosen', surely?

do you have a problem with the lederhosen conversation, or the spolier question?
i ask because you are already being an ass in one direction, and suggest you dont aim to spread yourself so thin.

Lederhosen. Suggesting you drop it before you grow tiresome.

Too late for that now.

the weight of the whole world on your wise and weary shoulders, i can imagine it must get to you.

please discuss your problem with respecting spoiler requests over here.

I'm quite happy to examine how, if and why I fucked up, because the roots of the assumption I've made are bothering me, but perhaps it'd be best done as tangential to the original, and already enormously popular thread. With contextual reference, etc.

If we really want.

Well, I assumed yawn is presumably doing that hail-fellow-well-met call-your-chum-a-whoopsy stuff. More rugby club than Barbelith, but I would be unsure how one would moderate it, before even getting onto whether one should. Christ alone knows where the lederhosen lead. More to the point, does this mean that die toten hosen are trousers made of _death_?

Char Aina
00:49 / 13.12.06
the band, i think, are the 'dead trousers', rather than the trousers of death.
i always assumed it was a leather trousers reference made macho.
y'know.
because they are all GRRRRRR and stuff.

but then i read up, and found out it's an idiomatic meaning. dead trousers apprently means something more like pointless or unexciting. lacking in pizazz.

Char Aina
00:51 / 13.12.06
i suspect it may refer to a chap being 'dead' in the trouser department.

Can someone remove the annoying line's space on the summary of the Sandbox games thread in G&G?

I just don't know how.

I can't see what you mean, Wolf - has this been fixed?

Meanwhile, I made the mistake of trying to treat who cares? like someone who is interested in talking about television in the Television forum. As a result, the Torchwood thread now has thread cancer. Could another moderator intervene and request that threadrot be moved to a relevant thread?

This is more a gage rather than an out and out request - the General Pinochet thread in Conversation has me feeling a bit uneasy, mainly the summary, 'LOL' - it's dropping down the forum anyway, but should threads about death avoid out and out celebrating or judging in the summary, and save that kind of opinioning for the thread itself?

ONLY NICE THINGS
08:15 / 15.12.06
Well, the thread summary is generally put together by the thread starter, so a degree of editorial doesn't seem unreasonable - any more than the title of a thread often expresses favourable or negative emotion. If you mean should we moderate on the grounds of taste, I'd say probably not, although it's reasonable to raise issues of taste in-thread. There's a thread in Policy on moderation on grounds of taste, however, if you want to take this one further.

I can't see what you mean, Wolf - has this been fixed?

I can still see it - there's the title, then the abstract, then a line's space before all the "number of posts" stuff. Having read the Barbannoy thread, though, it seems it's as likely to be my browser as anything else so worry not.

Can we change the title of this thread, please? The senator in question is Tim Johnson, not Thompson.

Spatula Clarke
17:43 / 15.12.06
Wolf> I've seen that before - it's something to do with the board sticking an extra line's worth of space in when the summary ends with a punctuation mark of some kind. It's not happening with that summary for me, but if it's still a problem for you, you might want to try shortening the summary a bit. Maybe take out the second comma in the first line (I think that one's grammatically incorrect anyway, but could well be wrong).

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Could a mod fix the title for this thread, please? The misspelling is bad enough but the weird connotation of the misspelling makes me double-take every time I look in the Headshop.

Kind of like the wit and wisdom of "divers Barbeloid" in the Barbequotes thread?

Huh. Is that one of those US/UK differences, or is diverse used as well? I always read that summary and think of putting on the scuba gear and plumbing the depths of divers threads. See, now that just seems odd to me. But thanks for setting me straight.
