Arghh. How do I do the HTMLy stuff that puts an Imageshack thumbnail into a barbelith thread, one that you can click on and be linked to the full-size image? I'm sure it's terribly simple, but I can’t seem to get it right.

you make the a href from the url of the big one, and the img src comes from the thumbnail.
picture tag goes inside link tag, et voila.

so.

A question about FLICKR

I notice that you can order things by 'interestingness'. Is that something that is judged by the magic fairies at flickr alone? Cos I haven't found any way to score photos for interestingness.

I think it's to do with clusters. If your photos have tags that are popular and stuff, they are more interesting. Doesn't seem to have that much to do with hits, but I guess they're keeping quiet so that people don't work out how to Flickrbomb.

There's an adjective used to describe studies or experiments that happen over a strech of time with samples taken at regular periods. Also used to describe documentaries of the Michael Apted, '7 Up' variety. It's torturing me. Anyone know the word I mean?

Was it somebody here who was asking about bodies staying preserved longer nowadays?

I've just heard from a friend at University of Texas Medical Branch (science writer -- they have an epidemiology unit there, and they're busy trying to figure what's going to happen next in New Orleans) who said that the formalin they use to embalm bodies actually hastens decomposition after the first week or so.

(BTW, if you're curious, they're expecting cholera moreso than any diseases that killed old New Orleans citizens getting liberated from coffins.)

If it wasn't someone here that was askin', then it was in the Lab Q&A threads, I think.

It's not in the zombie science thread that I can see.

I am moving house this weekend.

Where in London in the name of all that is holy can I get large, sturdy boxes or crates to shove my stuff in for free? I've tried the local Tesco, Sainsbury and Iceland (King's X/Islington area) - no joy.

Anyone got any ideas?

I've had success at my local corner shop before. You want to go somewhere that doesn't have a 'policy' on that sort of thing. Supermarkets probably fear litigation if one of their boxes is involved in a fine china breakage.

re: cardboard boxes - offlicenses etc. are good bet as boxes tend to be super strong. Sometimes if you explain your situation shops will agree to keep boxes for you after big deliveries if you can collect them quite quickly. Also, try putting a wanted post in freecycle and/or putting a few notes through neighbours letterboxes - there's bound to be someone living close who's recently moved and trying to get rid of boxes. Good luck

In the States, there's usually a particular day of the week supermarkets recycle boxes. If you cruise around behind the store the evening prior, you can sometimes see a huge brick of cardboard made of folded up/crushed boxes.

Sometimes, these boxes can be recovered and folded back into shape.

Not that useful, but you never know.

Not the most cost effective system i know but you can also buy Cardboard filing boxes folded up from most stationary shop- i these can be handy if you have the cash?

Allegedly supermarkets no longer keep boxes around due to fire regulations. Possibly another case of PC-gone-mad/evil-EU-regulations. Local greengrocers or corner shops are often a good source, especially if you are a regular.

Bookshops, especially at the end of the week, more so at the start of the month. This is a perfect time to call yer local Ottakar's and help them reduce their recycling bill.

Is there a P2P software out there anymore that won't put ads all over my computer? I already use bittorrent of course, but occasionally I'm looking for something small that you can't find on torrent networks. I used to use BearShare, but I don't know if I can find a version free of adware.

does anyone know a good source of 'resistance' images?
i'm making a flyer for a benefit night for those unfairly incarcerated after the recent g8 debacle.
i'm thinking specificaly of pictures of cops beating down portestors, civillians, passers by; anyone unarmed.
i have searched, and i have found a bunch, but i havent found any iconic enough to reduce to two colours.

i am aware that i might end up using a picture from somewhere else, but i would really like it if it was british riot cops, preferably that one form the front page of several ppers in which a policeman is ghetting ready for a baton charge, screaming like he means it.

link me!

cheers.

wembley, I use soulseek, and it doesn't seem to be putting ads on my computer. Ah, I've just checked their website and it says, "Soulseek(tm) is a unique ad-free, spyware free, and just plain free file sharing application."

Does anyone know of a good book about the advertising industry? Something like Liar's Poker would be ideal, but anything that's true-ish to life on how people on the creative side talk to each other, technical jargon, management structures, etc, would suit. Ta.

My sister's computer got very fucked up, so that she was unable to use it for anything, but she could still access the files on it by hooking another computer to it. I don't know the specifics, as I actually know very little about computers, and I really don't care to know more, unless I need to because of my own computer having problems. And my computer's not having problems. But, anyway, so my sister transferred an enormous amount of files onto my computer (around 30 GB, I think) and reinstalled her own operating system. She then moved her files back onto her computer, and deleted them from my computer. The problem is that when she was done doing this, I checked the available space on my hard disk, and there was 6 GB less than there was when she started. She tried to find ways to free up space, and now there are 4 GB less free space than when she started the massive file moving operation. I want my space back. Do any of you know why I have 4 GB of new garbage somewhere on my computer, and how to get rid of it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Probably temp files generated by the transfer. If you have a recent version of Windows, run disk cleanup. If thhat doesn't work, try a search for the file-ending .tmp and see how much it turns up,. You could as a last resort reformat and reinstall, but I wouldn't if I were you. In fact, I'd probably just leave it, unless you are desperate for space...

Does anyone know what the grading system for US degrees is? In the UK we have firsts, 2:1, 2:2 and thirds.

Is the grading the same state side or is there a A,B,C system – or a percentage system?
