I dunno about trains, Sav, but every time I get on a new double decker bus in London, it smells like Red Bull.

I fucking hate the smell of Red Bull.

Typing of trains...well, kind of... I was wondering if anyone could help me find a film I've been asked to look for? The only info I've got is that it's a Chinese film, set mainly on a train, and that it's a drama about the SARS outbreak. Unfortunately, my slowly improving research skills are leading me up too many garden paths, but I figured someone on Barbelith might have some expert knowledge of the Chinese film industry which might help. Anyone?

It's the prequel to "Snakes on a Plane", "SARS on a Train".

scariest error message ever

ok, so someone asked me to use my computer to put songs onto his Network Walkman (why would someone without a computer buy such a thing????) and I plugged the walkman into the USB thingy, and then forgot about it. Then a while later I put in the CD to install the software for the walkman, and then I shut down another program before installing, but when I shut down that program, I got a blue screen which I didn't get a chance to read, and then a black screen with the message "OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND". ahhhhhhhhhhhhh wtf. turned my computer on and off a few times, somehow forgetting that I still had that stupid walkman plugged into it, and kept getting that awful message. I tried to call my sister to wake her up and ask her what to do because I was on the verge of tears but she didn't answer. I then remembered the stupid walkman, unplugged it, tried turning my computer on, and it's back to normal. was the scariest error message ever because of the walkman being plugged in, or, um, what? sorry, I know this isn't really a thread for this, but there isn't a thread called "oh shit I thought my computer was toast for a minute there and now it's working just fine". and ya know if you got an error message that said "OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND" you'd be on here talking about it, too. I swear, you would be.

Sounds to me like it was trying to boot from the network walkman as if it were a floppy drive - you could adjust your BIOS settings, but it might be better just not to try to boot up with an external drive plugged in. To be on the safe side, I'd back up your important data now, however...

"it might be better just not to try to boot up with an external drive plugged in"

Yeah. I generally don't do that (although I generally don't even use things like this), and I totally forgot that I'd plugged the thing in. And I didn't plan on restarting my computer or something. All I did was close a program, and it did that awful stuff. Which wasn't awful, because it went away.

*huggles haus* thank you.

yeah, I'll back up my files. hehheh. when I got the scariest error message ever I immediately thought "oh no I've lost all my files!" which of course made me then think "um....do I have any important files?" The answer is "no". But I'll back them up.

*huggles haus again* hey haus I had a dream that you were in. I just thought of that because I have a dream diary on my computer, but the dream about you isn't in it yet, because I'm uberlazy, cuz the dream was 3 days ago or something like that. Anyway, all I remember about it was that you were making children's TV shows and putting subversive subliminal messages in them.

Always write down your dreams as quick as you can! I´ve been keeping my dream diary for about six years now, and it´s amazing how your dreams and your dream memory profit from you making the little effort of writing it down early after waking up.

And yes, write it on your PC. Handwriting after waking up may be unreadable, especially if you try reading it weeks, months, years later.

Cheers, Nightclub Dwight. I think that's the one. I spent hours yesterday trying to find as many SARS related Chinese films as possible, and'A SARS Journey'looked to be the likely candidate. Sorry, I should have posted to say I'd found something last night, but as my boss (I'm on trial at a new job) isn't here yet this morning, I'm still not absolutely sure. Much obliged anyway.

Sorry, stupid computer question coming up!

I'm leaving my current job at the end of this week. On my work PC I have many websites saved as favourites and was wondering whether there is a quick way I can save and reload these onto another PC, in bulk rather than individually?

It's probably really obvious but thanks in advance....

Find the favourites folder (should be obvious, if not do a search). Copy all files therein to floppy disk or CD. Transfer. Replace. Voila!

What's cilantro? I mean, is it a vegie/herb I don't know or is it what they call something familiar elsewhere a la eggplant/aubergine?

Oh, I know this one! Cilantro = coriander. Ibis said that in a recipe thread aaaages ago, and it got lodged in my head because it's such a pretty name.

Bed Head

Also (a google later) I think both words are for the same plant - Corriandrum Sativum - but cilantro might be used in a recipe to stipulate the leaves, with coriander being used to mean the seeds. So, yeah, the same thing but different.

thanks Mistoffelees. I'm trying to do that, although lately it's been really hard. It's hard to do anything right after waking up, except rolling over and trying to go back to sleep. I wish I'd written down my dreams right after I woke up this morning, because all I remember of that really long one was the part where the two women drove up in a convertible (car) full of water. It was like a hot tub on wheels. And they were wearing leapard print robes, with feather boas. I want to remember the bizarre ones, especially.

Flickr question:
I'm finding it impossible to upload photos and I just can't work out what I'm doing wrong. When I'm uploading it warns me that it might take a 'little while' but I've left a 50k picture uploading overnight before and it's still not got anywhere. Well, I got the top fifth of one pic up, but that's been my best result so far.
What am I doing wrong?

Oh cocks. I was hoping it would be something really elementary. I go to 'Upload Photos', browse for the jpeg on my hard drive, click public (or private, it doesn't seem to matter), hit upload and get the /photos_upload_process.gne page for the rest of my life.

*sulk*

I've got 2Mb ADSL, I've tried it on two different machines (PC and Mac)... I've never had any problems with this kind of thing before... *sigh*

What does PWNz0r3d mean?

Thank you.

pointless & uncalled for
13:45 / 12.10.05
PWNED means "owned" (following from a popular typo) and is similar to schooled, clocked, trumped and otherwise beaten in some form of competetive stake in a manner that would imply professional vs. rank amateur.

PWNzOR3D is likely to mean this but very much more so.

When confronted with l33t speaking muppets I like to use the phrase "you have insane capabilities and your mother is quite like to display pride in you as her progeny". It's that or "speak properly before I beat you with a five iron".

Is it possible to get root beer or sarsparilla anywhere in the UK? I think I've seen sarsparilla once since coming here, but not at any major grocery store. I'm a bit of a root beer snob, my variety of choice being various microbrews, and normally I won't touch Mug or Barqs, but I'd even settle for those if I have no alternative because root beer is my favorite beverage evar. Most breweries in the states seem to make their own root beer- do places in the UK do that (I'm guessing not since I haven't seen any)?

I don't know about things like day-to-day availability, but I do know that John Seymour, a British self-reliance/family farming/homebrewing guy includes recipes for root beer in one of his books. Therefore, I'd conclude some microbreweries or homebrewers somewhere in the UK make the stuff.

Google tells me commercial root beer is a precious commodity (someone raves about finding A&W), and that it's a "flavor that never caught on in Britain."

I believe the first root beers in the US were made from indigenous plants sassafrass and sarsparilla vine.

You might be better off hunting for birch beer or something, but I really don't know (more of a ginger beer fan myself, anyway).

Let me know how your search goes.

Mordant Carnival: Am I being extravagantly scratchy these days? Mostly in the Temple.

I don't think so, but I don't read everything in there.
