Few quick ones:

1) Who was Maggie Blake? As in “Maggie Blake’s Cause” a street off Shad Thames which leads to the river.
2) Who decided on 5 days work 2 days off in a week?
3) What is Billingsgate market building now used as?

I think the 5 days work, 2 days off pattern is based on the idea of resting on the sabbath. Bear in mind not everyone works that pattern.

It's a legacy of the industrial revolution, essentially. Before that, people laboured six days a week, theoretically, and Sunday was a day not of rest but of religious observance (in Christian countries, that is). However, seasonal work meant that what constituted actual labour varied from day to day. When industrialisation turned work into a constant process, labour movements started to campaign for an actual day of rest proper.

What sort of chap do we need to ask to fix our grill? An electrician?

Is it a gas grill or an electric one?

I'm so glad somebody else asked that...

What's wrong with the grill?

Generally, you can find listings for "appliance repair" that'll fix electric or gas. They might get a little confused by coal- or wood-burning.

I would've thought you asked your landlord about getting your grill fixed. Their lookout, innit?

It is an electric grill... and our landlady is as clueless as we are. I don't actually know what's wrong with it - it just went pfft one day.

Will try to find an appliance repairperson - thanks Grant.

Your landlady is responsible for all repairs to the fixed apppliances if the flat is furnished - if unfurnished it's a bit trickier.

Driving on the left side or driving on the right. Is there any specific advantage to one or the other?

if i get a runtime error that says "unterminated string constant", what should i look for to fix it?
where would one go to find out these things?

it happens while using explorer to look at an html document that i have offline.

okay...
so my research tells me that its a common problem, one that is often more a fault of the browser than the file.
thats cool, but isnt especially helpful.
i'm glad my code is up to code, but i want my work to work for all.

any ideas?

Evil Scientist - Left hand Right Hand origins etc is explained here - it's all to do with the sword hand and the whip hand apparently.

I have another question which admittedly should be in a word thread I just can't find the right one. I'm stuck for a word - fill in the blank... "Blame is a very negative BLANK" - what is it? Concept, notion? I'm thinking it should be on a par with emotion (as in "happiness is a good emotion" or some such). Any thoughts?

deeper into my code hell,i am now hard at work in the second circle; java script errors.
any idea where to go to find out what could be causing them?
it isnt my script, and there are about a million incidences to fix.
koders needs me to know what i want more than i do,and i am therefore lost.

its a pop up window script that opens a glossary page at an anchor, incidentally.

on blame;
i'd say response works, but i'd have written it "looking to blame" or "blaming" or something similar.

Behaviour, for the cod-psychological touch?

On Blame.

I know what you mean Randy - but finding a word that fits is not really the problem nor the syntax toksik... I didn't explain very well. I'm looking for an umbrella term which incorporates Blame - like emotion does for happiness, or colour does for green. I'm not sure such an overarching thing exists though.

Sorry Jub, I know what you're getting at, but I can't think of a solution. Maybe if you take Haus' suggestion ("behaviour") as your starting point and use Thesaurus, you might find something? Or maybe not, of course.

A while back I was talking to a guy at a party and he told me about a "what's that tune"-type of telephone service. i.e. you call the number from your mobile, play the tune, and someone/thing texts you the name of the artist, etc. (Oh, and he wasn't bullshitting: he even proved it was real by testing the service then and there)

So, does anybody know the number of this service? I ask because I write music and often (such as now) I like one of my songs so much I start to worry I may have ripped it off from somewhere (i.e. "There's no way that's mine"). I figure, therefore, that this would come in handy and stop me having to annoy my friends by testing their musical memory.

it's called shazam and its the middle numbers on your phone from the top down, 8520.

Char Aina
16:22 / 29.09.05
was it shazam?
i think it only works if the song is identical.
similar riffs with different drums wouldnt work, for example.

Quantum & Toksik: cheers comrades, sounds like the one. Toks, I really hope you're wrong. I'll test it (when I've got credit) by playing a bad version of a well-known standard and see how it copes, then report back.

try recording yourself playing something well known on a guitar and then seeing if that works.
i dont reckon it wouldunless you played it perfectly.

Quantum

It computer matches the sound profile, so it prob'ly wouldn't work. It's great for tagging rare songs or ones you can't remember the name of but it won't respond to drunken renditions or 'dum-de-dum' versions.
It does recognise rare B-sides and esoteric trance tunes though, it's fun to play with.

Has anyone else noticed that Virgin trains smell of wee? I don't mean "they are rubbish", cos as trains they're just fine. I mean literally - you get on the carriage and the first thing you notice is the smell of wee.

The first time I noticed it - about 6 months ago - I assumed it was just one of those things. But then I noticed the same smell on two separate occassions, months apart, on different journeys. My pal in Leeds reckons he's smelt it too.

Has anyone else spotted it, and if so, do you have any theories about what might be causing it? I reckon it's some new cleaning fluid they use on the seats.

The following sounds like a dating ad:

I'm looking for a celebrity. She's in her mid-40s, longish blonde hair, thin dark eyes, THICK chunky black glasses, may or may not have some kind of prominent beauty mole. She's smart and usually appears as a commentator on those 'I Love the 1970/80/90s' type shows. She might work in comedy or possibly writes a column somewhere. It's the glasses that stand out the most.
