>> I once said something along the lines of if someone did a story where "Jenny" was tall, thin, blonde, buxom, caucasian, etc. it wouldn't necessarily be included on the Jenny site, but could still be called Jenny, and may in fact become the predominant Jenny.
Awww, why wouldn't you list it on the site? Esp. since 80% of the Jennys drawn in the stories thus far have looked not necessarily Asian and at least half have been "thin" (although like I said earlier, 'thin' can mean many different sub-sizes under that umbrella term). I guess you meant if this theoretical Jenny was ALL of the not-very-Jenny traits you listed in one?
The 'review' process that Persephone proposes sounds good - like you said, pretty much only to make sure that no one's submitting a hate/Nazi propaganda Jenny story or something completely inappropriate or horribly executed.
>> That's the way the concept works. Jenny is controllable by no one. We can talk about how much we dislike certain characteristics or stories, but there isn't a damn thing we can do about it other than try to present our own version as strongly as possible.
To me, this is the bottom line. And like Moriarity points out, there are pros and cons to this, but the die is cast and I trust the results will be far more wonderful than not.
>> On a side note, I have plans to draw a Jenny without some of her signifiers in particular stories, including her goggles, scarf, jacket, etc. Heretic!
In the story I'm illustrating for Imp she's not wearing the scarf (or a jacket, for that matter) cause it's summer. I mentioned this earlier and I'm surprised no one's called me a heretic by now
Also, in Imp's story there's a shot of multiple universe Jennys where I draw practically every previously existing Jenny (plus a few of my own creation) in the exact (to the best of my ability) style as drawn by previous Jenny artists. It's a homage -- sort of like that bit in that crappy DC series THE KINGDOM where they show Hypertime and it's like shards of glass showing a million different shots of DC characters. I realized I could do it with cut & paste collage, but 1) I wanted to not mess with the actual artists' illustrations and 2) it was a far greater challenge for me to draw in everyone's styles, like John Cassaday did with the recent BATMAN/PLANETARY special (or the old SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL issue drawn by Jon Bodganove with the multiple versions of Batman popping up all over the place). So be forewarned! But it's just one shot of tiny snippets and that's it. |
