Poor Roth. I'm sorry you're not home. Hasn't Austrailia got less ozone than most of the world at this point? If I recall my "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" correctly?

Why don't you all swap subcultures for a day? Now that's something I'd like to see!

For some reason I'm being particularly crusty today- sitting at work in a filthy "Battle for the Trees" t-shirt from the Newbury Bypass protests and listening to Conflict...

I think the goth/racist thing has a lot to do with Death In June et al... - stoatie

Yeah. There is a disturbing undercurrent who really get off on the fascist imagery. Makes me sick. But stoatie, my man. My goth fetish is broad and tall, so if you feel a need to relive those days...

Anna: *Obviously* it won't *really* be "goth". Thats the spirit. Same songsheet and all that.

But I'm going to bed guys. Lecture in the morning...

I don't think I have a subculture. I don't know what I'd swap. Except my hat, and I really like my hat... ah well. I'm not even in the same time zone as most of you, so I guess it's moot, but if any of you goth out, I want before and after shots.

I wish I had a good reason for being awake right now, like say "I am doing important work vital to society and am receiving considerable pay for said work", but no. I just can't sleep.

Tch, and there's nothing on television.

rrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

SMASH!

Gah. Tired. Hungry. Bagels. Gah.

It's a bit grim, to be honest - a consultancy to see how urgently a pilonidal sinus has to be removed. When life becomes eXistenZ... again. Today will determine the level of seriousness.

Bagels. Cream cheese. Gah.

Hello, I have a severe headache because I've actually deigned to think about fashion and now I'm in search of an Ackroyd book on cross dressing. Ouch.

No mate, here I am too. And Stoatie should be along any moment though I can't say whether he'll be on here. I can, however, make an educated guess ... he will!

I quite like this whole skipping between work and Bareblith and other computer-type stuff like trying to buy Marvel Legends action figures online, which is the hardest goddamn thing I've tried to do in ages! Harder than pooing through piles. And that's bloody hard.

Can anyone suggest how I might get a Captain America? It's not a patriotism thing btw, I'm just a completist.

Ackroyd book on cross-dressing? Peter Ackroyd, or someone else?

I'm here. Working hard. Ouch.

Yup Peter Ackroyd... DRESSING UP - TRANSVESTISM AND DRAG: THE HISTORY OF AN OBSESSION. 1979. And does the library have it... oh no, couldn't trust a university library with a growing Culture department to actually stock this kind of material- could you?

I'm here. I'm making a chloropleth map to show... how rubbish the data I've been working with is, I think. Rothkoid - will answer yr PM in a bit, when less angst-ridden about talks etc. I think I'm going to be up most of the night with this presentation whatsit.

Oh god, may the force be with you Kit Kat. Remember, however scary it feels (and it usually feels very scary), you know more about it than your audience and you can bullshit any nasty questions with lines like, "Hmmm [frown]... I don't think you've quite understood what I meant" or just, "Hmm, I'll have to give that some thought. Thanks for that though." Don't let the bastards getcha down.

I can heartily recommend digging out T-Rex to aid angst. It's working for me today. This is just ludicrous stuff. I mean:

Wear a tall hat like a druid in the old days
Wear a tall hat and a tatooed gown
Ride a white swan like the people of the Beltane
Wear your hair long, babe you can't go wrong

The bit about crashing into a tree is omitted, I note. But y'know - finer stilton I've yet to find...

Thanks, matey. I plan to use the phrase 'That's a very rich comment' if anyone catches me out... it seems to get everyone off the hook (as well as making you sound like an absolute twart). Also I shall be foregrounding the fact that 'this is very much work in progress' - then they can't get me on the incomplete data/'not enough prep' front... arrgh...

Blimey, it's Campus night on Barbelith.

Virtual hugs/pints/fags/chocs* to all of you.

Anna: I found the British Library really helpful, if you can get to London, you don't need a note from your College, as I thought, if a book is hard to find. Just ring up, request it - give 'em a week to ten days to find it, and go along. You'll need some academic spiel if you want to take it away, however, and for a BA that could be tricky.

But if you're inter=librarying-it recommend you try Goldsmiths/University of London library = sure I got hold of a copy during my masters from somewhere...

Kat: Bill talks sense. You *will* get it done, and it's your presentation, your subject, your particular approach. You can if you need to, can't you(?) present on methodology, ie why it's been so difficult to get veriable data. What yr next steps would/will be etc?

*delete as applicable. or not.

oh bah. hugs all.

cleaning's suddenly seeming a much more appealing career.

from me to you, Kat, with love:

"That's an interesting approach, which I will certainly consider..."

"Could you expand a little on what you mean by that question"

"With limited time and resources, I was unfortunately unable to incorporate n into my methodology. I will however be exploring this as the project progresses. Thank you for the suggestion" (where n signifies someone else's bee in bonnet which you have no interest in, but which they will persist in bugging you about.)

Oh what jolly fun it all is. I am taking much comfort in the fact that though the seminar is stuffed with London experts, all of them are at least fifty years earlier than me - a great relief. However my supervisor has elected to show his confidence in me by booking himself in at the doctor's... not sure whether to be offended or relieved...
