I think so - it sounds like I will, anyway. It's all easily identifiable as whiffy purchases - all building tools, stuff that can be sold on, all bought on the same day from different online stores. I identified all the not-me transactions when I spoke to the bank a short while ago and they're apparently going to put them all onto the claim form they'll send me themselves, they're so obviously out of whack.

What's really odd is that one of the biggest purchases - £780 worth - was refunded back onto the card a couple of days later. I don't know if that indicates that the store realised that there was something up and cancelled the transaction (in which case, why not contact the bank or Visa themselves?). Horrible feeling it's going to make filling out the necessary forms even more complicated than it was inevitably going to be anyay.

I'd hope that the bank's fraud dept will take a proper look into it and nail the tosser responsible. Given that they're all purchases made online, there are going to be delivery addresses, so it shouldn't be all that difficult. And now that I've calmed down a bit, I realise that it's nearer £3K, which is hugely depressing as I was so chuffed with msyelf a couple of days ago for finally managing to build up *some* savings.

Liger> Not really, but I suspect it's not actually related to my own online shopping. I'm pretty much an online shopper exclusively nowadays, but only through a small number of trusted sites that I've been using for years. Left the buying of Christmas presents too late to trust the post with online stuff this year, though, so ended up buying a bunch of things through the debit card in high street shops. I'm thinking somebody in one of those has got the card number from their own banking records - it'd certainly tie in with the date that the card was then used by whoever.

On the plus side, the woman at the bank's call centre was extremely helpful and understanding, and did seem to be suggesting that the process of getting the money back into my account was pretty much a formality - "fill the forms in, send them back to us and you should see it back in there ten days afterwards". Remains to be seen whether or not that's how it plays out, mind.

Should do - similar thing happened to me, but when I had a mere £300 or so in my account, and I got it all back (and I had been stupid enough to use an ATM that even at the time I thought looked a bit dodgy...).

Yeah, that's how it's happened with the several times it's happened to me, and to people I know. I sucks being out of pocket for those 10 days though.

Sadly the banks generally write it off and tend not to catch the people responsible, or that's the impression that the banks gave me, even though they routinely report such thefts to the police.

remeber to check yer bank statements for random direct debits too - they have a nasty habit of appearing just by knowing your name, possibly address, sort code and account number. It's happened to me - and to Jeremy Clarkson (though it was his own silly fault and couldn't have happened to a nicer person).

(and I had been stupid enough to use an ATM that even at the time I thought looked a bit dodgy...).

But it is hard to find a ATM which doesn't look dodgy these days, all the ones in my area of work and home have chunks taken out of the card part or the receipt part, glass on the screen taken a battering and etc.....

This makes it more and more difficult to find a ATM I would be happy at using. When they are repaired it only takes a night to get it back to the state it was in.

I actually like a familiar bit of damage on a cash machine. I usually figure if I'm seeing the same bit of graffiti or damage I see every time on a given cashpoint then I'm not at least dealing with a false front.

I've just had a discussion with someone who was arguing that dressing provacatively in certains pubs and clubs is 'an invitation to rape'. Um, 'invitation' and 'rape'? Contradictory statement much?

Allfather wept.

Well coming out with a statement like that might be construed by certain others as an "invitation" to stamp on his balls. Not me, I'm a peace-loving soul. I'd watch though.

I lost my iPod somewhere in the streets. Gahhh, my musics!

Well, we lose our rings, but keep our fingers, as we say downhere. May the person who found (snatched/pick pocketed?) it enjoy the complete discography of Black Sabbath, among others...

Not content with the constant picketing of the funerals of soldiers, gay teens, or school shooting victims, Fred Phelp's church turns its attention to Heath Ledger's funeral.

There is a possibility that because of the high profile nature of the funeral, and the fact that they have been forced to pay out over 11 million dollars for such acts in the past, that Ledger's family might successfully sue and even be able to shut them down entirely.

Well, they're going to presumably have to go to Australia to picket it. I wonder if the laws against being an intensely annoying idiot are any more stringent down under.

I ought to be writing a reasoned response, but every time I go and look at that post I either get the red mist or want to cry.

A Nazi will punch you for the good of the state. A Communist will kick you for the good of the state. A liberal will do both while shaking your hand and telling you it’s for your own good.

Man, those are some h4x liberals.

Like Evil Scientist says if it's less than a month then I believe your old employer could very well be breaking the law.

Axolotl
14:21 / 28.01.08
I'd been employed there for less than a year (by 5 days!) and I believe that's the cut off point for most rights regarding unfair dismissal. Either way it's fairly shabby behaviour.

Doesn't look good, Axolotl:

"A redundancy may also be unfair is there is no genuine redundancy, and if the employer fails to show an alternative fair reason for dismissal. And it may be unfair on the grounds that it is unreasonable in the circumstances. This could be because there was a lack of consultation, an unfair selection procedure or a failure to offer alternative employment. In these cases the usual unfair dismissal qualifying conditions do apply - so the employee must have been continuously employed for a year."

Ah ok, I was lead to believe that if you have made someone redundant then you weren't allowed to advertise that job for a certain period of time, of course the year thing may work again in the employer's flavor.

Look. Just fuck you, alright? Fuck you. I am sick and tired of your continual militaristic bullshit, insistence on turning every situation into an opportunity to demonstrate what worms the rest of us are, and continuing to "playfully" cuff me around the head and shoulders despite the fact that I've told you I find it very triggering indeed. I am aware you've had a hard time of it, but that does not excuse your treatment of other people as objects, playthings and worshippers, your fascistic, elitist attitudes to class, intelligence and education, or your total failure to be anything but a self-aggrandising, selfish FUCK. You have caused quite extensive psychological harm to various people close to me through this behaviour, and either you're too STUPID to see it or just a really unpleasant human being. Moreover, your characterisation of me as an alcoholic, sexually-frustrated sad-sack is wide of the mark, to say the least, and your sexual one-upmanship with close friends of mine ("Oh, as long as you're COMFORTABLE with the fact that [your partner] wants to sleep with me more than she does with you") is repulsive, pathetic, and appalling. Please, please, do join the fucking Minutemen or the U.S. Army, as you harp on about constantly and experience the end result of your macho bullshit, you crypto-racist ("You can't try Arab men for sexual harrassment in this country"), puritanical, patronising BAG OF SHIT.
Don't speak to me, don't fucking hit me "in jest", don't belittle me or my friends, you fuck. I'm not turning this into the fight (either literal or metaphorical) that you want here because some of us are above that shit. Please, either join the socially adjusted or the military, I don't care which. Just stop perpetrating this triggering, unpleasant, unconscionable bullshit.

(...better now)

Thanks guys. I was kind of expecting that - I knew they'd screwed me and I thought they'd probably have covered their backs.

Businesses tend to do that, like me for example, I'm at home after being made redundent this morning.

Apparently they didn't make me redundent at xmas because my father died at the end of Nov so waited until the end of Jan. Not sure how they think that is less crappy but at the moment that's probably due to the fact I am still really hacked off and it pretty nasty to be made redundent anyhow.

Hah! Well, here I am after a fucking group interview in which I was asked to build a fucking jigsaw. Now actually that's a perfectly good way for the manager to see how people interact with eachother and I'm fine with it as a method, but for fuck's sake - I'm there trying to be as ridiculously friendly as possible and drum up conversations and work out a way of doing it with these 30 or more people of about my age and demographic and every one of the fuckers snubbed me. And I actually wanted to work at this place too. Barred from making a fucking living by degenerate scum - who couldn't share a sodding jigsaw puzzle because I was a rival.
