This makes you angry?!

For shame, Venger.

Why Venger should be so angry at the title of a Stereolab album track I've no idea.

GLAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGH! I've just had to really get into it with the biggotted fuck-head who sits near me at work, this morning he managed to rant about people from other ethnic background being inferior, girls pushing boys out of clubs if allowed in, and about how the "first world war was a disaster because we had a labour governement at the time". He then said that my insitance on equality and respect for all groups was a form of bigotry, which occasioned a rant of my own, strangely enough, which despite all being perfectly logical still didn't help, since he decided to answer with some crap about how I was obviously wrong since "men and women can't be equal because men can't have babies".

I then had to give up debate and threaten him with the rulebook, which clearly doesn't allow his crap to be stated at work - even that didn't work immediately, since it was initially met with something along the lines of "WE HAZ FOUGHT A WAR 4 FREEDUM OV SPEEK" or something along those lines, which nearly drew my back into debate about the fact he's never fought a bloody war, but I realized the futility of rational discussion and went back to telling him couldn't say these things under our rules.

I probably would have gone to management this time - except out entire management team are of on a training session elsewhere today - which means technically I'm in charge of my team, although I'm lacking in any power to actually back it up.

And I know me - I'll have calmed down tomorrow and not want to go to management. Still I got as close as I've gotten today, and it's a first for me to invoke the rulebook, so I think I'm moving towards it.

Do it.
If part of his job description (ie the rules) involves not expressing racist sentiment then he should be fired/disciplined/whatever.

I'm not entirely sure where I stand on racists being allowed to eat anyway.

You people are of course entirely correct. I'm not sure I can personally do it this time - but I've come up with a plan for how I'm going to proceed. This time I invoked the rule book rather than trying to win the argument based on reason, and/or shouting for the first time.

Next time it's invoking the rule book and an explicit threat to go to management. The next time I actually do it.

I know it's slow, and weak, and I should just be stronger and report it this time - but for me going to management, in response to someone who is frankly more screwed-up and stupid than pure evil, well it's a big thing. Arguing with management, and against the rulebook when they're wrong, that's easy - but this is tooth-pulling difficult for me, and it has to be slow, and according to a pre-set plan if I'm going to do it at all rather than just run screaming........

Management will have the same plan as you so the whole thing will take twice as long. If you are dead set on waiting you might want to consider recording incidents (including this most recent one) in some form of log, whatever is appropriate to your workplace.

Shiny, are you employed as this co-worker's counsellor? If not, allow me to quote Mr Burroughs: you are not paid to deal with this shit.

Oh quite right. Intellectually I know this to be true. But emotionally I find I have not quite yet reached the point at which I can make myself act on that intellectual understanding.

As I say the day is getting closer - something definitely snapped today as far as that goes. It's just I'm not quite ready yet. It's just the idea of fighting with the powers that be to squash someone, even someone how absolutely needs to be squashed as soon as possible is one that fills me with something akin to genuine horror.

I think the point I reached today is the point of realizing I will do it, probably sooner than later. But I don't know if I'm quite ready or able yet.

As a brief word of caution Things, I'd be absolutely sure that this oaf's behaviour is in clear breach of the office code of conduct before I took it any further, were I you.

If you're talking about going through whatever offical channels there may be, then that kind of thing can be a real headache, however much you've got truth and justice on your side, especially if you're the one making the complaint.

I obviously don't know what the situation in your office is like, but is there someone in management you could possibly talk to about this on an informal basis?

If so, that might be the way forward - most organisations tend to go into a panic when the code of conduct's invoked.

I say all this, of course, as a lifelong spineless coward.

Oh, I know all about the rulebook - as union rep I've spent many a long hour studying the blasted thing, although obviouly that was done in the interests of learning how to pull people out of the fire, not so I'd know exactly how to chuck them into the hottest parts of the blaze. Bigotted behaviour is very clearly a no-no. I did have a friendly manger whom I was working quite closely with on the general equalities issue, but unfortunately that individual has been promoted out of our office, so I'm not brilliantly fixed there. Our office manager is infinitely more timid than I am, so I have a feeling it's ultimately going to have to be the regional manager I talk to when I do - I'm fairly certain I will get support there, but the very fact it has to be a fairly senior manager makes it more intimidating......

ARGH.

If a straight white guy were in court for having fought back against another man who attacked him, and his attacker had sustained an injury and it couldn't be definitely proven that the defender had inflicted that injury, do you think it likely that the defender would be convicted for assault with a deadly weapon—framed by the media as a hate crime—and jailed for eleven years?

US to Fingerprint EU Visitors

That´s an english article I found after having read about this in a german newspaper. I´m sick of this Big Brother mentality. First it was two prints plus a photograph, now it´s ten plus a retina scan, which can be read by the FBI and CIA! What´s next? I get incarcerated for a week, while they do multiple tests on me to test whether I´m a terrorist and not a tourist? I know the two words sound a lot alike but there is a difference, you know? Visiting Britain, I don´t even need my passport! As long as this fearmongering is going on, I´ll never set a foot on US soil. Not voluntarily, at least.

There's nothing like reading Daily Express headlines over people's shoulders to make a bad commute worse.

'Hunt for Arab's yacht'
'Henman is King of Wimbledon again'

These people live in a different world. I want to see that world come crashing down around their ears in flames.

Right, so you work on the phones. You work on the disability-specific line. Your role is to facilitate people who would wish to attend shows and are physically or mentally impaired in a sense that requires extra care.

I understand that you find your job annoying, that you wish you were elsewhere, doing something else. But it starts to grate me when you SHOUT at any customer in your most patronising voice whenever they ask you to repeat yourself. Do you find it particularly difficult to understand that they might have hearing difficulties, that they might not understand what you are saying or that they might just NOT BE ABLE TO HEAR YOU. You aren't really very clearly spoken.

So that's annoying. I'm sure the customer feels similar. But when you start referring to your customers as 'ret***s' after they have left the call, i get pissed off.

When you follow this by having a big fucking laugh about how much of an idiot, how weird, how ret***ed your autistic colleague is behind his back, i just want to cry. And break parts of you. But mostly cry.

That you haven't been fired yet speaks volumes about the company i work for.

That is diabolical, tramps. Is there no way of persuading this arsehole of the severe inadvisability of using hate speech against your own co-workers and customer group, let alone in general?

People who have zero powers of empathy and lousy manners in phone work really get my goat. I have been one such and I'm sure I will be again, because very occasionally members of the public can be annoying or fail to understand matters that, because you deal with them every day, you imagine must be comprehensible to anyone. But talk like that is just unacceptable.

Will you please for Christ's sake stop banging on about your fucking SO's depression like it makes hir special or interesting or some sort of suffering Christ figure?

Will you? Or will I have to smack you briskly around the face?

Special and interesting ze may well be, but not because ze's "clinically depressed". This is not a magic diagnosis that excuses any behaviour and elevates the sufferer to a higher, more tragically dramatic state of being, you total wanker. Also, fewer of the coy hints about you understanding and empathising because you've had "the black dog" a few times. You are not living in a Russian novel or an Italian opera. Just fuck off.

One quarter of the fucking population is "clinically depressed" at some point in their lives. Also, coincidentally, the number of people who will get some form of cancer. Now that's something to get depressed about.

So, in conclusion, please, please, please stop going on about it like it's glamorous or interesting. Trust me, it's neither.

(Disclaimer: I have never to my knowledge been clinically depressed. I'm not pissed off with the depressee, but with hir genderfriend's starstruck attitude towards hir depression.)

This is a Christian country and if you choose to live here you abide by the laws of the customs and laws of the country. If this is not acceptable then please leave without delay.

Erm, no, you gibbering fool, the 'laws of the customs' don't prohibit any clothing and we theoretically have religious freedom so do please fuck off and take every other person who commented with you.

And to continue with my earlier theme...

I'm totally sick of stories like these. These veils are freakish and intimidating and should be banned entirely. I work in the public sector and have stood my ground twice against veil wearing women. I am female myself but they still refused to show their faces. With such heavy accents and bad use of English on top, I had no choice but to refuse them service as I couldn't understand or hear what they were trying to say to me and I felt uncomfortable beyond belief being confronted by a faceless pair of eyes. The annoying part of this is the Magistrates "crime" will far overshadow hers of causing thousands of pounds worth of damage to a housing association giving her and her kids a roof over their heads. I hope they find her guilty and deport them.

My rage is at iTunes. I'm one of the lucky millions who installed v7 and it can't even manage to play music without stuttering and juddering. Opening a web page at the same time is too much for it to handle. So bollox to that and back to super stable Foobar2000.

AND....when I'm using iTunes to download podcasts, and my crappy wifi cuts off, it thinks that the download is done and I can't restart it or redo it to get the whole program. bah.
