Y'know when you ask Pandora why it's given you a particular song and it says "Because of x, y, z and many other musical qualities identified in the music genome project"?

Does anyone else think that they bundle all the other attributes into "other musical qualities" because they've labeled them things like "awful mopy crap" or "really gay guitar riffing"?

I ssh'd into my bounce point server using my new blackberry. This makes me very happy as I have spent over 30 hours (literally) fighting with my new corporate cell phone carrier to get me the correct phone, set it up correctly, and give me the damn thing.

It appears that they send the devices locked to the stores and the clerks are expected to unlock them using a 4 digit code. However with the blackberries if you enter this code incorrectly 10 times a security feature will wipe all of the configured settings rendering it a useless bit of shiny black plastic. Naturally the clerk had never seen one of these before and triggered this feature before I arrived. I then got to spend several hours on the phone with a nice tech walking me through reconfiguring the thing using the tiny strange keyboard. The call queue for their support was out of sight because of the stupid new time change.

Yes, I overrode the poor fumbling clerk taking the device and employee only support line away from him when I overheard him ask what HTTP meant.

However I dare say the last two weeks of standing around the cell phone store and waiting online while the manager pulled his head out of his ass felt completely and utterly like how I imagine Purgatory. They even gave me the incorrect phone number for the device and I had to call someone with caller ID to give me the correct number as the phone's settings were screwed up.

Perhaps it was all just some sort of device bonding ritual as I now feel like I know the wee bugger inside and out. My summer is sure to be spent doing as much work as possible out of the office. YAY!

Just be careful not to turn into a Crackbery addict.
Well done on taking the phone off the clerk. I do it all the time in Comet.

Pandora just took me to this song about nutrition.

It makes me happy, but I wonder why giving thumbs up to only Ben Folds songs brought me too it?

Love is good, isn't it, Kali? (specially when reciprocated). I'm a bit envious of you, but in a good way (if that's even possible.

And it's all Barbelith's fault.

Princess, I have sat in a marquee and listened to Lou from Lamb sing Gorecki live with just her acoustic guitar as accompaniment and her smallest boy asleep at her feet on the grass in front of her. I did this holding The Beautiful Man's hand and we both had tears streaming down our faces.

She and I have shared the job of cooking for our children. I don't know why that makes me happy, but it really does. I think mainly it's the priviledge of knowing a person who can produce such beautiful music.

I never get past the normality of angels.

Not sure about a happy, exactly, but certainly a curious smile. From Tom’s link, here to this page :

The monks at the Hong Hock See temple in Georgetown on Penang Island have had to learn to live with nature. Some years ago they shared their temple compound with a cobra. The chief monk, the Venerable Boon Keng, told the BBC that they'd become used to meditating alongside the snake but eventually decided to catch it and take it away to a nearby forest.

Now, he says, the cobra's place has been taken by a colony of fire ants, but the ants are dropping down from the temple's sacred bodhi tree onto people meditating below - and when they bite they cause painful swelling. The Venerable Boon Keng practices what he calls 'letting go' meditation - so he 'lets go' of the pain - but out of consideration for worshippers less far along the path to enlightenment the monks are looking for ways to persuade the ants to go.

An attempt to remove them using a vacuum cleaner failed - so the Buddhist community is appealing for help. They can't encourage anyone to harm the ants, but the chief monk says that if someone turns up unbidden and deals with them without the monks' involvement then that's the will of the universe. The monks will simply offer prayers for the ants' well-being.

Yes, I am a good boy today! Good good good. And, for some reason very very horny. Which is kinda nice, if a tad frustrating, seeing as I won't dally with the missus until tomorrow...

i am happy that, by stumbling across barbelith, i somehow unwittingly have found myself amongst a group of people who know and appreciate the moomins. No one else I know at home has read them except my family and Finnish ex.

moomins RAWK.

Moomiphiliacs unite! But you're right, moominphilia seems to hover uneasily in the cultural crack that exists between Barbelith and Scandinavia.

Childe F is a Moominfan, and even at the age of five she likes the weirder stories from Moominvalley. Mini Moomins could be heading her way soon.

They're just the right sort of weird for when you're little, aren't they? There's storms and floods and park-keepers and an Ant-Lion and the Groke, but in the middle of it all there's a Moominhouse and Moominmamma, Moominpapa, and nice almost-grownup people like Snufkin, so it's all right.

I think that's what fascinates her - it certainly does me. She loved the illustrated The Book About Moomin, Mymble and Little My to bits for years, but the stories in the books are beginning to work their magic on her. The one about the zoo is awesome.

Or my brain is addled today and I'm being paramnesiac about Moomin stories. I will check when I can find the book in her currently-darkened room if I made it up.
