I like the idea that the character won't necessarily have 'powers' in a given story - mine doesn't have any superhero/sf/fantasy elements at all. The 'existing in all dimensions' thing is just demonstrated by the fact that she's in all these different stories, right?

quote:The rights. All things created in a Shifter story go public, or just the Shifter herself? I think it would be more inviting, and safer, to just make it the Shifter herself.

Agreed - I'm growing quite attached to my supporting cast...

Alright, so we have stories by the Nelson/Flyboy Connection, the Zoom/Moriarty Foundation, Intercontinental Champion The Rizla, and something solo by me, probably a jungle comic, because I certainly dig those jungle comics.

Anyone else?

I won't be drawing my contributions anytime soon, but I am going on vacation for a week, so I'll probably do the thumbnails then.

So, of the five people who are definitely involved. Let's get this set up properly.

Which name do you prefer? The Shifter or Jenny (or Joan or Jada or whatever) Everywhere?

Does she look ok?

And what powers does she have? Exists in all dimensions at once, able to access the knowledge and tools available to her other selves if she wishes, while secretly preferring to rely on her own wits? Or something else?

Thank you. See you in a week.

Mine's set in a Guatemalan jungle, it's about two hours solid work from being done, done. She is never named - the whole thing is a conversation between her and a wounded man. She's sort of an uber-backpacker in my piece, a little childish, but in that 19-year-old been-there, done-that kind of way. And there's a monkey.

Now I just need to find those two hours...

Is it too late to jump on board this thing? I've only just read the thread, bizarrely, and I'm quite keen.

Can't draw for toffee, though - writing only. Someone let me know.

Bastard. The jungle was mine.

Of course you can join in, Sax. We want the world to join in. You'll have to find your own artist though.

I'd like to join in, as I've never written/drawn a comic before. I've just got two questions:

(1) Moriarty, I really like your version of the Shifter. However,
(a) before I saw your drawing, I already had an image in mind of what she looked like;
(b) I don't think I would be able to draw her to look as good as yours anyway.
Can my "Jenny Everywhere" look different than everyone elses?

(2) Since I've never worked on a project liked this before, I don't know how much time to budget and thus would prefer a firm (or at least semi-erect) deadline. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Don't forget me! I'm playing!

I intend to have the shifter appear in about four different worlds within a 6 pager. i'd like to link her shifting powers to toast consumption, but can be persuaded otherwise.

sax - have a look at this picture for a rough idea of my style. I know, it's a painting, in colour, not a comic in black and white, but it's the only thing i've got on the web right now. if you like it, i'd be happy to hook up.

edited to say - using your own story, obviously, not my crackpot toast idea

I'm in if it's not too late. I got an idea last night. I even think I've figured out how I'm going to manage the art.

I'm cool with the name Jenny Everywhere, the toast, and the world-shifting. Whatever you guys come up with.

Grant, can I mention your monkey????

Captain Zoom

I know the last thing we need is another suggestion for a name but "Kathy Quantum" just popped into my head, recalling old school Wonder Woman and all those strange comics about models and stuff.

I'm easy though. In my script I referred to her as the shifter. whatever she gets called is okay. Maybe just modify it a little to Jenna, rather than Jenny.
Then in the logo you can have that cool little "ae" thing as the centrepoint.

Zoom.

go for it. the monkey has no name, and his only line is "ch-chtt!"
but he's obviously the shifter's buddy.

my script is now in the artist's capable hands.

(edited to add
oh, and mine's not really an adventure story. there's some talk about natives, but they never actually appear. and if any other writers want to throw in references to the 10 commandments, go ahead. I did.

As a title, Jenny Everywhere gets my vote, but that's not to say that The Shifter, Kathy Quantum etc couldn't be applied to her various selves. Imagine you're a dimension hopping, copyright snubbing, devil-may-care Lady About Universe (with a monkey)....you'd have titles galore, and what's more you'd love it.

quote:Originally posted by moriarty:[QB]And what powers does she have? Exists in all dimensions at once, able to access the knowledge and tools available to her other selves if she wishes, while secretly preferring to rely on her own wits? Or something else?[QB]

For 'dimension' maybe we should read 'writer' . In one 'dimension' she's sharp, resourceful and subtle. In another 'dimension' she unleashes molten death from her goggles and disintegrates the bad guys. In another 'dimension' she's a bent goddess with thing about toast. And so on. And however much cross-pollenation occurs between her different manifestations is up to whichever 'dimension' is dictating that particular story...? Just a thought.

Wow. You people are all fucking brilliant. This is very cool.

Ok. The name thing. I like the idea that her name is kind of ambiguous, and that she might be called Jenny Everywere, but people call her the Shifter. In fact, I was just thinking that I might do a story where she's trying to convince all her friends that The Shifter is a real cool nickname, but they think it's lame.

Since that's been dealt with (or, ignored because we really don't care), the only other thing is to decide what to name the comic itself, both for the e-zine and the print zine. We can cross that bridge when we come to it.

Mr. Todd and Mr. Evergreen. Interesting points. However, I'm going to have to disagree with you both slightly. The whole idea of this exercise is that we have wildly divergent stories all based around the same character. If you change the character dramatically, you defeat the purpose of the whole exercise. So far as Ms. Everywhere's looks go, Mr. Todd, she doesn't have to look spot on. I really doubt everyone here is going to get close to what I made her look like, and why the fuck should they? I'm betting they improve her look.

However, she has signifiers that make her who she is, visually. First off, the scarf and the goggles on her head. She has short hair. She wears comfortable clothes. She has meat on her bones, and she wears it well. She has confidence and charisma. She appears to be asian (I based her off of a photo I found in a girls' magazine from Japan) or Native American (she looks kind of like my former roommate). She has a ready smile.

Do all of these things need to be represented? Absolutely not. However, the fewer you have the less likely it will be to recognize her as the Shifter. By all means, do your own interpretation, but please at least leave in the goggles, the scarf and the short hair.

Mr. Evergreen, you are right that each dimension is the writer. But the whole point is that the dimensions change, while the Shifter remains relatively the same. Will we all have an exact vision of the Shifter? of course not. Mine won't have a monkey or eat toast, but that doesn't mean I'm not looking forward to seeing some monkey and toast action. If people want to muck with her origin or her personal details, so be it. Zoom and I are going to make it so that there's no way she can have a definitive origin anyway.

However, we should all be on the same page about her powers. She is immensely powerful. She exists in all dimensions at once. Infinite dimensions. She can acquire knowledge from any one of her other selves. She may even acquire objects from her other selves. I was thinking about this earlier tonight, but she may even be able to move through time, or change size, or become one with everything. Strange as it may sound, she shouldn't shoot eyebeams, or use super-strength, or any of the rest of it. Unless you can find some creative, dimension fuelled way to utilize these powers.

When I originally worked on the superhero comic that the Shifter was to be a part of, in one issue, in order to avoid the death of all life, including hers, she turns zero dimensional, ceasing to exist. Then she comes back. Impossible? Who cares! It's all about the silver age, baby. I want adults to cry foul, and children to pretend that they can turn zero dimensional themsleves.

I'm using that in my comic, by the way. Please don't touch.

Here's the clincher with the Shifter. I've said it hordes of times, and I'll say it again. My vision of the Shifter is of a hugely powerful being that always plays fair. She will never use her powers against something that is less powerful than herself, or at least when it may cause her bodily harm. To illustrate, if a bunch of gangsters try to shoot her, she will jump behind some crates, come swinging on a rope, or just punch them in the nose. She thrives on the thrill, even if it brings her close to death. Not every story of the Shifter has to have powers or dimension hopping in it. One person might have some great cosmic battle, someone else can have a slice-of-life story, and someone else might want to go Indiana Jones style.

Her powers are a McGuffin. They aren't the reason for the story. They're the means to get to the story, or explain a twist in the story.

There's going to be exceptions to all of this. Someone might have her use her powers in defense of others. Someone might have her wearing a leather catsuit and a motorcycle helmet. But, again, the less signifiers for the Shifter you put into a story, the more likely you will not be writing a Shifter story.

Which brings me to my last point. Thankfully. The e-zine and print zine. You have all right to make a Shifter story anyway you like, and distribute it as you like. However, if I receive something that does not resemble a Shifter story at all, I may not print it in the zine. I'm very open to many interpretations, believe me. But if I get something that has nothing to do with the character at all aside from name, then I won't see the point in spending money and time to print it and promote it.

Last thing. Colour comics and comics not in the right proportions are cool for the e-zine. They may not be cool for the print zine. You have been warned.

Holy fuck I can talk.

Yuppity yup yup, all the above sounds good good good.

re title, as m. said we don't need to think of this just yet, but i reckon it should be fairly simple/ descriptive, "Barbelith presents Shifter tales vol.1" or something

oh, and moriarty, i'm sure i'm not the only person who'd be prepared to share the financial burden involved in printing etc. again, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

moriarty
11:34 / 21.02.02
There's no burden. I'm just going to photocopy them, make five or so copies for each person, and include unstapled, unfolded pages for each contributor to make their own copies if desired. Anyone willing to be in the print zine will have to allow their work to be reproduced in such a way. I think it'll be neat. We can spread that shit in multiple different countries.

I was packing and I noticed an old Comics Journal on the floor, with a James Robinson interview. Oops. We might want to rethink the goggles.

I was not thinking of Chance when I made the Shifter. I was thinking of old photos of aviators. Still, we might want to ditch the goggles, or at least open it up to the possibility of different headgear. Keep the scarf, the short hair, and notice the barrett, if that's your style.

Regrettable Juvenilia

I think I'll be alright keeping the goggles (and scarf) - my take on the character is more a riff on Jubilee (from the X-books) crossed with Olive from Brian Wood's Couscous Express... She has a parka hoodie.

I agree with flyboy - i like the goggles.
is it just the similarity that worries you, or potential copyright infringement?
I'm sure the content of our combined efforts will be fairly difficult to confuse with whatever lurks behind that cover.
If I was a reader it wouldn't confuse me - I've never heard of Chance.

Sax
12:54 / 21.02.02
Another vote for the goggles. They're already branded on my synapses as integral to the look of Jenny.

If we wanted to change them slightly, we could either make them more snowboarder gogs than aviator ones (a la Cleopatra) or have Jenny wearing them dangling round her neck rather than on top of her head.

But I think we should stick with plan a.

Leave it to Chance... the comics version of the famed Husker Du Effect (every pop songwriter will, from time to time, write a brand new song then discover it has already been recorded by Husker Du.)

I do the research and see - oh, James Robinson, the Starman dude. He likes goggles.

The character is the daughter of an occult investigator.
I found a few other illustrations, but only that one cover has the goggles. I'd keep 'em.

Hey folks, I have a script. Any artist out there who wants to take a look and see if the thing is interesting?
The story is called "Planet David" and is a slow-paced, more slice-of-life kind of story.

Don't worry, mine's gonna look like shit too.
It's so much more fun if you stop caring about whether it looks shit and just get on with telling the story, I find (same goes for reading comics in fact).

My story, incidentally, is shaping up to be a sort of low key, gothic, post-apocalyptic kind of affair featuring feral children, insanity, magazine publishing and dead dogs.

Though it'll probably be completely different by the time it's transcribed onto paper.
