Just heard that US Defence force is on an 'Amber' alert. This means they're on the case, but not actualy at a state of war. Yet.

At least the war on DRUGS seems pretty insignifigant now.

I have no clue how to react.

I want to know WHY.

Was there a motive? A statement?

They're talking about declaring war on TV.

Am I dreaming?

Did anyone see Yasser Arafats statement, that man was in shock, he had a lot of trouble just reading his statement and answering the few questions he did.

Oh from what I've seen on the bbc, 4 planes with one in the air that they were still worried about.
2 hit towers, 1 hit pentagon, one crashlanded, no 'official' word on how it went down. Either unconnected, the pilot crashed it to aviod killing thousands of people or they shot it down.

To all the new york crowd, words fail me, hope no one lost anyone and sorrow if they did.

Bush said that 'Freedom has been attacked today', does anyone know if that was before or after America was attacked?

Slightly less flippantly... I've been flicking between BBC News and CNBC (with ITN news for content free information) all afternoon, looking out for when certain keywords were used, Bin Ladin and Islamic Terrorists came in fairly quickly at about 1613, initially on American news, unsurprisingly, along with disgusted showing of celebrating Palestinians.

Now Blair is announcing what Britain is going to do and doing the full suppressed emotion thing. Apparently UK police are on high alert and there won't be any planes flying over London. Guess he's worried about someone aiming a plane at Downing Street.

About an hour ago one of the American airlines said they'd lost a plane. Has it been found yet?

is the cnn site still swamped?

NATO ambassadors meet tomorrow at 9:00am, not sure if that's uk time but the report came from bbc.

blair's speech:
highest security at airports. flight paths across london altered. uk police on full alert, defence on full alert internationally.

"a number of other security measures have been taken".

"their barbarism will stand as their shame for all eternity"

he's repeating his lines about terrorism being the "new evil".

"we will not rest until this evil is driven from the world"

Somebody on UK Ch5 said it had come down near 'Shanksville', could be more spurious rumour...

several personal reports of being being abusive towards "towel-heads" in the usa. might lead to racial tensions, riots and curfews.

i think too many people are just too numb though.

So far I've heard nothing new, there's a lot of concern about the other hijacked planes and where they are, A bit of local info Which may not mean a lot to most Barbelithers (Chelsea Piers on 23rd St and Hudson River has turned into a makeshift ER)and a lot of anti-Mideast hyperbole from politicians. No word on body count or FACTUALinfo on responsibility.

The plane/helicopter noises overhead are lessening, though, for which I am grateful.

I really don't want to be cavalier at this time, but something to ponder:

The pictures I've seen of the seemingly celebrating Palistinians could have been taken, for all I know, two years ago. I don't understand the language I'm hearing (is it Arabic?) and I don't see any clear proof linking this footage to the attacks in the states. Can anyone interpret Arabic?

For all we know its part of a blanket media response being dictated by the top people in the states, a right they're entitled to under Defcon, if I'm not mistaken.

Can anyone clarify?

Also, does anyone have any links to any far-Eastern news coverage sites?

i don't know exactly how accurate this is, but a guy on the ellis forum reported that all the hostage/terrorist negotiators were on training in california. all of them.

now, that seems a bit stupid to me. sure everyone needs training, but if that's the case that they were all there, that's a spooky little coincidence.

oh, and if this originated from the middle east as everyone seems to think, it might be a good idea to fill your cars up, since oil prices are going through the roof...

Two things:

1)This erases any hope of the Palestinians for the U.S. to help them out concerning Isreal. Seeing Palestinians celebrating in the street was disgusting, something the American people won't forget.

2)Does anyone else wonder what kind of information was lost when the Pentagon was hit? The crash has taken out a good portion of the building and it's still on fire as we "speak". I wonder how much valuable information has been destroyed.

I remember the same shit during the Gulf War, Ganesh. Apparently, following footage of celebrating Palestinians, students at a local high school (okay, my partner teaches) were saying stuff like, "can we bomb them?" After a a painstaking explanation of why they were cheering (irregardless of the footage's authentitcity for now) they seemed to calm down. But yeah. Flipping thruogh channels felt like a cut up: footage of first tower (flip) "The Museum of National Tolerance in LA has been shut down."

doesn't really matter if the footage is real or not. I'm sure there are plenty of people celebrating. lots of peeps out there see Amerika as the enemy.

does anyone else think that this might not have happened if Bush wasn't such an asshole about foreign policy?

Looking for links etc. from the other side of the fence now... but no afghan/middle-eastern sites seem to have much yet.

interesting that bin laden's guys claimed then denied responsibility. hmm.

fingers crossed for the world

i just hope bush counts to 10 before doing ANYTHING. the scale of this thing was so staggering that he's gonna feel obliged to stage a massive rally event in retaliation.

...but if this is a terrorist attack (from whatever quarter), that's simply not a valid response. bombing the fuck out of some backwater capital is going to be just as much an attack on innocents, civilians as anything.

this feels fucking apocalyptic.

Well when you've had jets dropping bombs and missiles on your houses for a while I expect rational thought not to be the first thing on the agenda.

But you're probably right, the Palestine situation just got even more fucked up, something I honestly didn't believe was possible.

I attend school in Pittsburgh and this morning all students were ordered to evacuate the dorms and all classes are cancelled. Many people seem all prepared to bomb the fuck out of any country with Arabians in it. Quote from a friend of mine:

Friend- "Better Bush than Gore in there"
Me- (in extremely incredulous tone) "Why?"
Friend- "Bush'll bomb the hell out of them. Nobody messes with Texas!"

This is a common thought with many of the students. The Middle East is in serious trouble....

The majority of New Yorkers I've interacted with since 9AM this morning share your opinion. Now, maybe 75-100 people don't represent the whole city...but the consensus on the street is that Bush paved the way for this with his attitude and lack of sensitivity in foreign affairs. Despite the media displays of anger, the reality is that we're sad. And scared shitless about what happens next.
