I suppose people dislike this thread because it's an unrepentantly negative space. It is also full of bad argumentation and subjectivity dressed up like objectivity.

but boboss, that's why this is the best thread in the music forum right now.

Maybe you could combine them and finally answer that age-old question: does a bear shit in the woods?

Oh, quit your grumbling, there's nothing wrong with doing a little good natured bagging on untouchable pop icons. My only complaint about this thread is that people are just picking easy targets. That's no fun at all.

The Jam- Playing absolutely pedestrian pop songs fast won't make them any better, but it might keep people from noticing how sappy and ham-fisted all the lyrics are.

Why? Because people are expressing opinions that may or may not be reasoned and educated? Or is it because your holy bovines are getting slaughtered?

Yeah, that's right. Because I'm not capable of mounting a counter-argument. Even though I just did. Well done, Uri - you read my mind.

Actually, Boboss got it spot on - it's because because it's

A) the easiest fucking thing in the world to slag something off
B) the slaggings hereabouts are, in the main, lazy as all hell.

Can I ask what "technical competance" means to you? I have no problems with Hendrix's sacred cow-ness being killed, but it's a weird charge to bring against him. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding you.

Hmm, that's a very fair question.

I don't use in the same way you do I think. I merely use it as shorthand for "somebody who is very good on their chosen instrument and can do a wide variety of things with it".

However, I've been pondering this whole subject more today and it occurs to me that it's true to say that the vast majority of artists that I like are ones I got into because I liked their lyrics.

So I think I'd like to back down on my Hendrix comments. Because, thinking about it seriously, I think the reason I consider him a sacred cow is less to do with his merits or otherwise, and more the simple fact that he works in a medium that I'm just not attracted to on a general gut level.

E.93, you seem to be taking it personally. It's been my experience that talking music is much like talking sports, and that means that you should expect a certain amount of trash talking about your favorite team. The threads in the music forum tend to be dedicated to praising bands/ genres/ certain records, and I don't think that this thread is hurting anything by providing a place for folks to do a little shit talking too.

I'm with m to a degree- i found the trashing of Tom Waits funny- cos there was a more than a little truth in it- i love Tom Waits, but it still made me laugh. I laughed at Gumbitch's description of Joanna Newsome- i like her too but could see his point.

I disagree with Boboss- its not all negative space- look at the Fall stuff, a criticism was made - then it was challenged- finishing with the person who started off moaning promising to check out a few of the name checked records.

I don't think there is anything wrong with saying 'I know i'm supposed to like x or y- weeeeell i really don't. Sorry'.

It's a funny confessional thread- most of the criticism has been played out with a degree of humour- and anyone stepping over the line has had their toes gentley nudged back into place.

In fact the first real moment of heartfelt negitivity was from Dupre- but then we'll forgive him.

Roll on the thread, roll on!

Hell, I even like all the bands that I've cut on so far.
