Can I ask what "technical competance" means to you? I have no problems with Hendrix's sacred cow-ness being killed, but it's a weird charge to bring against him. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding you.
Hmm, that's a very fair question.
I don't use in the same way you do I think. I merely use it as shorthand for "somebody who is very good on their chosen instrument and can do a wide variety of things with it".
However, I've been pondering this whole subject more today and it occurs to me that it's true to say that the vast majority of artists that I like are ones I got into because I liked their lyrics.
So I think I'd like to back down on my Hendrix comments. Because, thinking about it seriously, I think the reason I consider him a sacred cow is less to do with his merits or otherwise, and more the simple fact that he works in a medium that I'm just not attracted to on a general gut level. |
