Stoatie, the movie Harvey was directed by a chap called Henry Koster.

Oh, and my mate Alan says Harvey is the kind of movie that puts its arm around your shoulders and says "come on mate, let's go and have a beer".

Sorry for the rot.

The Gary Jules version of Mad World is pretty big in the UK now and played all over the radio. It's even tipped for (maybe) a Christmas #1! This might bring back interest in Donnie Darko and perhaps more people will get to see it.

I've kinda forgotten what Tears for Fears version of the track sounds like now... must dust of Kazaa

Yay!!!

Oh, and fuck the Daily Mail (fuck them up their stupid asses) for fielding a revolting and characteristically mean-spirited article about how Christmas number ones aren't cheerful any more.

Ok, Mad World may not be cheerful, but at least it's not completely fucking shite.

So as to avoid threadrot, let me just say this, for the benefit of anyone happening upon this thread who hasn't seen the film:

Here's the latest on the new movie from Richard Kelly, the director of Donnie Darko. The musical format sounds like it's got some good potential, and seems almost Bollywood as he puts it here. The cast listed there has a lot of quality people, and Moby on music is a good sign.

No matter what this guy does, I'm going to be there for his next film, Donnie Darko earned him that.

I only just got around to seeing this, believe it or not, and was suitably blown away, particularly since I had no idea what it was even about before sliding in the DVD. Comments to follow maybe, though I doubt I'll have anything to say that hasn't been covered at length here already. I will say that I found the website hopelessly obtuse to the point of being counterproductive. I seriously doubt I would've had to the patience to explore much of it; fortunately the summary here made that unnecessary in any case. That's obviously a fairly minor quibble, though.

Mmm, musicals ... aaaeehhrr!

(NB that was supposed to be the noise Homer Simpson makes when thinking about doughnuts, beer, TV etc. usually accompanied by drool)

New Richard Kelly movie sounds awesome, although it's worth pointing out that I can enjoy even the dumbest musical. Still I'd probably be disappointed if this was dumb. Oh well, let's hope Singin' In The Rain rather than At Long Last Love, know worra mean?

I thought a while ago it was reported that his next movie was a time travel hard core sci-fi piece. Anyone remember this? I think it's even mentioned earlier in this thread somewhere...

Here's the latest info on Kelly's new movie:

Southland Tales is a musical-comedy-thriller from writer-director Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko). The film is set in Los Angeles 2008 during a three-day heatwave leading up to a big July 4th celebration. The film will incorporate singing and dancing as well as dream sequences. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Sean William Scott lead the cast while Moby might contribute new music.

And here, scavenged from another thread here on the Lith, is the mention of the sci-fi time-travel thing I thought Kelly was doing next:

>> The latest screenplay that Darwin Mayflower takes a look at is a supernatural thriller re-written by the writer/director of Donnie Darko, Richard Kelly. In Knowing, a 40-year-old children's school time capsule is prematurely unearthed and it's soon discovered that one child seems to have known about disasters that had yet to happen...and that will still happen. Can one man change the future before the world is destroyed? Better still, does the script have all the ingredients to become a white-knuckle ride at the movies?

I'm actually glad he's doing the musical drama and not doing another sci-fi-ish time-travel flick....variety is nice.

Quite a line up. Nice to see Buffy's doing non-scoobie work. I'm curious though, why didn't you make a thread for this movie, FH? Is it a long time coming? When's this out?

News from the Sci-Fi Channel about the Director's Cut of DONNIE DARKO:

Kelly: New Darko Is Different

Richard Kelly, director of the cult SF movie Donnie Darko, told SCI FI Wire that his recently finished extended cut of the movie, which is due in theaters later this year, dramatically alters the movie. "[Newmarket Films] is re-releasing it, and they're letting me have a director's cut, which will come out this summer in theaters, that I just finished today," Kelly said in an interview at the Saturn Awards on May 5. "No one's seen it yet, but it will definitely be a completely new experience as a film. It will probably surprise and shock even the most hardcore fans."

Kelly said that completing this new version was an opportunity to fully develop all of his original ideas for the film and create what he considered a complete rendering of Donnie Darko. "Ultimately, for me, I'm just psyched I finally got to finish the film," he said. "While I'm proud of the theatrical cut, I feel like there were some elements that were never fully realized that I'm excited to be able to realize now. It's been a dream come true, and I'm really lucky to have gotten to do it."

Donnie Darko stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a disaffected teen who narrowly escapes death, then finds himself taking instructions for increasingly destructive behavior from a 6-foot rabbit. Kelly said that the director's cut will premiere at the end of May, and the film's subsequent distribution will be based upon initial reactions from filmgoers at the upcoming Seattle Film Festival. "They're going to test it in Seattle May 29th, and they're going to determine, like, a week later what the audience is, if they can really sell it to the multiplexes and to the suburban crowd," Kelly said. "The anticipation would be that maybe it could cross over and become more than just a cult film. It might become more of a mainstream success."

Thoughts on new Richard Kelly film? Let's put it this way. Donnie Darko is perhaps one of the best directorial debuts I have ever acquainted myself with. And Janeane Garofalo is an actress I would like to 'acquaint' myself. Go-go-go!

So the director's cut opens this week. Anyone see it? It sounds not all that exciting from what I've heard and read. The New York Times even had an article on it this past weekend.

from Cinescape.com:

Thursday at the San Diego Comic Convention a panel was held to focus on Richard Kelly's DONNIE DARKO: THE DIRECTOR'S CUT, in limited release in theaters as of today. Attending the panel was Kelly, the film'd director/writer, producer Sean McKittrick and actors Stuart Stone (Ronald Fisher) and James Duval (Frank the Bunny.)

Kelly spoke about the changes incorporated into the DIRECTOR'S CUT which adds on 20 minutes of new material, new visual effects and additional music. While the first-time filmmaker had considered the possibility of a director's cut "ten years down the road," he told the crowd that he never in his wildest imaginations envisioned Newmarket Films wanting to re-release an expanded version of DARKO into theaters.

Kelly got interested in directing after seeing the "Jamie's Got a Gun" Aerosmith video. He called MTV to ask who was behind the video he saw and got his answer: a young filmmaker named David Fincher, a guy who got his career started by directing music videos in the late 1980s and early 90s. Kelly began reading up on Fincher and then learned that his first film was ALIEN 3, which excited him, since the ALIEN movies were some of his favorites.

Ever since first watching Kelly's bizarre tale of teen frustration, time travel theory and creepy man-sized bunnies that foretell prophecies about the end of the world, fans of DONNIE DARKO have been wondering what the filmmaker intended the ultimate solution to the film to be. "What does it mean?" mused Kelly at the panel. "What does to you? I don't think there's one conclusion. The director's cut has a more logical design to the story, but there is no definitive conclusion."

Kelly also stated that the DONNIE DARKO DIRECTOR'S CUT DVD will be a two-disc set with new extra features including an extensive "video production diary." Currently the director is prepping his second feature, SOUTHLAND TALES, to begin shooting this coming September.
