You expect me to remember that? Sheesh, you're supposed to remind me of this stuff every couple of weeks. I thought we had an agreement.

Sorry, a good portion of this weekend was spent watching the first three Love Hina DVDs a couple of times. After the last couple of weeks I had at work, my first 48 hour period of no work in several weeks, needed to be filled with a very silly series, that knows it's very silly, and so makes the most of it. The whole thing is full of parodies. From travel stuff to magical girl transformation scenes, it's all turned into a goof.

ANYWAYS... Seperate question that I'll just tack on here. Anyone know of any good anime/manga blog type things? Thanks.

I place My Neighbor Totoro in the essential anime category. Cute and strangely sinister. CAT BUS, CAT BUS!!!!!

I also saw The Yamadas the other day. A Japanese Simpsons, it was awesome.

Interesting stuff. I once owned Akira on video until someone 'borrowed' it from me.

I've heard nothing but good things about Neon Genesis Evangelion and I want to check it out. Here's the dilemma: It's only available on video here in the UK (complete with crappy dubbing).

Are there any NGE obsessives out there who might have any idea about the release of that DVD box set over here?

Arcboi:

I know people who have the DVDs. I think they're Region 2 as well. It's not cheap, but it is available. I just wish EOE would come out on DVD as well, because it's as I say all the fricking time, so essential.

But it's possible to get them, or at least import... surely you can do region-free DVD?

Damn. Point me in the right direction for these region 2 DVD's then as I can't find them.

I usually watch DVD's on my computer (which is a Mac) and that can be a bit "funny" even with normal DVD's. I suspect it will start screaming at other region DVD's even if there is a work-around for it. Please prove me wrong!

Incidently, I did notice someone apparently selling what looks like a bootleg collection of the entire run on Ebay which can be viewed on PC's with Media Player.

Probably. Lots of people have rips. Some are in lousy realplayer format, some are OK DivX. I've got a set on DivX that I really bigtime owe Expresionless that are ripped from the DVDs by some friends, and are thus top quality. Sadly, EOE is still a lousy .wmv .

I wouldn't pay money for rips. The point of fansubbed rips is they're free. They think people in the west should see it, they give it away. Nowadays they tend not to sub stuff that will eventually get western release - hence the huge delay in producing Hellsing, when Pioneer USA got it. It was finished in the end, but it didn't matter. Because it was shit.

Couple articles floating around these days about the role of fan sub, and if it really has a place anymore. I remember reading a thread over at the megatokyo.com forums that laid out a pretty decent arguement. Two main points,

1) There's a lot of shit getting released these days in the US. More then ever before. Since fansubs are only "legit" (i.e. ignored by the copyright holders) when they aren't licensed in the US. This limits the life span of the large majority of fansubs.

2) The ability to do fansubs has gotten so easy that to many people are doing it just to have the first release, and that many of these groups don't give a shit about quality. Resulting in a lot of crap fansubs diluting the market.

On the reccomendation side of things. I recently picked up the Trigun box set after reading a ton of glowing reviews. This seems to be somewhere between Cowboy Bebop (loved by all) and Neon Genesis (loved by most) in popularity. After watching the first DVD, I can see why.

The story's a western, set on an unnamed planet. Main charecter either has the quickest reflexes on the planet, or is just to stupid and lucky to get hurt. The show starts out as a comedy and then supposedly moves into more serious stuff near the end. Even after only seeing the first DVD, I can already highly reccomend this.

Oh, and I also recently picked up the first Excel Saga DVD. Not reccomended for people who aren't familiar with anime, but if you are, then you might enjoy this. Great parody of everything anime, and a lot of other stuff as well.

Interesting points. I wouldn't have a problem with ripped stuff in this case when the commercial option is dubbed VHS. There's no contest really.

But I think I'd still end up buying the DVD version (if they ever decide to release it in the UK). Despite the fears of the music/film industry, some of us do like to have the properly packaged product. Unless it's shit of course. Planet Of The Apes - I'm looking in your direction....

Thanks for that link videodrome.

I have to admit, I'm getting confused at what's out there tho. What's actually on the Second Impact box set?

I've also seen the DVD box set on Amazon US which looks like the business as it features the entire TV series. I'm looking at getting an NTSC/PAL all regions DVD player as well.

No doubt after I've done all that, there'll be an announcement about a UK release!

yeah. definitely.

the coolest thing about flcl is that it's fun no matter how you choose to approach it - you can both discuss it for hours afterwards AND have your 10 yr-old dragon ball z addict love it. (compare that with Lain, in which either your brain hurts real bad or you almost die of boredom with no shades of gray in between) It's got all that nerdy stuff - "open" plot, "nonlinear"-ly told, self-reference, parodies - from manga to south park, half of which I'm afraid I missed - phallic symbols abounding, phantastic/surreal elements, even a little of that cyborg/divine feel from NGE.

Oh, and the soundtrack is great. ^^

I'd have to heartily recommend Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis. It's a re-interpretation (i think) of Fritz Lang's 1920's film, and it's a total masterpiece. It may be seen as a little light and fluffy (no dismemberments or ballistic disembowelings), but the story is well-crafted, the characters are totally expressive and the soundtrack is phenomenal.

If your anime requires hefty militaristic violence, get your hands on Spriggan. While I'd hardly call it a masterpiece, the violence and action are first-rate (and brilliantly animated, in places).

All you need is the TV series box set that's already out, and the End of Evangelion movie that's coming out next month in the US.

Oh, and as a follow up, I finished watching Trigun, and it's a great series. Highly reccomended. Nice combination of comedy/western/moral story. With a few things to think about afterwards if you want.

New purchases for me are Yu Yu Hakusho and Escaflowne (TV series). Yu Yu's a fun series that Comedy Central is showing on Saturday nights now. Haven't watched Escaflowne yet, but I've been hearing so much about the movie that was just released on DVD thought I'd give the tv series a run through.

I think you might mean Cartoon Network rather than Comdey Central. Or does Comedy Central play it on Saturday nights as well? Because I know Cartoon Network does, and i haven't heard anything about Comedy Central...

Haven't seen anybody mention Metropolis yet. For the visuals alone, it's worth seeing.

I only just saw Princess Mononoke, and it's the best movie I've seen this year.

Really? Could have sworn that Metropolis has been mentioned six or seven times. May be I'm thinking of other threads.

I finally started watching Visions of Escaflowne this weekend. If you dig mecha and/or fantasy stuff, give it a look. The movie, which is a condensed version of the TV series, was just released on DVD in the US. BTW, this is from the same studio that created Neon Genesis, and was as big a hit when it came out.

Ok, a few titles that got away, just to lengthen the list and mixing a few oldies with the new stuff...

. Lupin Third and the Castle of Cagliostro - prize-winning in Cannes, this has to be one of the most perfect adventure capers ever done. All the best of Miyazaki's technique with a hold on the saccharine.
Would make a great live-action remake.
[Could be part of a series called "Tales of the Wolf" in the USA/UK, due to legal problems with the Lupin intellectual property/copyright.]

. Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heavens' Door - the first movie from the same staffthat did the excellent series. Extremely good.

. Arion - mythological rewrite from Yas, the guy that did the first Gundam character design. Old but still there with the best.

. Bella Donna - one of Tezuka's least known works, this one is pure dream-state storytelling. Lots of sexual imagery and angst, but visually striking - and it puts the father of Astroboy in perspective!

Enjoy!

First, there's now a thread over in comics for discussion Manga

Second, Lupin Third and the Castle of Cagliostro, is simply known as Castle of Cagliostro here in the US. Though I haven't picked it up, I've seen it on the shelf.

Third, anyone know when the Cowboy Bebop film is being released on DVD? I know it was showing at anime conventions awhile ago. I finally downloaded a fansub of it this weekend, and from what I've seen so far, it looks great.

Having now seen the entire Neon Genesis Evangelion series - and Death & Rebirth to boot - I'd stick this at the top of anyones list as a must-see option. This knocks the socks off any other anime stuff I've seen.

Absolutely incredible stuff that looks pretty standard anime fare from the outside, but is actually very, very layered and benefits from repeat viewing.

It falls apart at the end somewhat, but the Death & Rebirth film help to sort that out. Also run the film with the commentary on - lots of weird, interesting (and hilarious!) stuff on there.

Some of the images in this series are just breathtaking - and the use of long nothing-much-happens shots and the classical music... I could go on for hours.

I guess there's nothing else to do now but wait for a copy of End Of Evangelion....

EoE will impress you. As I said in the other thread, I just finished watching the commentary track last night.

Also, on the whole, "it looks normal at first" thread that gets thrown around. I don't know enough to verify this, but I've heard that the reason it looks so much like other stuff, is because so much that has come out since Evangelion is trying to look like Evangelion.

And to justify this being in this thread, I also finally broke down and picked up the Vision of Escaflowne movie (I've been trying to grab the series first, but...) The movie is another that is just breath taking in it's beauty.

Having only seen the first DVD of the TV series, I'm inclined to think the TV series will probably be better. Which supposedly boils down to having more time to tell the story and develop the themes. But, that's not to take away from the movie itself. Supposedly, it's been submitted for Oscar contention, and I wouldn't be surprised if it at least wins an animation award (unless it's beat by Spirited Away)

Story wise though, taking the mecha idea in putting it into a fantasy setting is something that I find interesting. The TV series seems to handle this better. Since they handle the mecha as a kind of mecha, the movie handles it in a more mystical manner.

All and all, I reccomend it to those who are already into anime (but who have probably already seen it) or those who are casual anime fans. People that don't like anime, might not be to impressed, but at the very least, it's pretty to look at.

There's a few other titles that I do want to check out, especially after reading the comments of some of the regulars on here. I'll be giving Cowboy Bebop a viewing this week.

I'm sure it's already been mentioned elsewhere, but Blood is another excellent title: beautiful animation and great atmosphere.

Right. Will write more later, but basically - Spirited Away was lovely. Charming, brilliant detail, and most fun to watch. OK, a slight problem with pacing by the end, and it rambled a little... but I grinned so much it was definitely worthwhile

Can the End of Evangelion DVD recently released be watched without watching all of the episodes?

For the fourth time:

No, no, no, no, no.

You could possibly watch it after Death and Rebirth, because that's a condensation of 26 episodes, but trying to condense 572 minutes of animation into 90 is just silly. I really wouldn't recommend starting with EOE. It will make NO SENSE. And you'll just come out going "dude, those Japanese cartoons never make sense!".

If you've seen it all, and see EOE, it still might not make sense, but it's more likely to.
