Has anyone considered linking THIS post to the posts on Byrne-world? Not that the posts would stay up long, but it's be funny to see the ripples when they realize they can't join in to defend their hero.

huh? why wouldn't they be able to join in? they can register here just as easily as we can register there.

i don't think attracting their ire or attention this way is a good idea.

I agree, SO not worth it. Why bring on a flame war that will just clutter up threads here? Those people might even try to hack Barbelith out of their fanatical devotion to JB.

I don't think they could register. BUT it's probably bent not to risk their ire. They're like the Borg or something. We'd be fucked.

But I do like to think that we're included whenever they go on about "other boards" dissing JB...

I thought that was a quote from Byrne, which would have been pretty terrifying. Fortunately, Byrne kinda tore the guy who wrote that a new one.

someting positive said about Byrne's behavior in this thread besides 'yeah, his X-Men, Superman, FF and Alpha Flight were good'. Glad to see conservative psycho Byrne defending gays. A nice change of pace.

Good to see Byrne coming out for "Gays" and then -- relief! -- reminding us he's not a Gay by posting up a picture of a girl with "huge natrual boobies".

Oh yes, John Byrne, wasn't he the one that wrote the 'Northstar is a fairy and has AIDS' storyline several reboots of Alpha Flight ago?

Jack Fear
10:56 / 24.01.05
Nope. That was Bill Mantlo.

During Byrne's original run, while it was strongly hinted that Northstar was gay (or bisexual, as he shared a house with a man and a woman), he was hale and hearty.

Mantlo introduced the diease angle, and IIRC his original plan was for it to prove to be AIDS. This was nixed by editorial, so Mantlo made Northstar a literal fairy, like from, y'know, Fairyland.

No, Northstar and his sis have been real fairies, of the pointy-ear variety, since way back in Alpha Flight days. I think it worked the other way around, that some wag decided that Northstar should be outed as the figurative fairy.

OK, this is verbatim from the site:

One Byrne-fool:
Let me give you an example a girl huge natrual boobies is abnormal, but it sure ain't wrong.

Cue John Byrne (HERO) posting a terrifying picture of some weird looking girl-child with enormous breasts, before uttering:

Definitely not wrong:

'natural booobies'!??! Christ you can almost hear him tugging on his old chap, his fingers barely able to type in the correct HTML..

Eeeeeuuussssshhhhhh.

why's that then sleaze? shit-talking about weirdo comic creators - swhat this bit of the forum was built for isnit? we are the letters page - so are they. it's all comics.

About that sleaze:

I think, it´s fascinating in a weird way, when somebody got "famous" and "respected", and then takes such a fall.

An example of what I mean:

In Germany, we had that actor that´s been really famous for decades, doing all kind of movies and shows. And then, he started drinking more and more, was all over the tabloids, then got sober again, then embarrassed himself again and again (for example, he let himself be photographed and interviewed by the yellow press, having an affair with a girl 1/3 his age in a hotel room). Finally, his wife put him in a hospital/nursing home. The tabloids started to do stories about that, too ("J appeals to his wife: get me outta here!"), but it got too sad even for them.

Of course, Byrne is even mediocre in the falling part.

I don't think shit-talking about comic creators was what this particular forum was built for - its lazy, trashy and all too easy - I'd much rather see more debate focused on the comics rather than close to 200 posts about comic creators saying stupid and/or ill advised things. There is probably even a case for moving threads like this into the conversation.

Haus of Mystery
09:44 / 26.01.05
Is that not over-moderation? Why does it matter? It's just one thread, and has entertained a few people at that. There's plenty else going on in the Comics forum, Sleaze.

' its lazy, trashy and all too easy '

personal value judgements, not facts. frinstance, diz's (largely fruitless) efforts, huggling the byrneians to death, indicated laziness? you really mean 'i don't like it', but i don't see why you feel that position should change to 'i don't want ANYONE to like it'. why can't you just ignore it? clearly a lot of people are enjoying it, and consider it relevant to how we look at and engage with this crazy world of comics we all love so much. start some other threads for debate 'focused on the comics' if you want to knock this one down the charts, or revive some old ones, see how they take.

I'd say this was the right place. I mean, there's a thread in Books on whether or not Burroughs was a misogynist... the difference being that there's more disagreement in that one. We're talking about a comics creator, after all... the bfact there are so many replies is more testament to the strength of feeling there is about his "madness". Yes, it may be mean and petty, but it's still about comics.

If you want discussion of his work, well, there's yr "New Topic" button right there.

Personally, I love this thread. But then, I'm both mean and petty.

This thread reads like an indulgance of the more petty drives people have. Knocking down an easy target and enjoying it at that. Not wrong, Lazy and base entertainment sure... not sure I would consider it misplaced. Thankfully this thread reads more like the exception of this place rather than a norm. Perhaps it's The Barbelith Comics Forum's "special needs child"

That's a dubious judgement. You're the indulgent able-bodied parent, and the thread is some kind of amusingly retarded kid? I'm sure that's potentially offensive on a few levels.

Why is John Byrne an "easy target"? He's a successful, wealthy, well-regarded (as his forum demonstrates) comic book professional. It's hardly bullying for a bunch of people on Barbelith to have a few yuks at his reactionary comments and inconsistent arguments. There's enough gush about "Grant" on this board -- an all-seeing deity to some fans, it seems -- to show that engagement with a comic pro's public persona isn't considered out of bounds or out of place.

Admittedly, this thread is a bit meta-textual in that it's talking about other online discussion, and I feel there's possibly some cowardice in mocking JB's fans when they don't know you're doing it and aren't offered a right to reply.

But apart from that, I don't see how it's argued that this doesn't belong on a forum for Comic Books.

Nobody's getting their stalk on. Leave this thread be - a lot of people seem to enjoy reading it, it's relevant to comics, and if you don't like it, don't read it.

Ridiculous figures as you aren't comparing like with like. Will Eisner is not managing a suck-up discussion board where he twists himself up in his own arguments on race and sexuality. John Byrne did not recently die. They are not remotely similar cases.
