Man, some folks loved that Whipping Boy book.

Maybe, it's just a collection of posts from his forum - the horror, the horror.

Fear Book was a very typical gore novel with nothing to recommend it, but the one thing that struck me was that he had one character who was horridly obese, had vile and disgusting hapbit, and was killed in the most visceral way.

Can you guess what hobby he had?

Byrne strikes me as a hack when it comes to comics in a industry that really doesn't need hacks anymore. From reading Fear Book it was AMAZINGLY apparent he hates his fanbase and thinks of them in the worst possible way.

Why do these bitter hacks do this though - why do they think that we care what their opinion on books they haven't read is?

It's funny that Byrne is now so bad, I remember that FF human torch's number one fan story as fondly as I remember the Animal Man Invasion cross-over issue, such a tragic, wonderful character piece - very real in a fantasy world.

Yeah, I found and re-read that one recently- still beautiful.

Hard to square that with today's Byrne, really.

hey, some people used to be great and have since become hacks. Witness Chris Claremont, Byrne himself (of course)...I'm sure we can think of others, both in the comics field and beyond. (In other fields, I used to love Phil Collins *ducks to avoid objects being thrown at him* and feel his earlier stuff holds up well, but of course we all know what route he took...)

Also thinking of Francis Ford Coppolla and Woody Allen as people who used to be great and have put out mostly junk in recent years... (and Allen has kind of gone a bit more nuts than usual in terms of marrying his adopted daughter)

But none of those I've listen argue and rant about crap on their online forums, so I guess Byrne really is the worst.

*coughcough* George Lucas ...

But... but Claremont's writing was always bollocks!
Okay, his plotting was great, but... you gotta admit, his dialogue was never exactly stellar. Nor even the sort of thing you could imagine being read out loud.

Hmm. the Lucas analogy... yeah, I can go with that. Would that it didn't hold up, but it does. Arse.

I saw the cover of the latest Doom Patrol in the comic store today. Man, what a crappy looking cover. A monkey could draw a better one. I was too scared to look inside.

speaking of Doom Patrol, i stumbled on this classic bit the other day:

"The saddest thing that has overcome the comicbook
industry is the utter lack of respect for the work of
others that has become something of a badge of
pride for certain "professionals". I have always had
one rule almost above all others: whatever is
happening in other titles is what I will use if I need to
reference those other titles, even if I don't like
what's happening. Others feel not so obligated,
apparently. I have lost count of the number of times
stories I have done -- even works currently in
progress -- have been torpedoed by other writers
being "cute". And, of course, in this InterNet Age
there are far too many pinheads who are quick to
seize upon any such "proof" that DC or Marvel are not
"supporting" my work.

feh

...

Face it -- for the most part, when you say "comicbook
professional" what you mean is "unprofessional
yahoo who is more concerned with making a name
for himself and masturbating all his emotionally
retarded fans than paying any attention to the history
of the titles, the characters, or the work done by other
creators."

And we wonder why comics are in trouble?"

what triggered Byrne's rant? the fact that a magazine cover in Identity Crisis made reference to pre-reboot Doom Patrol characters, blatantly disregarding the fact that they no longer existed in the new DP continuity as established by his current run on Doom Patrol.

so, yes, he's ranting about the fact that other writers have the temerity to ignore the hard work he's been doing ignoring the work of others.

whoo. that's a classic, even for him.

Diz, whilst your little project offers up the odd nugget of voyeuristic delight, I have to ask, why, man, why?

Byrne is a sad, stupid old man, who really isn't worth giving the time of day. And as for the Byrne Robotics members, anyone that wastes hours of their life posting on his sycophantic little board needs their head checking.

Get out while the getting's good, I say.

I say keep up the work Diz... you actually got quoted by JB himself... though he really didn't say much did he.

It sure seems like work to not just spam that board with "John Byrne's a big dick!"

beyond that those posts and the ensuing dialogue makes for some entertaining reading...

In a totally selfish vein, I say keep it up, Diz. I'm loving reading it, especially because Byrne seems to be so much less coherent and more biased than his fans. If I read that thread and didn't know it was Byrne posting, I would think: "Oh, the local troll. Where's my damn ignore function?"

You're a much better man than I am Diz. I don't think I'd be able to handle it. But I can't stop reading that bloody message board. Want to know what Barbelith is like on Bizarro World? Now we do.

I'll be curious to see what, if anything, Byrne says on the advent of Will Eisner's passing. Given that board's tendencies, the topic mightn't even come up. Mind, I can't be bothered to look for myself, but if one of you masochists spot something untoward, let us know.

Of course it does, but surely you're not arguing that Diz is going to change anything over there? And, besides, I reckon it's pretty disingenuous to suggest that we (Diz's audience) are getting anything out of this other than voyeuristic thrills.

Don't get me wrong. I approve of Diz's intentions, I just think that trying to fight a board, however warmly, that is geared towards sycophancy, and is lead by such an idiot is, well, hopeless.

i tried to join up yesterday and thank jolly JB for finally portraying the UK properly in a Superman book, y'know the john cleese one, but they won't let you in unless you've got some geekmail address or something, i don't now. apparently the board's been trolled a bit in the past, can't think why. i was gonna have smithers as my identipic and everything. diz, get yourself an identipic and have it be smithers, and try to type 'Mr Byrnes' as oft as possible. keep up the good work.

See, Boboss? How could that not be a good idea. We don't want to change anything, just cause trouble. And play with a mind that is slowly unravelling, like kittens with a ball of string.

No, my fren, that's what you want to do, Diz has other things on his mind, like cuddling him until he gives in and learns that there is no fight. No fight at all.

Personally I just want to punch his face.

LOL.

I fall mostly into the "1/3 of the time it's fun to make fun of him, 2/3 of the time I think of Byrne as a sad, pathetic old washed-up hack I used to admire who I don't want to waste energy thinking about" camp.

I never suggested either...

On the topic of changing anything. Seems to me that, in itself, is a dubious endevor. Is it incorrect to say people will spend their free time with stuff they are famulair with and enjoy? I don't particularly see a need to change anything there.
That said, I think Diz is doing a great job of creating a believable fiction suit (and must have some interest in cultivating that ability) and I applaud it's use in what seems like a challenging environment. Much more challanging than attempting such "subversion" here. If other posters are attracted towards doing the same, good for them. If, eventually one or more of the er... native posters end up on Barbelith enjoying the dialogue here and (presumably) contributing... hurray for everyone involved.

I don't see any wrong in the entertainment connected with watching this unfold. Hell; how is reading posts here on Barbelith any less of a voyeuristic thrill? Sure one could say posting turns this passtime into interaction and contribution but I suspect "we" read more threads than we post to . . . ain't not'n wrong witdat either.

As for JB himself. I too was a fan in my youth and as an adult am equally disillusioned with his shortcommings. The same with the Lone Ranger & Tonto.

Is it any better that we have 4 plus pages devoted to bashing this person at all? How long can we collectively post our complaints about this craftsman and what he produces? Is that even healthy?

Tricks, I understand that there are possible desirable outcomes, I just don't see them happening.

But I suppose JB just brings out the grouch in me. The man is a phenomenal dick and those boards are, frankly, moronic (just read their policy threads). I just can't be bothered to engage with him in any way whatsoever, and I fear that doing so - even vicariously - just fuels his rather silly little fire. I mean, who wants to enter into one of Byrnes' absurd dialectics?

I'm sure I'll cool down in a few days and get on with watching the spectacle like everyone else.

It’d be double the fun if they did. It’s a crying shame they can’t. Surely Barbelith can tear these idiots to pieces and send them running home, crying all the way.

Actually, I’m concerned for some of these poor fools if they ever find out Diz has been lying to them all this time. They’ve really trusted you man. Lets hope they never find out you secretly like the Morrison Doom Patrol, or they’ll feel *gasp* so betrayed.

12:06 / 07.01.05
OK, i understand that this little crusade of mine is both petty and kind of pointless. i acknowledge this. i'd like to think i'm doing something positive, not so much in terms of changing JB's mind on anything but at least in terms of opening up space for a little wider dialogue than people usually get over there. there are some people over there who seem inclined to vary a little from the party line, and if i can clear a little room for them to open up a bit more, i think that's a nice thing. however, i'm under no illusions about the ultimate futility of this endeavor, and i'm aware it's a little pathetic to even be bothering. i'm sure i will grow out of it and move on at some point soon.

if it does blow up, however, i'm sure that the worst that will happen is that i get banned. there's no real way they could trace me back to Barbelith.
