I've really enjoyed reading the mission directives for the IRL raid and the guidance for protests. It's good sensible stuff, particularly for 4n0ns who might not be the kind of persons who get out much or function effectively IRL in a general sense.

On the Florida IRC last night, there was a 17 year old trying to hitch a ride to one from about 20 minutes away. Which is kind of cute on one level, and really inspirational on another.

I've also just learned that there's a Critical Mass Miami on the same weekend.

I was on the subway with a scientologist yestereday. I looked at the book the girl next to me was reading, was all about clear and vitamins, so I knew what it was. I just asked her if she knew who Lisa McPherson was. "No." So I told her she should read up on her.

Taking it to the steets. or subways, whatever. I am now officially a "Supressive Person."

SPs are out-ethics!

There's a message board for protests near you!

I also saw a nice idea about giving Valentines to people going in and out of centers on Feb 14.

Since secret admirers are always anonymous anyway, and it might make someone smile.

Apology here...

Of course, since the whole point of the 4n0ns is that they're anyone, an apology from one doesn't mean an apology from all, and a wrong action isn't a wrong action by all...

It's basically the EXACT OPPOSITE of the Borg.

It's the same reason why people think the *chans are by nature racist, homophobic and misogynistic- because some of their members are. Not all, but minimal moderation means those who are get as much airtime as they want.

It has its upsides and its downsides. Let's hope the upsides outweigh the downsides this time (to be honest, the fact that so many other non-chan sites have got behind this suggests that's maybe happening- a lot of the more obnoxious posters on the *chans are not into the War On $cientology at all. This seems to have spread OFF, rather than FROM, the *chans- partly because, well, I don't really know any of the others that well, but 4chan technically has a "no raids" policy- one which is rarely enforced, but I think "raid on $ci" talk is being deleted. I doubt this is because of any love of $cientology; I saw a video of Moot at Otakon 2006 where he expressed his dislike of, among other things, raids).

As someone in the business, holy shit - Woman's Day is crediting Anonymous with breaking up Tom & Katie.

Happy Imbolc. Gotta see what the *real* tabs are gonna do with this one....

Well, it's not so much what they do with it- ANYTHING they do with it is publicity for Anon if the "war" is mentioned...

...unless they just go with the "videos made Cruise look mental" angle. Which, to be fair, is a pretty reasonable angle to go for.

Here's hoping it's the former, though.

...ah, just noticed the actual article doesn't mention the "war" at all.

Two of my greatest pleasures in life at the moment is this bonkers stuff and series 5 of the Sopranos (i'm late and playing catch-up again)

But how nuts is this stuff!!! I swear its what the internet was invented for!

Irony:

Scientology sued by Danny Elfman (no relation to Scientologist Jenna).

That music in the background of the Tom Cruise video? From Mission Impossible. Used without permission.

He owns the arrangement. You could get busted for using someone's modern remix of the 1812 Overture, I'd imagine, even though they didn't own the tune.

Yeah - I was wondering if Lalo Schifrin (who wrote it) was a Scieno. He's also supposed to be zealous in guarding his copyright, although I might be getting him confused with Neal Hefti (did the Batman theme). Anyway, if they're using the *actual recording*, then yes, Elfman owns it. ASCAP (or BMI or whichever publishing company) collects a licensing fee from Elfman for his cover, which is why these suits happen.

Anyway, I just logged on tonight because this YouTube thing has taken a turn for the bizarre. We are Christians. 1 billion strong....

Erm... some Christians are okay, you know... let's not go calling the entire religion greedy and stuff, shall we? (edited to add- actually, you may not have been being sarcastic, in which case, disregard. I'm drunk).

And let's face it, the anons didn't exactly start this FOR GREAT JUSTICE. This entire war started for the lulz. The *chans are, for a large part, amoral sociopaths. It just so happens they picked a good target this time.

Just about to hop on a bus now... I have my video camera at the ready, and my V mask is all good to go.

Someone emailed me what was supposed to be a link to pictures from the Australian and New Zealand demos, but the site appears to be down. If I can get hold of them I'll bung them up.

That image made my heart flip.

One of my friends (aquaintances really) is going to Cardiff today for an Anon Protest (protest? demo?). So there is apparently something happening there. I've been informed that he's the person who got the entire campus banned from the chan boards - by posting about this, unsurprisingly. (We all share one IP address, of course.)

Good luck to everyone who goes!

That image made me feel a bit sick. I wonder if she did save her son or what the story is there. Has her son been kidnapped? Does she have no contact with her kid at all now? It's a very emotive image to be sure. But i tend to distrust those types of images by instinct really. I was going to go up into town and have a look at what is going on at the church but i think i've left it a bit late. I might go out and throw a brick through another window instead though.

That was, to put it mildly, a success- somewhere in the region of 300 people at its peak, at the main headquarters, and then a lot of public interest outside the recruitment office. Leaflets were handed out, passers-by's questions were answered, lulz were had. There was even a guy with a stereo Rickrolling them... and there was something pretty awe-inspiring about hearing the first Message To Scientology being broadcast from somewhere in the middle of a crowd, all masked.

I got a shit-load of footage, but most of it's undoubtedly going to be really shaky because I had an awful hangover. Once I've found some that's YouTube-worthy, I'll post the link.

It was weird hearing all the memes spreading into real life, though... "Anonymous, what is your profession?" shouted through a megaphone, and responded to with a crowd of "HRGH!!!"s, "The Cake Is A LIE!!!". The slogans being chanted were a mixture of sensible anti-$ci stuff and memes which the poor $cis must have had no clue about whatseoever. ("Tom Cruise hates mudkips", anyone?). And combinations of the two. One minute everyone's singing Happy Birthday Lisa (McPherson), or chanting "why are they dead?", the next there's a bunch of masked Anons dancing to Chocolate Rain or the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, or chanting "should have bought a dog!". There were a lot of press there- I got interviewed by a freelance guy, but there were BBC camera crews and stuff, especially when we moved to Tottenham Court Road. It was all pretty good-natured, too, considering the vast majority of London representatives of the Internet Hate Machine were probably in attendance.

It was still all going on when I left (had no dogsitter so came home to see Sheena), which was about an hour or so ago.

The cops didn't seem too bad, either- saw one guy possibly being arrested, but don't know what for or if he was even one of us. When we were at the main church, their spokeswoman (I've seen her defending them on Richard & Judy- it's on YouTube somewhere) came out to ask the police to move us on, and was told, politely but firmly, that we had every right to protest outside their building and there wasn't shit she could do about it.

tl;dr- this afternoon Anonymous proved to have a power level of over 9000.

Anyone else go, or got any info about the other protests around the world?

HM VI- From what I've read, the child of the woman I posted was in the custody of her husband, who was raising him as Scientologist despite her objections. I don't know any more, but she apparently was interviewed by the mainstream media in Australia, so we might see some more info.
