So what I'm saying is that after next week's episode expect the casulaty list to read '7 people and a budgie called Kevin'.

Crossed my mind, and it would be very cool, but I'm not betting on it.

Well - RTD said in the podcast that the return of the master was something for the next production team to worry about.

Which implies that season 4 might well be RTD's last.

I think he is also attempting to imply no master next year - but since RTD has lied about the master in the past I wouldn't entirely discount the possibility of a masterful return next year - possibly with daleks...

Martha's coming back during the middle of the fourth series and will star in three episodes of Torchwood. Hurray for her return to Doctor Who! I'm a little iffy on the Torchwood side of things, but as long as she stays away from the rapist, the various psychopaths and the butler, then all is well.

So, given the news in the podcast about a big special guest announcement for the Christmas special, and given that Nine was on the titanic, think there's a snowball's chance in hell that it's Eccelston?

I wouldn't have thought he'd do it, but... after the big to do about wanting to avoid genre TV, he turned around and did Heroes.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
05:07 / 02.07.07
It'll probably be something like Lilly Allen playing the Captain of the Titanic or the Scissor Sisters playing the ship's band, which would rock actually.

Martha coming back for long chunk: good. Martha going to Torchwood: ho-hum. New companion for all of series 4? Ho-hum.

That said, two proper companions... it's been a while since that. Could be fun.

Right now, I"m just very glad they haven't axed a great character that got better as the season went on, and got better despite the dodginess of the writing at points.

Mind you, after a year of yomping across post-Master-ocalypse Earth, she's probably over-qualified for the team.

News of Martha in Torchwood actually gives me vague hope for the second season. Her ability to cut right through the bullshit will hopefully leave Owen a bleating mess on the floor.

It does kind of assume that Torchwood writers pay more attention to story arcs outside of their own episodes/shows than they did first time around.

So, Kylie Minogue for the christmas special? That could be fun, actually.

Oh please let her be the vortex hopping daughter of Leela and that Time Lord fella she copped off with.

Knives! Skimpy tribal wear! Janus thorns! A cover of "My Heart Will Go On."!

Ohpleaseohpleaseohplease.

I really hope that when Martha returns in series 4, she does so with an attitude that reflects her decision to walk away and her experience during the Year That Never Was (YTNW) - including giving the new companion (who ideally should not be from 2007-9, unless it's Sally Sparrow) a bit of a warning about the Doctor and his ways.

I agree Fly, I want a companion from the far future who isn't all googly eyed and "I've been to SPAAAACE".

"...unless it's Sally Sparrow."

Or Ms. Saxon

Sadly, I fear we are both to be frustrated in our Companion wishes.

And Kylie? Man, I was really hoping for some Two Doctors action.

Kylie is a fantastic choice. That makes me so happy!

Although I would be over the moon if Sally Sparrow made a comeback (I'm still thinking of starting that fancying fictional characters thread) I would really like the addition of a new companion to change the dynamic so that not everyone wanted to fuck the Doctor. I think that's the issue that needs addressing here.

I misread this as a two doctor foursome with Kylie. Presumably there would be an A.N.Other Mary Sue to make up the numbers...

Or Ms. Saxon

Oh God yes.

'Doctor...I want to atone for killing the Master...I know that what I've done is wrong, but I think by helping you I can make things better. Doctor, I'm so, so sorry...can you forgive me?'

Doctor moves in to hug Lucy, take the shot from over the Doc's shoulder, and, unbeknown to the Doctor, she smirks, knowingly...

What if the real enemy was inside all along?

Evil Scientist
07:14 / 03.07.07
Doctor Who goes a bit Torchwood.

Surely the finest thing in the world would be for Kylie to stay on for the season. She's stuper-rich so I'm sure she could merrily take on a low-wage acting job for a year just to make me happy.

She'd do that for me wouldn't she?

No, but Cathernie Tate would.

But with Katherine Tate, I guess it'll be the end of the companion mopping around "in Love" for a year.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
06:12 / 04.07.07
Nononononononono! You can't do that! It's not fair!

I suppose it may be a positive to the next season being the last, I can't understand why they'd get Catherine Tate for the entire season and Frema for only four episodes. The world's gone topsy-turvey.

The Strobe
06:26 / 04.07.07
Totally. That's just... shit.

This news has wiped the grin that has been plastered across my face since The Thick of It last night, off.

I am now worryingly close to a scowl.

She was amusing (for the first time in living memory) in the Christmas special, but only because I knew we were only going to have to put up with her for one episode. Any more than that and I fear my head may explode.

I think the thing that rankles me is that I can see exactly why they're doing it; I may find Catherine Tate as funny as discovering my mother has a raging case of Syphilis, but the vast majority of the Who target demographic love her. It's an RTD final-season ratings grab; with the one upside being that we'll get a few proper episodes at the end when Freema's back, once they've sucked in the new Tate-loving viewers, so they can claim to both got more viewers and made good Who.

*sigh*

I am now scowling. Must. Think. Of. Cheese. Boy.

I'm going to suspend judgement. They can't have her trying to be funny for the whole season. And as a straight actor, who knows what she is like? Not me.

"Fucking Christbiscuits, Martha. She's doing my bloody head in! Look, I'm sorry about everything, OK? I'll fix it! With tounges! Just please, come back before I smash her head repeatedely off the TARDIS console! OK? Call me back. Ta."

"When in doubt, wait and see" is always the best rule of thumb in these situations. As has been said, Donna neither fancies nor even particularly looks up to the Doctor, but she does recognise his occasional tendency to be cruel, which would make her a very different type of companion than any we've seen in the new seasons thus far (Adam excepted - did you know an episode of next season of Torchwood is called 'Adam'?). The Doctor has had companions with whom he had a somewhat prickly and difficult relationship before, just not before the show's regeneration.

I actually think IIV has hit on the most obvious storytelling explanation. Martha's exit seemed to me to be written to make us think both "I guess that's what she needs to do" and "don't let her get away, you fooool!" What I'd like to see when she returns is the Doctor being wildly enthusiastic about having her back, and wanting it to last a while, and for Martha to be a lot less keen.

Plus, if you have people thinking of Martha Jones as the better or even "real" companion, all kinds of interesting storytelling possibilities open up. It's one thing to have a companion whose relationship with the Doctor is prickly and difficult - but what if it was stretched past that, to the point where a companion and the Doctor disagreed so much that they parted ways in a more dramatic way - they betrayed him, or got themselves killed? I'm not saying that's going to happen, but it's a possibility once you stop treating a full-time companion as such a beloved character.

Heh, Donna Noble as Jason Todd to the Doctor's Batman.

Although I'm not massively in love with the character it was only one episode so there's definite room for her to improve with a little travelling. I'm just a little disapointed that they're not trying something new (I'd quite like to see someone from the distant future or the past travelling with the Doc, but we've already established I have a Leela fetish who was a little of both).
