Also I bring you this gem of a translated doujinshi created in response to the small amount of info that we have concerning the proposed third Bleach movie.

As well as this rather wonderful essay on Feminism in Bleach which I thought was extremely well written and which I, mostly, agree with.

That essay on feminism on bleach was cool, i dont really deeply think about the series, but everything the writer posted made a lot of sense in retrospect.

I really love this series to bits and its great to see how much other people get out of it.

I did enjoy the toyed-with notion that, despite being in theory more powerful than her, Ichigo could have his ass handed to him quite readily by Soi Fong since he's not used to her fighting style.

Does it make me a bad person if I admit to watching the scene where Soi Fon kicks the crap out of Ichigo three times in a row?

I loved that scene too. It's not that he's unused to hand-to-hand combat... I thought that was one of Soi Fong's nasty little conversational jabs, overstating his lack of a response to her. Fist fighting was all he used to do after all, and he rather easily took out Chojiro, Omaeda and Isane bare-handed right before Soi Fong's eyes when he rescued Rukia. His heart wasn't in the fight against her and Ichigo probably thinks of himself as the White Knight Protector of Women. I doubt his fragile male ego would want to see himself as anything else. Continuing the line of thought from Maat's link, while Bleach's sexism is arguable I doubt that Ichigo as a character is without his prejudices in that department (see his patronising of Rukia when they first break into Las Noches and him blaming himself when Grimmjow injured her). Plus Soi Fong's style is unique to the 2nd Division, who he has never had to fight before, and while things would probably have gone very differently had this become a proper fight I'm in agreement with Transfer: that type of fan-pleasing enquiry will go unexplored.

Although why on earth he didn't kick off big time during the scene at the Captain's meeting I have no idea. Surely since Kuchiki pwns everyone in noble ranking then Bya would have been the obvious choice to sort this mess out?

Byakuya? Kicking off big time in front of his peers? Filler writers would never have the balls to allow that, as such a moment of allowing the mask to slip would have to come right at the end of his character arc in the comic. I rather like this new Byakuya, who in keeping with his depiction in the manga will allow himself to appear to be his old strict self-hating rule-following self but will happily dispatch Renji in secret, or who will assist his Lieutenant and sister in invading Hueco Mundo while appearing to follow orders, or who will take a hands-off approach to an adoptive Kuchiki Clan member who is taking it upon herself to upset the rather powerful and prestigious neighbours. Captain Kuchiki these days is defiantly his own man but he'll be damned if he lets the rest of the world see it. I rather like that the only person who he has allowed past the mask is Hanataro, because he knows that the 4th Squad member has a similar strength of feeling for a certain someone... but I'm now coming close to spoiling moments from the comic that haven't yet seen adaptation.

I'm rather enjoying the filler again, after a few wobbles. The far-too-quick wedding set up was shonky beyond belief, but Amagai, Soi Fong and Byakuya are getting some great moments in the aftermath. Particularly Soi Fong, it's been good to see her away from her relationship with Yoruichi... the obvious choice for filler writers would have been to play out those moments between them again and again, but it's much nicer to actually see her being a bad-ass and doing her job.

Another enjoyable filler. This time it's Kira getting a chance to shine, kicking all kinds of ass against the weird anti-Zanpakuto ninja. Kubo's bound to handle him well in the upcoming manga issues, but this is a lovely treat.

184: That was great, besides the off-screen backtracking on the Gotei 13 conflicts. I actually found myself shouting at the screen during the Kira/Kifune fight, cheering at the former's totally unexpected kidou counter and yelling at him to kick that nasty motherfucker's ass. Kira has been unreservedly brilliant throughout this story.

Has there been a change in the creative staff? Some of the keyframe shots were beautiful in this story, I was struck by how Ukitate, Kyoraku and Kenpachi have never looked better in the anime. There's some lovely detailed work in there.

Astounding. The Shinigami Cup Golden for 185 features possibly the first true statement ever to come from the mouth of Ichimaru Gin. And it's a rather exciting prospect... that the action will soon be heading back to Hueco Mundo. Looking at the amount of story left we can only have a few more to go on this arc, maybe a month at most.

While it's deeply moronic that the doll would have fooled anyone (did they forget about gigai?), the outcome to the Kira/Kifune fight was exactly what I wanted. No ambiguity, no winning by default. The Bakkuto devours Kifune after Kira delivers the decisive final blow. Kira's lines about being traitorous and spitting on your friends rang true in the context of everything he's been through and his statement that his was the greater resolve because he was more congruent in himself and accepted responsibility were a brilliantly judged addition to Kubo's long running investigation of how and why people seek power. I nearly cheered when he told his opponent "You can't beat me if all you desire is power." In almost any other series it would have been throwaway battle dialogue, but it resonates with the themes that have been painstakingly constructed throughout the canon material to the extent that this single line was what decided the fight.

If Kira had lost then the entire filler arc would have been a write-off, no question.

Elsewhere, I couldn't give a shit about the outcome of Amagai vs Hitsugaya, but Rukia vs Matsumoto is an incredibly interesting prospect due to them being two characters who have never previously been directly contrasted (let alone in battle) and because Rukia deserves to have her power tested against one of the more powerful and principled Lieutenants. I really hope that Yamamoto's new orders are delayed so this fight isn't cut too short.

Having had enormous amounts of fun finding the images for the updated opening post (kept forgetting important characters, there are still loads that I've left out... also a photo of my drum kit is on the second page of Google image search results for "Madarame Ikkaku"), I thought it would be fun to keep this thread alive until the return of the canon material by linking to all our favourite Bleach cosplay shots. Nel

Ulquiorra

Halibel

Ishida (frighteningly accurate, this one)

Rukia

The Nakamakuras

Mayuri

Soi Fong 1, 2, 3 (also frighteningly close to how you'd imagine)

Great recreation of one of the classic splash pages

Those are all terrific. I particularly love the expressions on Mizuiro and Keigo in the sixth link down - some cosplayers do a scarily good job of embodying the characters they're dressed as, don't they. This picture from the same album is great too - check out the Unohana and Kenpachi for textbook facial expressions.

Hmph, it turns out I had less than I thought; but anyway -

Another Halibel. Epic underboob/fake tan/stylish zanpakutou

Cirucci Thunderwitch

The Espada and the Big Three

Madarame. Embarrassed cosplayer... legendary bankai

It's a shame we're not talking about Death Note or Code Geass, as those shows tend to inspire cosplay which verges on indecently good.

The release schedules for region 2 DVD and localised manga tankobon (if I'm using the word correctly) could, quite easily, drive someone batty.

They run at around four to six months between volumes. With the manga, this seems to be the worldwide norm for the translated volumes - the US is apparently no further ahead, or at least a cursory comparison of Amazon.co.uk versus Amazon.com would seem to indicate thusly, in their release dates.

In fact, the Region 1 DVDs appear to be only slightly ahead, and released in much smaller doses. Even so, it's going to be an awful - long - time before the whole series is collected and released on mass-market dvds.

I read the manga online (and feel slightly guilty about it) because I know I won't be seeing the issues put up at the moment for between one and two years in print, and I've watched some of the filler online, but I'm very dumbly ethical about torrenting and downloading, leaving me quite far behind - a state which I decry, but live with. Especially when you consider that the manga's doing a hell of a lot better than Yotsuba&!.

Please accept my apologies for rambling; in the ranks of complaints, manga release schedules don't rank highly, of course!

One thing, though; did I miss something, or has there been a semantic shift online between originally calling Hirako Shinji and his ilk the vaizards and now calling them the 'visoreds'? Wikipedia says yes, and it makes a sort of linguistic sense, but is this a necessary anglicisation, or not?

I'll get back to Shiny's post... in the meantime I'll add that there are a lot of Ikkaku's bankai cosplayers (because it's one of the only ones that's achievable), and all the attention to detail in the blade-making is generally fantastic and makes my heart warm.

You'll like it even more when the second amended version goes through. There were four MASSIVE character oversights on my part (not including the hundred or so relatively minor oversights).

Essentially, it's not a decent opening post if it doesn't have Ikkaku, Yumichika, Keigo and Tatsuki.

I'll get back to Shiny's post...

No real need, chief. My moaning about release schedules is pretty irrelevant, and Ignacio has made a fascinating point regarding the linguistics.

There has already been some discussion of the exoticisation of romance languages or cultures within Bleach and Animé as a whole - Hellsing springs to mind - but I do find it fascinating, and Ignacio's take on Menos Grande solved something that bugged me for a long time, in terms of 'Less Big'.

Less involved is the usage of German for the Quincy techniques and weapons, but that may be something that may be explored or entirely disregarded later on.

The Vizard / Vaizard / Visored thing only intrigues me because it's a translation that makes semi-perfect linguistic sense - in Japanese, it's listed as it's spelling in the manga meaning "Masked Army", it links to the English 'vizard', apparently an archaic word for mask, and has recently been utlised as 'visored', i.e. one who wears a visor, or, obviously, a mask.

The word Vaizard didn't make much of an impression when I first saw it - I thought of it as a context-specific non-literal translation, in the same way I thought of Shinigami, Zanpakuto or the legion of other terms that are not necessarly directly translated because they work better as 'new vocabulary'. But now, seeing vaizard as visored is just an odd little touch that makes the translation-process-lover in me sit up and be interested.

Which possibly means I should get out more.

Also, yes, Post One now rocks!

So I watched the filler, because it was there, basically. And it was very filler-ey, but better on the whole than the soul-crushing Bound arc and a lot of the other filler, episode 132 notwithstanding.

I really like the filler Captain, he's goofy, charming and genuinely likable, and he has a great look. The seafoam blue lining of his Captain's cloak is a fantastic touch, and his zanpaktoh's shikai is suitably cool and powerful-looking. He had great scenes with Kyouraku and Ukitake (who I adore) so he's a home run for me.

Also great has been all of the love Kira has gotten. He's been just dead on in-character the entire time, and I've loved every minute of it. Kifune was by no means a great villain ("I'm evil because I want power!" Never seen that before...) but he was really hateable, and that's all that matters in the end. Kira got to beat the living hell out of him, and I was cheering for him the entire time. That fight was ten kinds of great. Totally agree with Seth though, it would have been a waste of time and a tremendous disappointment if Kira had lost. I had no interest in seeing Ichigo or somebody else fighting Kifune after how nasty he was to Kira. Turned out awesome, though.

All of the Soul Society stuff was pretty great, honestly. And it just served as a terrible, terrible reminder of how awful the other storyline has been. Princess Whatsherface is every bit as annoying and unlikeable as Amagai is endearing. I just wanted Ichigo to tell her to shove it and leave her to the lame ninjas so we could get back to Kira. The clumsy attempts of the writing staff to get the viewer to like her just irritated me more. "Sure she's spoiled and bossy and idiotic, but here's why you should like her anyway! It's so hard being that rich!" they say to me. "Not buying it," says I. Especially after the reveal that she *gasp!* knew who was sending the lame ninjas all along! ...And still snuck off by herself to go to a fucking tea party.

Although that did lead to a gratuitous Zaraki Kenpachi cameo, which is always welcome in my world. He shows up to walk around, kill a ninja and then say "I don't even know what I'm doing here, either." It was fantastic.

As for where we're at now, at least Princess Obnoxious and her stooges are offscreen, so we're dealing with characters I like. I'm looking forward to both of the good-guy fights that are imminent. I like Hitsugaya, and particularly his fight scenes, and I want to see what they cooked up for Amagai's Bankai. Matsumoto and Rukia is going to be quality too, for all the reasons Seth mentioned. Still, I'm fresh off of the amazing Ichigo/Grimmjow fight and rewatching the Rukia/Aaroniero one, so I'm going to have to keep my expectations low to be able to enjoy them. I think I can do that. I have some feeling invested in all of the participants, unlike the double-episode snoozefest of battles against the lame ninja leader and his nearly-as-lame henchmen.

So anyway, good filler on the whole, but it was disappointing to stay away from the show for months to build up a stack of episodes to watch, and then have 80% of them be filler. *Sigh*

Oh, also a public service announcement. The essay on feminism in Bleach that Maat linked to is very good, but it is also full of SPOILERS for those of us who don't read the manga. I found something out that I'm really pissed that I know, and I'd hate for that to happen to somebody else.

Whoops, sorry Jake.

Have a Bleach LOLCAT by way of a sorry.

In regards to the recent episode I think Ichigo's response at the end pretty much covers my thoughts as well. That and regardless of how much I love Hisagi being badass I really don't think either Matsumoto or Rukia require saving from a bunch of Fail!Ninjas.

In my head there is a missing scene just after Hisagi arrives where Rukia rolls her eyes and Matsumoto smacks him upside the head with the hilt of her zanpaktou.

Also, WTF was the scene where all the men cheered when Byakuya was on the balcony? Was that because he was leading them on the assault or because he's exceptionally pretty or because they all finally had something to do?

Possibly all three?

One thing that really stood out in this episode was the fact that Ichigo apparently has no problem with killing people anymore. The first few times he was technically OK since the filler ninjas were just coming back to life again, but the three guys he took out at the end sure seemed dead to me.

Also, unless there's some twist other than "OMG Amagai was the bad guy ALL ALONG!" in the next episode, this entire arc is more evidence of Yamamoto's complete incompetence in running soul society. How many evil captains are they going to hire before he starts catching on? It would actually be pretty cool if the theory that he's the real villain of the series was correct, but I doubt they'd reveal something like that in the filler.

Welcome back to the thread, Jake. Pull up a cushion and try not to spill your drink over Ma'at's big book of pairings. And if you've not already done so, DON'T click on Seth's or my cosplay photo links because I'm fairly sure some of the spoilers you're trying to avoid are among them.

This episode was rather more win than some recent installments, what with Hisagi's heroic entrance (bet you he'd been planning it out to impress Matsumoto), the return of Madarame's happy-making 'Ora ora ora ora oraaaa!!!' battlecry and a nice little one-two from Kyouraku and Ukitake. Although I wish this storyline could have begun and ended without Yoruichi treading on Soi Fong's airtime yet again - just what is she doing there anyway?

Also, unless there's some twist other than "OMG Amagai was the bad guy ALL ALONG!" in the next episode, this entire arc is more evidence of Yamamoto's complete incompetence in running soul society.

I'm anticipating that all Yamamoto's and Byakuya's talk this week of the untouchability of the Kasumi-Ooji's is preamble to revealing that Amagai was running a sting operation on their illegal weapons business under the C-C's aegis, and that Kifune going Radio Rental was an unintended bit of collateral loss. Not that that makes a lot of sense plotwise, but it does allow that trivial plot point of 'who were the three captains who nominated this guy anyway?' from the early part of this storyline to be tied up, if Yamamoto and the Gotei 13 old guard were behind it all - still, it's a pretty complicated and messy way to do Soul Society's dirty laundry.

If the above can be sorted out in one or two episodes, we can get back to the canon material, and some of the weirdest stuff Bleach has ever done....

Madarame's happy-making 'Ora ora ora ora oraaaa!!!' battlecry

I love that! And it works for me I think, because it translates into portuguese as 'Well well well well weelllll!!!', which is a bit of a funny thing to observe probably, but well a lot of Bleach manga commentary posts emerge on a Monday, which is bridge night so I'm always a little tipsy.

Good grief that sounds perverse. Oh, wait..

Filler makes no sense plotwise. I bet Captain Tuning Fork is Ebil and Yama always suspected him, his Lovely Assistant and the Ooogie Family and so got him appointed Capt in order to bring him and the Oogies down.

Either Yama or Ukitake/ Shunsui will then finish Capt Tuning Fork off thus making filler arc entirely pointless fluff and usefully resetting everything ready for manga storyline to restart.

Also, I thought it was obvious that Bya was one of the Captains who nominated Tuning Fork due to that really filthy look he gives him as he leaves the first Captain's meeting at the start.

Can I write the next filler storyline? Please? I could do a much better job and there would be 100% less annoying children/Fail!ninjas and 100% more topless Renji and Matsumoto.

MOAR canon story NAO PLS. Those who know me well and who read the manga know what scenes I am waiting for. Be warned that I shall probably explode with glee when they are animated.

My god... the SQUEEING. Oh to be a popular male voice actor and make entire conventions of BL-crazy girls faint with excitement with just a murmur of my deliciously sensual and refined voice.

Can I write the next filler storyline? Please? I could do a much better job and there would be 100% less annoying children/Fail!ninjas and 100% more topless Renji and Matsumoto.

A fully offtopic equal-opportunities harem/fanservice alternate Bleach occasionally haunts my fevered mind... come to think of it, short of Kon and Keigo's antics, one thing that the series never really indulges in is stereotypically anime-esque 'oh no! I saw her underwear!' nosebleed-related comedy. I'm guessing you've already imagined every possible story that could start with a hot spring suddenly being excavated out back of the Urahara store....

I really want to write something mature and considered about the amazingly skillful way Kubo manages to imply relationship-based heat, angst and emotional turmoil among his cast while still working within the narrow confines of a high-rated fighting shonen manga, because Seth wrote a brilliant Rukia-centric post in the other thread recently that made me ponder what really would have become of the series if it were indeed under the guidance of Chris Claremont or Joss Whedon (the Kaien/Rukia/Ichigo emotional interchange is definitely if quietly of the Scott and Jean level of panel-scorching passion)... but I'm not up to it just at the moment. Something else that caused me to consider this element of Bleach was re-reading (of all things) Alan Moore's pitch for his work on Glory and Youngblood from about ten years ago, in which he discusses what he considers to be the appropriate method for handling adult and sexual material in a traditional superhero comic: basically, to avoid references to adult relationships between the characters to such a glaring extent that the audience quickly begins to substitute all sorts of juicy imaginings of their own. I don't necessarily say this is the most appropriate means for understanding the appeal of Bleach's male-female (and indeed same-sex) character interplay, but thinking about Kubo's treatment of his cast in a series that, if it were up to Shonen Jump's editors, would indeed be merely the fanboy-pleasing grunty fightfest that the series' detractors like to imagine, just increases my admiration for his skill at creating convincing and intriguing relationships.

This is one of my messiest posts ever. Thank god it wasn't post #800.

I think I'd been fine with the filler - it had enough to keep me entertained, despite the odd duffer - up until that episode. But now I realise it's all been downhill since Kira was taken out of the picture (but his arc here was really worth watching, I reckon).

I re-watched the original Soul Society arc recently, mostly inspired by playing "Bleach: The Blade of Fate" on DS (which I have to say is really good. I'm not one to go out and buy up licensed tat, but it's developed by Treasure of such cult gaming fame as Gunstar Heroes, Ikaruga, Astro Boy etc etc and thus has very solid gaming mechanics, interesting for a fight game, with the addition of Bleach characters, and retells this story pretty well in a simple fighting game way, from multiple angles. Anyway) and was struck by just how much the characters have grown over time. How at the time I'd get frustrated with people, and sometimes it felt like pulling teeth - but now with hindsight to how character's develop and a greater insight to the character mechanics I can see that they were in place all along. Everyone has their own quirks and behavioural patterns.

And that's pretty impressive.

Also playing Bleach computer games has reminded me that I really think there should be a Bleach RPG because it seems like that would fit perfectly. With the length of the battles, questing and so forth, unearthing secrets and teh truth.. I'm surprised there hasn't been a genuine attempt at it. Maybe at the end, eh?

The only other thing I have to say is - I miss Ichigo's dad! I have to say I still think my favourite episodes in all of Bleach were when - in the canon material - they've just returned from saving Rukia and everyone is dealing with different things, we first encounter Grimmjow, see Ichigo's dad as Shinigami etc etc - up until the point of Inoue's kidnapping. Just a personal thing perhaps, but I felt like things were really moving along during those episodes.

I miss Ichigo's dad!

Me, too... *sniff*

Truthfully, as much fun as the Hueco Mundo arc has been, I find myself really pining away for all of the characters that we're not seeing. It seemed like we were just getting to know all of the Soul Society characters at the end of that arc and, with the exception of the handful that came to Karakura Town in the introductory Arrancar arc, we still don't know any more about these guys than we did then.

I wanted to see more of the interactions between the Captains and their Vice-Captains, especially after the revelation of Aizen, Tousen and Gin's treason. I'm very interested in the daily workings of Soul Society, how it functions and what roles the Soul Society characters play. I would have loved a short "slice-of-life" arc to show how everyone settled in post-Aizen, although I imagine I'm in the minority there. I love the epic battles and grand, overarching plotlines as much as the next guy, but it's the more subtle character interactions that keep me coming back. With our heroes mostly split up in Hueco Mundo, all the Karakura and Soul Society characters nowhere to be seen and the Arrancar still mostly a mystery, I've been missing that aspect of the show quite a lot.

I suppose that's why I dug the Soul Society filler so much. Well, before it turned godawful. I was really drunk when I watched the last two episodes, and I think that's going to have to be standard procedure until the adaptations start back up.
