It would be great if for once, and in keeping with established continuity, Ichigo's dreary victory over Amagai was immediately followed by his being captured by Yamamoto as a dangerous Hollow and summarily executed. BAD END. Reset for Hueco Mundo goodness!

189: Filler is dead, y'all. ObviousVillainAllAlong Captain commits fiery seppuku, Annoying Wee Lass is saved, Yamamoto is FULL OF PAIN. Next episode returns to Hueco Mundo, Grimmjow Jaegerjaques and Nnoitra.

Neither Nel nor Orihime seem as familiar as they should, though. Have their voices changed?

Nah, on a relisten they're probably the same actors, it's might just be the weird meta context of Shinigami Cup Golden making them burst out of character.

I would hope so. No way am I prepared to accept anyone but Yuki Matsuoka as Orihime.

God, I just realised (slowking.jpg) the reason Nel and Orihime's scenes together feel so familiar - it's Osaka and Chiyo-chan redux.

There's also this one with the new closing theme attached. It's the best closer they've had in a long time, and it's lovely to see the Vaizard getting a look in too.

Oooh. Sexy opening is sexy; fabulous ending is fabulous (with the exception of the closing shot of Ichigo looking like he's been lightly concussed). If only Aqua Timez could rock for more than 90 seconds at a time they would be my favourite band.

Before we bid farewell to Princess Thing and Captain Tuning Fork forever, here (behind a cut for space) is a picture I made to remind us just how enthralling Bleach filler can be:

Tessai looks totally Village People in the context of the new closer.

That shot of Isshin and Urahara is FULL OF WIN ON A COSMIC SCALE.

Let's celebrate by posting something I'm fairly sure we haven't seen in this thread before - the official Bleach Gotei 13 (pre-I WILL STAND IN HEAVEN *CRUNCH*) captains' stats. It's just like Transformers!

In b4 no fucking way does Kenpachi finish last.

Wow. That was a lot of recap.

Seth
10:28 / 16.10.08
Yeah, a lot of recap. I guess it's good for fairweather fans like me who forgot where the story stopped.

Heh.

So, Seele/Transfer: are you generally pleased with how they have restored the original ending to the Grimmjow battle? I had an inkling that they'd do something like this, scrapping the shoehorned "ending" and making it faithful again.

Seth
09:31 / 22.10.08
Padding, padding, padding.

Recap = bad

Bonus Pesche and Dondo Chakka dicking about = good

They really need to learn the lesson. What we want from Bleach filler is more idiotic comedy. Those sections of the Szayel fight have already been recapped in the anime ad nauseum. Did they read the forty two issues of the manga that this fight spans and think that nearly a year wasn't long enough?

I suppose they think it's excusable because it's been six months since they cut away from the canon story, but...

In b4 no fucking way does Kenpachi finish last.

Kenpachi's advantages aren't likely to show up on Top Trumps. He's always struck me as like Clint Eastwood at the end of Unforgiven, if Eastwood were able to take a bullet from every barrel in the room and still walk out of there.

are you generally pleased with how they have restored the original ending to the Grimmjow battle?

Yes - it really was the best and only way Ichigo could have brought that fight to an end (Nnoitra's little intervention aside) and it's one of my favourite character moments in the series to date. I'm sorry it's the last we'll really see of Grimmjow for probably at least a year.

As for the megas recap, it would bother me less if it weren't so ponderous and didn't leave important stuff out in preference to showing vast empty chunks of battles and scenes we know from top to bottom. If it really were intended to bring up to speed viewers who haven't seen the show in twelve months or so, we'd get to see precis of Nel's introduction, the Privaron Espada, Aizen's warning not to engage the intruders, Szayel's scheming, Rukia vs. Kaien/Aaroneiro, Chad's level up, Loly and Menoly putting the hurt on Inoue... all material that needs to be covered to understand just where we are now.

On the positive side - I'm really enjoying the performance of the voice actor playing Nnoitra. He captures that guttersnipe yakuza sneer of his perfectly, really gives the impression of someone who doesn't give a fuck about how he fights. Which is why Ichigo is in so much trouble at this stage - Grimmjow hated his guts and was therefore someone who cared very deeply about besting his opponent in a way that salvaged his pride, meaning that Ichigo was able to engage him emotionally; Nnoitra doesn't care about anyone. I'm really looking forward to his backstory, considering that unlike the Szayel material, it should survive adaptation largely intact.

Has anyone else noticed that Bleach = 24? Now that we're back to adapting the canon material it seems clear that practically the entire story since entering Las Noches has taken place in real time.

Seth

Perhaps that should be Bleach = 12 padded out to make 18 + 6 from last week.

Today's episode also featured the first instance in which the casting felt jarring... to hear the adult Nel speaking with Tomoko Kaneda's voice was freakywrong.

However, I am glad Kaneda is still in the series because she's fucking amazing. For proof:

Here's her singing in character as Nel.

Wearing a rubber ring and a raincoat.

Frighteningly, she's five years older than I am...

...and her voice is capable of producing sounds at a frequency beyond that of human hearing.

Seth
17:02 / 29.10.08
More of Tomoko Kaneda singing as Nel.

Mysterious Transfer Student
18:16 / 29.10.08
Eeeee. That... singing (hides under table)

It's hard when faced with voice actors like Kaneda to know whether to feel awe or pity at the phenomenon that gifts/afflicts her, known in the subculture as anime-goe (anime voice); barring a sudden 30-a-day cigarette diet, she's probably still going to sound like that when she's seventy. As for Adult!Nel, that voice coming out of someone so... uh... deep-chested definitely sounds off - they'll have to ask her to tone it down for the upcoming flashback scenes. I have heard her play non-infantile characters on occasion, so hopefully she'll find the right pitch.

We also learn that Kaneda's profile on her blog (no self-respecting seiyu is without one) reads:-

Hobby: Eating potatoes while walking
Special Skills: A bird's beak
Self-intro: Even if I inhaled helium, my voice wouldn't change that much

Björk, eat your damn heart out.

Anyhow, this week's episode was pretty good even if the advent of Neliel Tu Oderschvank (love the meal Nnoitra's VA made of that) felt a little overstretched. The reveal shot of Neliel's number, Ichigo getting huggled to death and Inoue getting tongue-tied over what honorific to address Nel with were as much fun as they were in the comic. I'm looking forward to the focus switching back to Szayel and co. next week to see just how the weirder elements of that fight start to get adapted to TV.

ORA ORA ORA ORAAAA!!
22:20 / 02.11.08
Does anyone know what's going on with the last chain on Zangetsu (bankai form) being a broken link? Unless it's just shoddy animation all the time... It reminds me fairly strongly of some other important Ichigo-centric broken chains, but it's probably not related at all.

Seth
08:48 / 05.11.08
While I don't know the answer to that, there is a visual link to Ichigo's very first fight with Renji in Karakura Town when he's fighting with the as yet unnamed and unreleased Zangetsu. He taps into his own Shinigami powers (rather than those borrowed from Rukia) and at the climactic moment of 'charging up' the end of the pommel decoration is blown off from excess energy. It's in exactly the same place as the broken chain link when Zangetsu is released during bankai.

193 - Ways to tone down the violence in adaptation: Ishida vomits a colourless liquid rather than the bloody contents of his stomach. Still, I'm pleased they chose to keep the vile working methods of Szayel's sympathetic magic, because a stomach getting pulped is still a stomach getting pulped regardless of how you depict it.

These chapters are tough to watch in adaptation. It's primarily because of the series' need to bulk out the fights in order to not catch up so quickly, but the insanely long Szayel fight from the comic now seems to be lasting for an eternity. Even in the manga this section was particularly gruelling. It's essentially week after week of seeing your favourite characters tortured and humiliated for the entertainment of two hideous freaks.

I seriously hope there'll be 2nd showdown between Uryu and Mayuri, and that Uryu exceeds his previus pwning of that hideous wretch.

Seth
14:53 / 07.11.08
I know that I'm supposed to despise Mayuri, but I really rather like him... as a character that is. It's probably Ian Beale Syndrome again. If they're well portrayed I still tend to enjoy them as a character despite understanding that they're an evil bastard. See Aizen and Gin for further examples.

However, your post makes me wonder exactly what Ishida's character arc might be. In many ways he's the most tragic of the Nakamakura; a product of a cruel and distant father (Bleach's take on Gendo Ikari); unable to defeat the foe who tortured and experimented on his people; later rescued in a humiliating manner by that same foe; user of abilities that cannot be allowed to exist in the long run because they destabilise the entire multiverse; and he's no longer even allowed the title of Last Quincy.

Just where is Ishida likely to fit in as the story progresses? Where is he likely to end up?

11:41 / 12.11.08
194: I'm gratified that the sheer nastiness of the current story has so far made it to the screen largely unmodified (besides skimping on Ichigo's shattered arm and Ishida vomiting clear fluid). It's unsettling: during Szayel's sympathetic magic torture there wasn't much onscreen blood in the comic either, but the knowledge of what Espada #8 is doing to them internally is far more horrific than a mere gore display. Nel's betrayal at the hands of Nnoitra and Szayel also worked really well. Seeing that long, long drop from the walls of Las Noches and the halo of blood around baby Nel's head actually made it nastier than the manga.

This is the first time since we came back from filler that the adaptation has really been hitting it for me. Kaneda made a good job of Neliel's dialogues with Nnoitra in the flashback, and the scene where Pesshe and Dondochakka pledge to protect her was terrific. The fact that Takehito Koyasu played both Pesshe's dramatic speech and his usual idiotic ramblings so well shows yet again what a difference good voice acting makes. (I'm wondering if we'll ever see what P&D were like prior to having their masks torn off, but it's not important.) Nnoitra's still my favourite villain in this arc, even ahead of Aaroniero or Szayel, simply because he's such a self-deluding punk - completely unable to achieve anything by himself, yet he still cherishes the dream of being the strongest and crushing everyone who looks down on him. Definitely the lowest and nastiest of Bleach's exemplary roster of wannabe Übermenschen.

I just started watching Bleach fairly recently and I had to avoid the rest of this thread for fear of spoilers. Is there a link where I can go to catch up on episodes that aren't on DVD yet?

Fuckin' ace. #195 is the best the adaptation has been since the first half of the Grimmjow fight. And it has the best filler comedy insert, which played brilliantly with how we thought this part of the story might have a lot removed in the editing room. The level of despair was pitched exactly right, it was as hard to watch as it should have been, and that moment we've all been waiting for was every bit as CHEER AT THE SCREEN-TASTIC as we hoped it would be. That was fuckin' great.

I am incredibly excited about the upcoming episodes, and I already know what's going to happen!

I am somewhat less excited about next season, which may very well be another full filler arc. Without going into spoileriffic details, it certainly seems like they're going to have to put TBTP into this season in order to pad it out to ~23 episodes. If that's the case, the manga will only be about 40 issues ahead by then, which is certainly not enough for another full season. We should enjoy the good stuff while it lasts...
