Seriously, where actually is forum number three, amoury jokes aside? Or is it that there really truly is an amoury and I am just not cool enough to know?

I think it used to be the 9/11 forum, didn't it?

This Sunday

There was a '9/11' forum?

Y'know, I've been watching this board since, well, right before it stopped being 'Nexus' and I never missed any forum.

I do remember that armory joke showing up before, though.

The 9/11 forum was a temporary forum introduced shortly after, well, 9/11, for discussion of same. It was real and I didn't dream it.

Not doubting the existence, much. I would've probably ignored it, when it was around, and so, apparently did.

What was it before then? Or was there a number-shifting I'm not thinking of, shortly before then?

If it was the '9/11' forum since the beginning, that's a little bit creepy.

Also, just wondering, does anyone know how people are chosen to not be allowed to register to the board? Other than it being a spam or marketing thing? Just curious.

There was a 9/11 forum briefly, but before that there was also a separate "Help" forum, where you didn't have to be a member to post. Quite often the problems people needed help with had nothing to do with the board. And quite often, it became totally impossible to tell who was asking what and who was answering (names kept changing).

For some reason, I thought Help was #13, but it may have been #3.

There was, to memory, a Help Forum. I'd forgotten about that.

Was the 9/11 forum still around when the current iteration of Barbelith was immanentized? Time flies oddly here in the soft places, I find it difficult to keep things in mind beyond 'today, yesterday, some time back'. I'm fairly sure the help forum that you didn't need to log in for didn't survive past the days Barbelith was made of string and off-the-shelf forum software, similarly the Supercontext.

9/11 and Help were red-and-grey-Lith. They didn't make it to yellow-and-grey.

The Help forum that grant's talking about didn't even make it to red & grey, as far as I remember - Flowers is right on that one. It was on the really basic UBB Barbelith, the one immediately following the death of the Nexus that looked like every other UBB site at the time, and Help was a forum that you could sign into as a guest poster, rather than a member. It ended up changing from 'Help' to 'Jack Fear Explains Everything' (or similar) and others on a monthly basis before red & grey came in and guest posting was removed.

Nah, it was there when I joined, which was red-and-grey.

Hang on, red and grey was UBB... I remember because it still had the suit-asplode glitch that created so much paranoia...

Yeah, I think you joined around the same time as me, didn't you? Red and grey, UBB, I seem to remember.

I joined just before 9/11, and the 9/11 forum lasted for a couple of months after.

Elijah wrote this; I am annoyed that moderators don't have the ability to put someone in timeout. A generic PHPBB board has that, and it flags the post with "USER WAS SUSPENDED UNTIL XXXX FOR THIS POST"

And I'm wondering why moderators don't have this ability and if its possible for them to aquire it?

The only two reasons I can think of that you wouldn't have it is
a) technically not possible on this board
b) in case the mods go all ego-splodey and took advantage... which I somehow can't see happening.
or, I guess b.1)because Barbelithers (as a whole?) would prefer to spnd 5 pages in policy dealing with someone in public than just force them into taking a timeout.

If theres a better place for this question, sorry, I couldn't see one.

Basically: Barbelith runs on unique homegrown software which for various reasons too painful to relate is currently as good as it's ever going to get. X-ref the various discussions we've had on the topic over the years, most recently kicking off again round about here. Tom asplains the current state of play here.

Not exactly a new member, and maybe not that basic a question, but what's up with the Webzine? Meaning, why was it discontinued (or was it not supposed to be a continuous effort?)? And what exactly is its history?

Our Lady Has Left the Building

The webzine didn't last long and soon transformed into a kind of group blog thing. There were around a half dozen Barbeloids that Tom set up with their own blogs and the idea was that they would feed into this one blog, but people had lives to lead and so it didn't last long. The google description for Barbelith is more based on an intention rather than something that actually lasted that long.

Not quote. The webzine and the group blog co-existed, but were never integrated in any meaningful way. Which was a pity. I thought the setup had great potential, repositioning the community as a sort of media node organized around a stream of new content and conversation surrounding it, with the zine as the front page, the blogs as as sort of opinion columns, and the board as the place for the conversation to continue.

Seriously, I think it was the lack of proper and consistent cross-linking that doomed the project, as much as anything else.

And so, it's dead entirely? Or does it cross people's minds now that there's occasional talk of renewal of well, the community?

Also: QueerGranny? What happened to?

Queer Granny was Persephone's baby. She's not really around here any more.

Oh, okay. I remember Kegboy comics and Fool designs, hence the assumption.

I'll take the silence as a "yes, the zine is buried deep".

And thank you!

How does one see your own profile (i.e. topics posted, number of posts etc?). I always go to my admin screen, or a sign-in screen if logged out.

How does one see your own profile (i.e. topics posted, number of posts etc?).

I think the only way to do that is to log out.

You can see the topic/post numbers by clicking on the "#n members" link on the top of the main page, then looking for your username.

All of a sudden, I had an image of us all standing backstage, wearing elaborate feathered masks and facial prosthetics, asking each other to help adjust our makeup.

I don't think you need to log out. Didn't this come up before? Click on your username from any post or thread, when it asks you to update your info, click "update" and it brings you to a screen showing no. of posts/threads and so on.

Though wearing elaborate feathered masks sounds more fun.
