It's a personal call. For myself, I try to gauge whether reviving an old thread will be of benefit to the board as a whole, or just to me.
In other words, if my response to the dormant thread is essentially reactive—that is, if I'm riffing on/analyzing what's already been seen in-thread, or requesting more information on the topic, or simply trying to make myself look clever—then I'd have a hard time justifying dredging up that particular shipwreck.
On the other hand, if there's been a new development related to the subject, or if I have a question or perspective that could potentially move the topic in anew direction, or broaden it, or give people a window for re-engaging with it...
...or if it's the sort of thread that seeks to build an archive, either by
-inviting personal narratives (e.g., "Your Life In Ten Songs")
-soliciting additions to a canon (e.g., "The Lamest Superhero Costumes")
...or one that serves a function, where starting a new thread would be a duplication of effort (e.g., "Identify That Tune")...
...then I have no compunctions about clamping on the electrodes and bringing Boris Karloff back for one more round. |
