How many pm's does the inbox hold?

I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't see the answer...

Thanking you in advance.

Loads, is probably the most accurate answer. I never get round to clearing mine out and there are thousands in there.

(OK, most of them just say "Stoatie you WANKER!!!"- thanks, Mum- but it's nice to be noticed).

As far as I know, there is no limit. It just takes longer and longer to load the page.

Thank you, I will remember to empty them out now and again then.

Is there anything stopping people from simply copying other people's ficsuit names 2 months down the line after a namechange?

Not really, no. We've had fakes in the past, including a rather unsettling incident where someone masqueraded as a regular and tried to set up a pub meet. Not sure you can have two people with the exact same name simultaneously but you can certainly have a close copy. What you can't change, of course, is your member number.

Roughly. The same suit name cannot be used twice. However, one can use minor variations in punctuation or spelling. There have been a number of cases of people adopting other people's names, either in jest or with fraudulent intent.

Spatula Clarke

That's not the case any longer, Haus. I've swapped backwards and forwards on a number of occasions, always coming back to this name in the end with the exact same spelling and punctuation.

I'll swap back to an old one for a month to double check.

Now, the next step would be for me to change my name to E. Randy Dupre, or to attempt to, but if it works it might be really confusing for 28 days...

Go for it if you want - the prev will still be visible. I'd imagine the board will allow you to - it was the pre-Cal software that prevented you using a display name that had already been registered once. I remember being pissed at the time because I had to use E Randy Dupre without the punctuation, until that login self-destructed.

Or try changing it to Spatula Clarke - that'd test everything out at once.

I'm not really a new member, per se... but I do have a question.

Do we have a convo thread for announcing amazing things that happen in our life and that we need to share to have somebody give congrats?

Gives Me A Happy would be the place for it, most likely.

Congratulations for whatever, BTW.

Is there a particular reason as to why whenever I post to any thread on the board, I get a snarky response goading me?

How does one do that spiffing "spoiler tag" thingy I saw Zippy/Id doing here. Hmmm?

That's from somewhere around here.

The simplest explanation (and an example that can just be cut/pasted with a few adjustments directly into one's post) for the spoiler tag trickery is in the FAQ with the rest of the HTML-type things. I had the idea it was going to be more complicated than it was, based on the thread linked directly above, but it turns out to be pretty simple to use.

I could take a look at your question, Mathlete, but I don't know if you'd get a lot out of it, nor in the light of the topic summary do I know if it would be possible to cover every base satisfactorily.

Nobody likes you.

Nobody.

Even the granny I was sat next to on the bus home this evening said she thinks you're a pranny.

Either that or it might be paranoia. Or a self-fulfilling prophesy.

How do you view your own profile? If I click on Matheletes name I can see that he has posted 613 times and so forth, but when I click on my own name I go to a different screen which allows me to change password, email etc.

Is there any way of find out one's own profile (number of posts, registration date etc.) without asking a third party member?

Update your profile and you'll go to another screen that has some more information, including your post count.

Also, if you click on "members" on the front page you'll get lots of options

When did Goodness Gracious Meme lock hirself out? I don't remember this. And why? Anybody know?

Is Xoc still around?

I know 'nesh is gone, unfortunately, I miss him to this day.

GGM, locked hirslf out ages ago, mainly (to the best of my knowledge) because ze wasn't happy with what ze perceived as Barbelith's tolerance of hatespeech.

Mathelete: OK. First up, I think one problem here is that your barometer might be out of whack on what constitutes snark or goading. I think it might be quite hard to respond to you _without_ that response being interpreted as snark or goading on certain topics or in the case of certain people.

More generally, however, I think it can be said that often your contributions are reacted to with some species of irritation, and I think that this irritation may be something that needs to be allowed to dissolve over time.

As a parallel, take a look for a moment at Paranoidwriter - because the Policy is a serious section of the site, posts to it are generally taken seriously, rather than mocked or ignored. As a result, perhaps for the first time, PW found himself being taken seriously. This is a powerful drug, and it led to, essentially, camping. In the end, so much attention wasbeing directed to sorting out PW's incorrent or just incomprehensible assertions that patience was lost. I think there's a miniature version of that going on here.

So, were I to offer avuncular advice on this one, it would be to stay out of Policy and Help. Consider your record: no intervention of yours in Policy has ever been successful. The Juggernaut thread was not unlocked. Shadowsax was banned. Claris Dancers was also banned. Your attempts to bring clarity to the timeline and processes of Barbelith, passim, have required lengthy correction and explanation. Your intercession in your own banning thread planted for the first time in the ongoing discussion the idea that, actually, maybe banning you was not such an unlikely thought. This is not a happy hunting ground for you, and it seems profoundly unlikely that this will change. Your contributions help neither Barbelith nor you, and if you can stay out of Policy, I suggest you do so. If you cannot, I suggest that you ask yourself why you cannot.

That plus, as suggested in your banning thread, no descriptions of physically brutalised women would, I think, go a long way to helping out on the shortness you may be finding yourself on the receiving end of. If you feel that you are actually being harrassed, that's a different matter. However, there is no rule against people not liking other people on Barbelith, which will inevitably colour relations between them, as long as that dislike does not lead to actions that are unacceptable.

Just my 2d.

I would like to point out I never argued that Claris Dancer shouldn't be banned, I asked what would happen if he wasn't.

I would also argue that I don't spend that much time in Policy, no more than I would in any other forum, I tend to spend time in threads I invest time in, for example the Cormac McCarthy thread, or old BB threads, etc.

I would also argue that members of this board who do have a problem with me rarely if ever attempt to engage me in the subject at hand, but use the subject to take a little pot shot at me. I don't view myself as a troll, in the same way I don't think I'm a misogynist. The people who do don't seem to be able to provide any evidence of it. When I have ever said anything that has been called up I have been willing to examine it, and I've also apologised on these occasions. Past doing this, I can't see what else I can do. I'm unwilling to leave Barbelith, I like being here, and I like being able to reply.

I will, as I have before, leave any Policy threads that aren't A) about me or something I was involved in, or B) about bannings and such. Anything else I view as fair game. I would also like to ask people who do have a problem with something I have said to continue to respond to me, to allow me to examine my words.

This thread in the Policy is neither (a) nor (b). However, I have given you the advice on how to annoy people less. It is not within my power to make you take it.

You know what? This is a thread for new members to ask basic questions about Barbelith. Not what you're doing.

The responses you receive are generated by the posts you contribute. It's as simple as that and needs no further explanation. If you want more, new thread.

Mathlete asked a question, and he also answered one.
Is it his tenure that means he is disqualified? Or is it because you feel the question was not about the language, mechanics and etiquette of Barbelith?
